    The ambulance wasn't asking Ruby for her next of kin, it was trying to find her next of kin in it's database, and because it couldn't, it kept repeating the words over and again. When it was talking to Vater earlier, the machine listed his next of kin... didn't ask him for their names. Ruby was upset because she was "dying" and even then the universe wasn't even going to tell her what she most wants to know.

    • @daviddavis7754
      @daviddavis7754 4 месяца назад +30

      I also found it curious that the ambulance listed Ruby's 'calendar' age as over 3000 years. Now that may refer to counting from her origin to however far in the future this episode is, but that's a really odd bit of data to show up like that or a strange biometric to focus on. Why slip that in like that? Curious ...

      @@daviddavis7754 they did the same thing with Amy pond in The Beast Below though. I mean I definitely think that Ruby is not who she seems and it’s absolutely possible she’s that old because I am not entirely sure she’s from this universe but it’s also not unheard of for future technology to know someone’s true age and when they were actually born. What I find more weird is that it couldn’t figure out a next of kin. Because next of kin should be Carla, but if they are looking for genetic next of kin and they can’t find them, where did Ruby come from then? It could’ve just been that we don’t know her family and it was for emotional purposes but I definitely think her origins are not what they seem. I think there’s something to that.

    • @TheBorzoi
      @TheBorzoi 4 месяца назад +20

      @@Happymama12 Carla would be long dead at this point so she wouldn't be the next of kin from the perspective of non-time travellers due to not being alive. This feels like a Moffetism that's in most of his works, that someone who has 'died' is off-screen speaking and their status as alive or dead is confusing to the characters. The Empty Child does it, Silence in the Library, Angel Bob of the Crash of the Byzantium, Clara in the Asylum of the Daleks, to an extent the clockwork men of The Girl in the Fireplace as well as the detective in Blink. Perhaps there's even a stretch with the recordings of the citizens who choose to forget in The Beast Below as having their memories erased makes that version of the person 'dead'. Oh and how do I forget how Heaven Sent is literally this trope without the Doctor even realizing it.

    To me the “who’s my next of kin” line was in reference to her realizing that if she died in the future on some far off planet, Carla and all her other loved ones will never know what happened to her. They will be deprived of the closure and grief that the next of kin need to heal.

    Most people nowadays will probably think that the Skye Boat Song's inclusion was a nod to Outlander just like back in 2022 when The Master Played it on the Second Doctor's recorder in Power of the Doctor.
    As a nerd who has watched all of classic who as well, the story of it in Doctor Who is longer than that. In 1968, the 2nd doctor played it on his recorder in episode 6 of The Web of Fear sitting next to his companion Jamie McCrimmon who he met after landing the Tardis right after the battle of Culloden. The lyrics to the song is about Bonnie Prince Charlie's escape after said battle.
    But yes, it's also the theme song for Outlander based on Diana Gabaldon's book-series with the same name. The author got inspiration from Doctor Who which is why for example Jamie Fraser has the same name as 2nd Doctor companion Jamie McCrimmon. So it's a big entanglement going on with that piece of music.

    Depending on what the outcome of Rubys arc is, it's possible Ruby unlocks memories (through a hidden song) that cause her to become a villain, likely unwillingly and the The Doctor will be forced to pursue her to either stop her or save her.
    If she is a villain (The Tricksters daughter for example, or another member of The Pantheon) it would make sense The Doctor would try to redeem her in some way, and possibly forced to seal her away

    This episode is the case for why we need more guest writers in Doctor Who. In the RTD and Moff eras, the showrunner would only write about 40% of the episodes, and the rest would be written by guest writers. That allowed new writers to flourish, and bring new types of storytelling to the series. For the new season, RTD has written 80% of the episodes and it's very telling.

    Something the Doctor said in the episode makes me wonder in what order we're seeing these stories. He comments to Ruby about this being her first alien planet to see the skies of. Umm...if this takes place in linear time after the Devil's Chord, then what were the Doctor and Ruby up to in the six months in-between Space Babies and Devil's Chord? Only space station/spaceship based stories? Were they only on Earth visiting different time periods?
    Questions. I have them.

    I am honestly wondering if "who is my next of kin" may have been used as a statement. There was a very nasty robot that acted a lot like the Villengard ambulance way back in the 1960s called WOTAN. It was the first (and I believe only) character in the show's history to refer to The Doctor, specifically, as "Doctor Who".
    This is a total stretch, and I know it, but on the off chance that I might be right, I want it noted somewhere public. If the Ambulance is related to WOTAN, and "who is my kin" is a statement, then Ruby could be Susan, or Susan's daughter.
    That's at least a theory bouncing around my head.

    I also loved this darker episode from Ncuti, especially him being sad about Ruby dying. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad the doctor went to therapy but I also enjoy him being a tortured soul with trauma and for the past two episodes I felt Ncuti was just a bit TOO chill and happy-go-lucky, yknow? I think this episode while great explains why I, like others hasnt gotten the Ruby IS the companion moment. Not because she hasn't had her moments. She has already had those moments where she will throw her safety to the wind to save someone, more than once. Millie more than any episode, has been acting the hell out of the role.
    The Doctor's words when faced with the possibility of Ruby's death, after it's been established that they've barely had many adventures together (Oh right, this is the first alien planet you've visited.). The whole "you're the only person I can talk to." thing. Not, I promised I'd keep you safe, which would be more fitting considering they have barely gotten to know each other. What we have been missing is the filler, getting to know you conversations. It's been either the Doctor explaining something or solving the problem.
    I'll attribute this to the smaller episode count.

    1) They found a way to add a musical moment again. Music really is a clue to the overall story. 2) There would have been more tension if Ruby was in trouble rather than the doctor, and even the death scene had no real tension. It would have worked better if it were a later episode. 3) To me, the Doctor was too emotional here. I'm not speaking against the actor, the writing. 4) The sonic would have been useful here. I was hoping when the doctor was feeling his pockets at the end it was because he was looking for the sonic. 5) The Ambulances made me think of discount Daleks. 6) Totally agree about the unrequited love thing. It wasn't needed, unless it matters if the actress continues as the same character. We do not know if she will return as the same character. 7) Why would the container of the body be sticky? It makes sense that the outside is a dry glass cylinder. 8) I'm looking forward to knowing why there was a record of Ruby. When did they start categorizing people? Also the snowflakes. The Doctor now knows for sure that it is related to Ruby. Let's hope we get some answers next week. ✌

      My theory on the whole lack of sonic thing was that:
      1. The doctor was in a rush to help the person yelling for help and he simply forgot it.
      2. Even if he remembered to bring it, he couldn't move his arm to retrieve it since the movement would have set the mine off too quickly.
      3. If he forgot and Ruby went back and got it, Ruby wouldn't know how the sonic worked and so wouldn't risk accidentally setting the mine off with the wrong function.

    I'm surprised she didn't mention the 'fish finger' in the room Matt Smith was easily my favourite doctor and having Moffitt back not only writing the episode but directing it you can really feel the 11th doctors energy in this episode. This doctor as well seems to be the antithesis of the 11th in the sense that every episode so far they seem to have been going down some sort of memory lane ? The space station was very similar to "the end of the world" ep. The second episode not only was he in the same place as the 1st doctor but he mentioned that and Susan to ruby. And this one with the troops relating him to his wife and all the references to parenthood I've got an out there theory. Ruby is related to the doctor. She could be the daughter of the doctors daughter from David Tennants era. The way time seems to stop around ruby and the snow stuff parenthood is a big thing it seems this season plus the old woman at the end of ruby's first episode could either be older ruby or the regenerated version of the doctors daughter keeping an eye on her.... Sorry I rambled 😅 if anyone's read to the bottom of this I do apologise.

    This episode was released on my dad's birthday. I basically called my dad to congratulate him, we had a nice, warm talk. And then I sit down and watch the episode about dad's love being the strongest entity. Given that my dad is the one, who showed my first Doctor Who (Season 4 of NewWho), yeah, I cried...

      Series* 4, and the rest of that parenthetical is tautological.
