    One of my biggest pet peeves lately is some esties I know, say that you don’t need a derm for acne, just lifestyle diet and products. It bothers me because acne isn’t that easy. I eat clean and vegan and still had cystic acne. It wasn’t until I had meds from a derm, where it got better.
    I see estheticians like a therapist (you go to them if you’re going to a rough time and need someone to talk to, help with coping skills for issues) and seems as psychiatrist where you need more severe issues.
    Rant over lol

      Sorry girl but clean and vegan do not equate to no acne. If you are nutrient deficient, acne can happen too. Thats why some people who are vegan with acne, once they start eating meat again, it gets reversed... Sticking to a strict diet e.g. macrobiotics for a long time is not necessarily doable in today's world. Humans are omnivores for a reason.

    Also derms deal with a whole host of skin related conditions, I've seen them before for scalp problems and hives, but never for face 😆. Derms may even deal with skin cancer and burns. Both are so different, I'm not sure they even see the other as a rival.

    To me this feels similar to the Radiologist vs Radiologic Technician/Technologists/Radiographer question. Both work in the same field (medical imaging) however one is a medical doctor who can diagnose illness and interpret medical images (i.e xrays) while a technician is a trained paramedic specialising on working various modalities (CT, MRI, Ultrasound etc) to produce said images. Their skills compliment each other so to me there's no question of which one is superior because they are specifically trained to do what they do to provide the best healthcare for patients. Speaking as radiographic technician myself 😊

    Where I’m from an esthe is a beauty therapist that has undergone extra training and need at least 2 years in the industry to qualify. A derma requires a degree in medicine and then 2 years of further training. To me they are worlds apart but I don’t live in the USA so I’m sure it’s different over there 🤷‍♀️

      Definitely agree it is less apparent here, if only because of privatized medicine. I live in Los Angeles where you will easily spend $225+ seeing either a dermatologist or an esthetician. Culturally, both are seen as luxury services and thus their specifics are unfamiliar to the general public.
      We also have a culture where people celebrate their "gurus" and misinformation in such a way that scope of practice goes out the window when many people are making their purchasing decisions. Note I said "purchasing" and not "health" decisions, that is the way we have to approach these things with privatized for-profit health care.

Dermatologists usually see patients to solve a very especific clinic problem and tend to prioritize time and resourses in order to find a diagnosis and correct treatment, we usually have 20 minutes or less for a patient and you need to use that time to explain correctly ONE or maximun TWO clinical problems , so it's not the best enviroment for esthetics problems, that's why esthes are so necesary for taking care of skin issues in a very holistic way, thanks so much for your videos!! i love the way you educate people AND professionals including dermatologist!!🤗👍

    Derms and estheticians for sure specialize in different things. But I say, their roles can overlap if said esthetician further trained and gains years of experience. Honestly the most crucial difference between the two is that one can do actual surgery and prescribe certain drugs when the other cannot.

    • @morgianasartre6709
      @morgianasartre6709 Год назад +12

      Imo it's the other way around that they can overlap if a derm bothers to gain knowledge in the esthetics field aswell, most prefer to stay very clinical and focus on treating serious diseases so don't know much about otc products and their ingredients and don't bother with cosmetic procedures. The esthetician on the other hand will never have access to training that allows them to have the skills to diagnose anything (unless they study to be a doctor) so I feel like there is less overlap on their part.

    This is such an under talked about topic in the skin industry. I chose esthetics over dermatology for a lot of reasons but the largest was going back to school for that long.
    The clinical approach to skin is something that estheticians are not as versed or trained on as a derm would be. But for problems like acne, dry skin, toning and non medical conditions I would recommend going to an esthetician. Derms will likely prescribe something over delving deeper into a patient/clients routine and lifestyle.
    I was put on accutane when I never needed it and wasn’t an appropriate candidate for this treatment. This isn’t to say anything bad about derms, but my doctors never once asked a single question about my routine or the products I was using on my skin. Esthetics saved my skin.
    And with that said, simultaneously, we as estheticians cannot diagnose, cure, prescribe or treat. If you have a legitimate concern, go to your dermatologist but if you just need minor maintenance avoid medications and get a facial. Totally agree with Cass on this.

But each time you talk about the „amount“ of money you need to spend to see a doctor, I feel so sorry for everyone, who isn’t able to just set up an appointment to get the help they need.
    I don’t want to bash anything here, because it can take some time here, too to get an appointment or you don’t get an appointment for a derm with deeper knowledge about acne.
    But to have a „free“ option to see a doctor and book a session with an esthetician as an add on and pay for it to do something extra nice for your skin is how it usually goes here.

    As an esthi, I personally have seen an unfortunate amount of clients who have been given really bad advice/ product recommendations from derms. I respect derms but i truly believe that a derm needs to have an esthetician on staff & refer patient’s for consistent treatment plans for dealing with severe acne/other skin issues, monitoring how products are being used. I’ve seen too many clients who are given retinols/differin/topical anti-biotics & don’t know how to properly use them; resulting in severe skin dehydration or severe skin thinning/pain & discomfort.
    I really hope derms & esthis can work together & learn from each other.

    I think there should not be a rivalry, they are very different. One studies 4 years of college, MCAT exam to get accepted in medical school, 4 years medical school, USMLE boards exams part 1, 2 part I, 2 Part 2 and Part 3, apply for residency and 3 years of dermatology and exams to validate vs. the other one who does 600 hours of training doing facials. I think dermatologists don't like when an esthetician recommends stuff and procedures to patients and it ends up harming them.

    Derms handle diseases, medications, life long or serious issues involving any part of the dermis. They're medical doctors who will typically be diagnostic and to the point. Esths handle more acute and experiential things, and they focus more on treatments for specific everyday problems. They're professionals in a service industry that involves something akin to a therapy treatment.
    Comparing the two is like comparing psychiatrists and psychologists. They're not opponents or entirely independent from each other; most people will find value and relief in consulting with both and every professional I've met has understood that both fields are important when helping patients.

    In my country going to a dermatologist is quite rare unless you suspect a disease but I recently did and it was a shitty experience. I have recently started getting these weird scar-like creases on my face (first thought they might be pillow creases) that just come out of nowhere for no reason, as well as these weird dark blotches on some areas that also came out of nowhere, and a couple of older blotches that haven't gone away, I wanted to know what these all are and how to get rid of them. The derm looked at my face and said she didn't see anything. About the scars/creases/ whatever the f they are, she said that since they came out of nowhere they probably aren't scars. Then she sent me on my way with the bill. I got zero help or clarity about the issues I had. She did however prescribe me an acne cream. Except that I don't have acne. Yeah, I had a couple of pimples and blackheads. But that's not what I went there for. The scars have gone from one to seven within a month and my chin still looks like someone punched me because of that big dark blotch and every day I hate my face a bit more. And the derm was absolutely useless.

    Might be something specific to US but in both countries where I lived at dermatologists do medical grade treatments - peels, lasers, dermapen, prp, dermabrasion, surgeries, diagnostic tests. The sentence where you say "derm will not massage your face or apply products" is either a generalization or misinformation. They will apply products - maybe a peel, may be your own plasma, maybe botox injection, maybe your new prescription cream that they will apply to show you how to use it, maybe a wound dressing... There are really plenty of ways how a dermatologists will touch your skin, even massage sometimes and even more ways of how they will apply products to your skin.

    To be honest I’m an esthetician, and I can’t tell you many obnoxious things I’ve heard clients have told me their derms tell me. Many overprescribe retinols and encourage acne sufferers to over exfoliate. One poor lady was even told by her derm to not wear sunscreen! I didn’t think her acne was as bad as both thought it was!
    Obviously there are great derms, but this was also my experience as a teen with mild acne. I had very very mild acne when I was teen, & I was put on so much medication that actually destroyed my skin. I have actually learned how to turn my skin around by myself.

    I jump from skin treatment shops and spas a lot, never going back to those who like to sell you their stuff while doing your facial. I hate it when an esthe asks what my routine is, and pushes their cleanser, or toner, or cream because apparently I'm way too oily (i'm not, i'm oily and dehydrated with patches of dryness) and their products would cure my face. 😮‍💨
    As for a derm I've only ever trusted one, and she's not even in my area. The amount of people in her clinic everytime i have an appointment says a lot. Haven't visited for more than 2 years. Wish i could find another trustworthy one near me.

    there are of course overlaps but aestheticians are taught how to maintain health while derms are taught how to treat disease. but since "anti-aging" is so lucrative, derms naturally gravitated to the "health" space. hence, the rivalry. at the end of the day, a good derm and a good aesthetician are very similar: they are open-minded, believe their clients and are committed to educating rather than just admonishing.

      @@morgianasartre6709 I don't care about belief, I care about research studies. If a person is applying drying ingredients like vitamin A, salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide, their skin will get dry and therefore they need to use a moisturizer with humectants to counteract that and protect their skin barrier. Telling people who use products or have any sebaceous gland issue that they don't need to use moisturizer is harmful.
      It's another thing if some someone is young, has normal skin with no skin concerns, no overproduction of oil, good skin-related genetics, and they don't use any drying or oil-stripping products - then sure they might not need moisturizer. But that is a very tiny minority of people.

      Melanin in your skin doesnt give you much SPF. Even the deep skin tones provide SPFs only in the teens. Remember, coverings (shades, clothes, hats, walls, etc.) provide SPF. Michelle from LMBS did a really good video on this. She summarizes that most people -- no matter the skin tone -- only need to wear sunscreen indoors if there is sunlight directly hitting them or if they are sitting next to a big window and can see lots of sky. I'm sure the expert answer will always be to slather yourself in sunscreen all the time, but it feels excessive to me too. I use a moisturizer with SPF 15 when I wash my face in the morning, but won't put on anything else if I'm just staying inside. I only really use it on my body for a weekend music festival or beach vacation, and even then I don't do a fantastic job at remembering to reapply or anything. The sporadic use is enough for me to not get sunburn, which is good enough for me!

    • @cheekyb71
      @cheekyb71 Год назад +1

      Since UV light passes through glass and even occasional contact can cause skin cancer, the answer is yes - you should ALWAYS be wearing SPF! Most dermatologists are recommending minimum of SPF 30 at all times

    • @morgianasartre6709
      @morgianasartre6709 Год назад

      Imo it is excessive, especially to reapply if you are staying indoors. Like, you won't get cancer from that, you just won't, people who get skin cancer typically have a long history of tanning beds and frequent sun exposure at peak hours, not someone who sits home all day without sunscreen. It would be beneficial however for those who are militant about anti-aging, are trying to fade hyperpigmentation or are using actives that make the skin more sensitive to the sun like acids in their routine.

    Here’s an allegory. Members of my family have PhD’s in Nutrition. They have done research, made important discoveries, created online nutrition applications for hospitals and dietitians, and more. Dietitians repeatedly think they know more, even are derisive of the advice received from my family. Guess which ones prove right most often? It’s those with the doctorates. Does that mean the dietitians don’t have good info? Absolutely not! Those who work in “the trenches” have a different perspective and understanding than the docs because they have more direct experience with people. It’s real world versus theoretical, and I mean by that that they each have value and fill an important need.

I say going to a dermatologist is way better🎉💯🙋🏻‍♀️🥰 because the doctor on know what is causing your symptoms can even draw blood to see what your blood has to say if there is certain diseases or genetic defects. That causes certain skin allergies overgrowth boils cysts folliculitis. Acne scarring, keloid. Certain skin yeast infections 👎🏼🏥👩🏻‍⚕️⚕️⭐💯‼️👀🥃 having a good evening medical doctor if you don't have a dermatologist also works. Both are good. They’re oftentimes rushed and don’t actually listen to a persons full story and they never take into account diet. Ever. I’ve seen estheticians who’ve done the same but I find they’re far more holistic and far more educated on different ways to actually heal the skin vs just giving out medicine and creams.
