@@brewingbooks dude, I started a book collection a few years ago. I knew too little when I started, and bought a lot of crap. Now I know what a good book collection is, and I'm in awe of yours. I just bought the Dune deluxe edition with the teal blue and sandy orange cover, and I'm thrilled with it. I don't have enough money to get a Tolkien collection like yours, but there's always time. One book at a time
I noticed some of the hardback books of Beowulf and Sigurd and Gudrun are smaller too. Really annoying to find them not lining up with the other standard hardbacks. I managed to get Beowulf though in the right size.
Stunning collection, James. It astonishes me every time you present it to us. I feel like I need to get my hands on the deluxe edition of the fall of numenor soon. The orange just looks too good 🤩
The quality of the deluxe FoN is pretty marginal. Identical page block to the trade edition and a lower-than-LEGO production quality all round. My first one had a split page corner (the paper split into two layers) and the second had a random splat of gold on the front -- but was signed so I kept it. Unlike the other deluxe edition (except Gawain), the covering paper is not textured.
My Tolkien book collection is now proud to say 17 strong , you really motivated me to get the whole collection and the reading has been magical.. I see myself reading the lot many times over before I leave for the havens ........
Amazing collection video! I think I'll be coming back to this one time and time again -- you've got a wonderful set of books here! On 34:34, yup there is a paperback edition of Beowulf that matches the dimensions of the others (I got it the other week)
@Brewing Books a bit late, but this is the one that seems to have the same size as my paperback of The Fall of Arthur, can't say for sure tho, because I do not (yet) own a copie of Tolkien's Beowulf translation. ISBN: 9780007590094
Outstanding James, thank you for taking the time to give us a comprehensive and detailed tour of your Tolkien collection! I commented on a recent video of yours, I had noticed your astronomy section on one of your bookshelves visible in that particular video. I observed in today's video another wonderful book on another topic of interest of yours that you & I share, that being of World War Two and the book by Antony Beevor. I can't recommend that book highly enough!
With the fellowship of the rings book you can take a hair dryer and slowly warm up the stickers glue. There is a chance you might have to clean off glue residue. Ive successively removed some very old stickers. 📖 Happy reading & good luck!
Very impressive! I appreciate your passion and dedication. I've added some of the books to my wish list as I finish the Tolkien books I currently have, I'll grow from there. Thanks for sharing, James!
Great video! Thank you for this. I think it would now replace the previous "My Complete Tolkien Collection" video and become a new reference point for me. (Still that earlier video is great and loved) I was surprised not to hear a note on the additional material in "The Tolkien Treasury" pocket hardback boxed set (by Christina Scull, if I'm not mistaken) which makes the whole set a *must* (a true Treasure, so to say). Didn't know the John D. Rateliff's two books are going to be released in Deluxe format. I am very fond of my hardback copies (one of which is extremely hard to find at an accessible price these days). Also, the hardback (with dust jacket) edition of "Tolkien - Artist and Illustrator" is very rare and, if found, expensive today. I went for no more than a paperback edition. And I am happy about that ;-) Once again thank you for this great video!
Amazing collection! Have you ever seen brazillian covers of silmarillion, lotr trilogy and unfinished tales? I personally think the graphic design made for those covers amazing, its recycled images of previous covers but harper collins used hot stamps and the runes are written in bas-relief. Maybe its because we have cultural differences, here we are not fond of dust jackets on the books.
Thank you James for your highly detailed effort to produce such high quality videos. I really appreciate your videos and it gives me inspiration to expand my Tolkien collection. Cheers💯
Hi james, i remove the front of the celophane with a sharp knife so the book can be taken out, but keep the rest on to save the book from any marks . Just an idea if you're looking to preserve the slip cases, i believe condesation is not a problem as the front rectancle by the spine of the book is removed .
Those deluxe editions are beautiful, but I could bring myself to buy them or ask someone to buy them for me. I'm just pleased to have the standard hardback edition with the beautiful art by Alan Lee. I just started a Tolkien section on my shelves.
Beautiful collection! I think the only two works which I would consider "missing" are John Howe's and Alan Lee's art- resp. sketchbook of LotR resp. The Hobbit resp. "Journey through Middle-earth", David Wenzel's Comic of The Hobbit and Barbara Strachey's "Journeys of Frodo" Also, I envy you for that absolutely stunning Children of Hurin with Christopher's signing! The case is a piece of art already
The LOTR and The Hobbit cover art from the 60s, 70s and 80s was the best! Not to mention the cool cartoon of The Hobbit. Id love to see a book of just art inspired by Tolkien, including book covers and book art. Id actually
Awesome collection! Do you have a copy of 'The Tolkien Reader'? It is a very good collection of some of his short stories, essays, and poetry. I think it is still in print.
Thank you! At the moment I don’t have that book - though it would be nice to have some of Tolkien’s shorter works collected in one volume 🙂 Does the Reader contain Tolkien's Magic Ring, by Peter S. Beagle?
Thanks for the video. It is always interesting to watch a collection grow, I am already looking forwards to the 2024 edition. It has left my wondering if Harper Collins plans to publish what I am going to call 'illustrated slipcase' editions as they have with Unfinished Tales and (the very orange) Silmarillion and the Complete Guide, for the other illustrated books (the Hobbit, the Lord of the Rings, the Fall of Numenor, the Great Tales, the Nature of Middle Earth). Currently it feels like half a series exists, the bane of any collector!
I'm a really bad reader and picking up The Silmarilion in the library when the films came out put me off ever trying to read his works. But back when Rings of Power was being made and the online Tolkien community came together to denounce it and praise the original source material, it inspired me to get some of the books. Thanks to channels like yours I managed to get a handful, including LOTR, The Hobbit, Silmarilion, Children of Hurin and the letters book. I also have the CDs of Andy Serkis reading LOTR. As I said, I'm not a great reader but I will persevere and I love what I've read so far. I'll never have a collection like yours, but thanks to your videos I can at least pick and choose the ones to go for and I think I'll end up getting Tales from the Perious Realm, Beren and Luthien, and the Fall of Numenor. Thanks for giving such great overviews of the books and showing such a love for Tolkien.
Great video! One book I do not know anything about is the "Road goes ever on". Is it possible to do an in depth video about this one as well? Just as suggestion,
Are the newest deluxe editions with Tolkien's art the same height as the previous deluxe edition collection? I like the newest LOTR edition but prefer all the others look the same. I would like it if they are the same height though
Love the standard illustrated hardback editions but not a fan of the deluxe versions. Can't decide between the individual Hitory of Middle Earth books, the 3x volume set or the 3x volume box set? I like the individuals because I think I'm more likely to read them, being smaller, but they'll take a lot of shelf space. The 3x peice box set of the History is nice though as it will sit next to the 3x volume Hammond & Skull Companion & Guide box set. Either way its a future purchase... there's still plenty of other Tolkien editions I'd like first.
The HoME hardback 3-part volumes are incredibly impractical to read. So if you’re looking for a readable set of books that look great as part of your collection you may want to consider the hardback individual editions of the series (with the original dust-jacket reproductions)
So jealous of your book collection, I am very very slowly building my Tolkien collection. Constantly keeping my eyes open for pre loved copies in good condition! Enjoy your reviews! Best wishes from from Ireland!
I would say ‘worth’ is very subjective in this case. If you’re keen and set on collecting Tolkien deluxe editions, look up for ones that were made prior to 2015. There are some great editions out there, and make sure you know exactly what a particular deluxe edition, from a specific year, what it contains in terms of content and print quality.
Hey bro! Do you know whether the 'Sir Gawain and the Green Knight: with Pearl and Sir Orfeo' have ever been published in hardcover (not deluxe!) edition? I only was able to found a paperback edition ((
Hi there! Not as far as I’m aware. Certainly in the last 25 years or so I don’t believe there was ever a Gawain standard hardback, except for the early 2000s John Howe paperback and the newly released deluxe and paperback editions.
@@brewingbooks Ta! Great collection! I noticed you don’t have standard hardback edition of Mr. Bliss and Letters from Father Christmas. Have you excluded them intentionally?
What an awesome collection, James, congratulations! Hey, if it's not too personal a question - I've been wondering for some time since I started watching your videos, what is this accent you speak, I've never heard that before?
I actually own all of the Lord of the Rings Paperpack Single Volume Books. The Two Towers actually was quite abundant from where I am. I must be lucky, though LOTR Books nowdays are very easy to pick up
Holy shit! I am amazed! The deluxe editions look classy and strong, while the illustrated hardbacks look more soulful. I like both, and am currently collecting the latter illustrated series. Am I correct in that the deluxe editions have no artwork in them? I love the power of them.
They do look great 🙂 As for illustrations, some of the deluxe editions especially The Hobbit and LOTR from the 2004 editions have some black and white illustrations by Tolkien.
thanks James, we do not have the book storage space you have, so wouldn't be able to get all the editions you have, so was wondering if i want to get the lord of the rings trilogy, which is the best edition to go for? anyone advise? thankyou.
Any collection, no matter how large or small is beautiful in its own right 🙂 As for the best LOTR edition, I would go with Alan Lee’s illustrated three-volume hardback box set which also includes The Hobbit 👍
I have a copy of the 1999 Fellowship of the Ring without the sticker and the 1999 of the two towers which you have missing. I'd be happy to give them to you so that you can have the complete set 😊
Impressive collection James! Hey I do have an extra paperback copy of Roverandom that you are looking for, I would be happy to send it your way to help add to your collection if you are interested. Keep up the great videos, I always enjoy watching!
Hi, I'm looking to buy the lord of the Rings special 50th anniversary hardback edition to Read for the first time. I'm looking for something premium and cool. Do you think is a good idea or is difficult to read because of the weight?
Hi there! The 50th anniversary edition is a great item. I will confess though, that I find any one-volume edition of LOTR to be a bit challenging to read; that’s why I prefer the three-volume sets for practical purposes 🙂
Hey. The edition at 35:10 is how the story was told originally. Are there any other editions other than this one as I’m looking to get the 2nd edition to read prior to the LOTR trilogy but are not too sure which one to get?
Truly awesome, James! Thank you, as always, for taking the time to share your collection, and in such great detail, as expected, of course. Always love your videos and this is wonderful! I do have a quick question, do the deluxe slipcase quarter bound editions have leather- I’m trying to avoid leather, if possible, when thinking about my collection, and I know that several deluxe editions are. Just didn’t know about the books from 25:16 to 29:00. Thank you in advance for insights!
Such an amazing collection! Yours is what started me on collecting more Tolkien. I have a random question though. My first goal has been the Alan Lee illustrated ones that match the box set near the end of the video. I have 3 books so far, The Fall of Gondolin, Beren and Luthien, and The Fall of Numenor. But Gondolin and B&L are smaller and glossy finish where as Numenor is matte and a standard size hardback. Is there a difference in these releases? Because your Gondolin copy looks matte finish. I hope that makes sense lol great collection again!
Wow thanks so much! As for your query, I had the same issue with The Children of Hurin (which is a gloss dustjacket), while Beren & Luthien and Gondolin are matte. My editions are by Harper Collins (so is Fall of Numenor, which is matte also). Could it be you have the Houghton Mifflin editions of Hurin, Beren & Luthien and Gondolin?
@@brewingbooksahhh yep. That appears to be the case. Didn’t even realize, I just saw that artwork and Alan Lee and hit buy haha thank you! Now I know moving forward.
What a beautiful collection! 😍 Thanks so much for this wonderful update! Are you not tempted by the deluxe editions of The History of Middle-earth? And I notice you don't have in non- English editions or materials?
Thank you 🙂 The HoME deluxe editions intrigue me but I’d rather find other books for the time being. As for non-English books, I’m considering the different language publications of The Hobbit. 🙂
Great collection! I was wondering if your history of middle earth paperback editions have glued or sewn bindings. I’m trying to decide between getting the 12/13 volume paperbacks or just to pick and choose a few volumes from the 12/13 volume hardcover collection, as they are more expensive. Thanks
Beautiful Collection James. However you have just the one book by John Garth. Why do you not have the other book which I consider excellent called "The Worlds of J.R.R. Tolkien The Places That Inspired Middle - Earth" first published 2020?
@@brewingbooks oh sweet i will check that out! do you also have a your favorites video? I just picked up a bunch of the Alan Lee stuff and the the Silmarillion by Ted Nasmith, Super stoked to start them out! I look forward to learning from you on what to read, it gets intimidating with how many books and editions there are hahahah! I just say like a 12 pack set at barnes and nobles that had so many different books, i think it was the history off them
Amazing collection, thank you for sharing! I read Tolkien's work translated long ago and am looking to read the classics again in their original language (LOTR / The Hobbit / Silmarillion) in a nice edition to collect + read. After watching your videos I settled on the Standard edition (2022) for the Silmarillion. However, I am debating between the LOTR + Hobbit box set illustrated by Alan Lee or the 75th anniversary Hobbit + the 2021 Standard set LOTR which you all gave fantastic reviews of. What would be your recommendation? Please note that I also own the Deluxe Slipcase editions of the Silmarillion (2022) & LOTR (2021) but I like them more to consult and collect rather than use for a full read-through.
Have you ever had problems with harper collins illustrated books being different in height, i got some and they are a couple millimeters apart in height
Great collection! I've been following your channel for a couple of months now and have a question: I can't for the life of me wrap my head around your accent. Would you tell me your first language I hope you're not offended but I always try and guess people's mother tongue based on their accent, yet so far I couldn't figure out yours. Sorry for the odd request and thanks for your videos, A fan
@@brewingbooks The Tolkien Quiz book came out in 1981 and another in 2012. The Tolkien bestiarium was by David Day and is an illustrated book where he goes through all the different people and creatures of Middle Earth. Like an encyclopedia. Sorry that I am so late answering
Worth finding if you can. It is the best quality HarperCollins edition by quite some margin. A lot of the recent deluxe editions have been pretty poor quality, but they absolutely nailed it with the SD coH. Even the not-quite so well executed SD S&G is well worth getting if the opportunity arises (and the material interests you). I'd be surprised if we ever see such editions from HarperCollins again - I think Amazon killed the margins on these kinds of books and the RRP would just need to be insane to revisit this kind of offering.
Hullo. I can't find anywhere the paperback edition of the "Lord of the Rings - A Reader's Companion" by Hammond and Schull, just the hardcover one. Does anyone have the ISBN code by any chance? Also, is it the same as "J. R. R. Tolkien Companion's Guide" in two volumes by the same two authors? Thanks.
Hi there! It seems the paperback edition shown in the video might be out of print. But just in case here’s the ISBN: 0007270607. This focuses specifically on LOTR, whilst the other two-volume companion and guide is are reference books; a detailed chronology of Tolkien’s life 🙂
why on earth is Children of Hurin the only one in the whole set with a different material for its dustcover. Shiny as opposed to matte. I think they both look good, but I wish they'd stuck with one or the other. Sitting on my bookshelf, it looks out of place.
That’s exactly how I felt once I realized it wasn’t matching with the others. Unlike the Houghton Mifflin editions, which all three books use a glossy dust jacket, the HarperCollins ones feature a glossy cover for Hurin, and matte covers for the Luthien and Gondolin books. It’s gotten easier to accept them as they are along years though 😅
Luckily I had just seen Fellowship so I knew what was coming; but thankfully I decided to stop a few chapters into The Two Towers as that would have spoiled some major moments from the story 😅
Hey man, I just want to let you know you inspired me to continue expanding my collection a good deal this last month or two. I actually own all of the Lord of the Rings Paperpack Single Volume Books. The Two Towers actually was quite abundant from where I am. I must be lucky, though LOTR Books nowdays are very easy to pick up
That’s good to hear! It seems I wasn’t so lucky 😅
@@brewingbooks Better luck next time. ;)
@@brewingbooks thanks so much James for taking the time to help and answering.
noticed you don't own the clothbound editions which have some unique covers as well, the 2013 4 volume set
Well spotted. They’re editions I’d like to own some day 🙂
I have a copy of the 1999 Fellowship of the Ring without the sticker and the 1999 of the two towers which you have missing. I'd be happy to give them to you so that you can have the complete set 😊
Cheers Robert!
Impressive collection James! Hey I do have an extra paperback copy of Roverandom that you are looking for, I would be happy to send it your way to help add to your collection if you are interested. Keep up the great videos, I always enjoy watching!
Hey Zachary! Thanks so much for the offer. I'll let you know ;)
Do you have hardback Hobbit edition with Jemima Catlin's illustrations ? I didn't see this book in your reviews
I actually don’t have it but have been interested in getting a copy for a long time 😅
Hi, I'm looking to buy the lord of the Rings special 50th anniversary hardback edition to Read for the first time.
That’s indeed a facsimile of the first edition of The Hobbit. As far as I’m aware there are no such similar editions of other books in this line.
@@brewingbooks that’s great, thank you. Just
Man all I have is some Lotr mass market paperbacks lol. I’m jealous b
As long as you enjoy reading the books, that’s all that really matters ultimately 🙂
Thank you very much 🙂 and to answer your query, no those deluxe editions do not feature any leather in them.
I would like to get a copy of that other book by Garth. Hopefully soon 🙂
Awesome List! Do you have a reading list and order for what to read after the hobbit and lord of the rings?
I have a video from a few months back on my preferred Tolkien reading order. You may want to check it out 🙂
@@brewingbooks oh sweet i will check that out! do you also have a your favorites video?
Unfortunately yes 🙁 I believe it’s something tricky to get exactly right between different books.
Great collection!
I've been following your channel for a couple of months now and have a question:
I can't for the life of me wrap my head around your accent. Would you tell me your first language
I hope you're not offended but I always try and guess people's mother tongue based on their accent, yet so far I couldn't figure out yours.
Sorry for the odd request and thanks for your videos,
A fan
Thanks for the kind words 🙂 The accent is Maltese 👍
You should get The Tolkien Bestiarium and the Tolkien quiz book?
I’ve heard of these two. Could you tell me more about them? Thanks! 🙂
@@brewingbooks The Tolkien Quiz book came out in 1981 and another in 2012. The Tolkien bestiarium was by David Day and is an illustrated book where he goes through all the different people and creatures of Middle Earth. Like an encyclopedia. Sorry that I am so late answering
@@brewingbooks It’s a Tolkien Bestiary and you should check out the other books by David Day!
can you link anywhere the 2004 deluxe at 25:00. THank you so much
Can you do a review large print version?
I’m actually interested in getting some Tolkien books in large print. Will certainly do some reviews once I get my hands on them 🙂
Books I missed was Tom Shippey's Road to Middle-earth
That’s a fantastic read imo. Great insight into Middle-earth and easily accessible.
but do you have the world of the ring or tales from middle earth or battle of maldon the homecoming of berenorth?
Maldon yes! But I’m not aware of the books ‘World of the Ring’ and ‘Tales from Middle-earth’ 🤔
Okay thankyou!
that super deluxe children of hurin is my white whale, although I don't think I'll ever get my hands on one ever :(
It is an excellent book.
You can still find copies online (second hand) but perhaps quite pricey 😟
Agreed 👍
It really is 🙂
This focuses specifically on LOTR, whilst the other two-volume companion and guide is are reference books; a detailed chronology of Tolkien’s life 🙂
Please make a 2024 book collection update video!!
Except for a few additions, not much has changed tbh! 😅
the author of the video or the viewer, is there a description of the Peregrin Took house somewhere? I will be grateful for your answer.
In all probability, Pippin lived near Whitwell in Tookland. Other than that, there is no actual description or reference to his house.
@@brewingbooks Got it, thanks again for the answer. And thanks for the video, I’m gradually expanding my collection of Tolkien’s works.
34:44
yeah good luck putting that 'pocket edition' in your pocket lol
I know! 😂
why on earth is Children of Hurin the only one in the whole set with a different material for its dustcover.
So... I want to appropriate your entire collection including shelves... (Kidding of course)
😄
epic
Cheers!
Sorry to hear you spoiled Borimirs death for yourself, funny enough I did something similar to myself 😂
For years I’ve been tracking down 1st /1sts of the 12 book history of middle earth series. I’m happy to say I’m now one book away! (Lost tales part 2) Thank you for helping me justify the recent addition to my collection 😂
😍👌
Cheers Gandalf! 😄
See I used to collect alot. Now I've become more minimilist.. its all OK untill your house burns down 😢
Ouch! Sorry about that mate 😞
@@brewingbooks 🤣 no worries bro keep up good work..
