  • The COVID-19 pandemic revealed the flaws of the food supply chain - when breakdown in logistics caused fruit harvests to be left to rot on farms, or milk in American farms to be poured down the drain.
But food loss has been happening in supply chains long before that. According to the United Nations Food and Agricultural Organisation, in Asia, up to 40% of food is lost after harvest during handling and storage - never even making it to the shops at all.
Poor handling, long travel distances, and bad storage practices cause massive losses. In fruit and vegetable-growing powerhouse Indonesia, up to 50% of fresh produce is damaged post-harvest. That's where social enterprise TaniHub is stepping in, to cut down the many stages of sorting and distribution, and work with farmers to help them improve post-harvest handling practices and understand market demand.
In India, heavy rainfall cause crops like onions to be damaged en route to markets. Social enterprise Science 4 Society or S4S is using solar dehydrators to process turmeric, onions and ginger before packaging, giving them a longer shelf-life.

Why not redirect scientists efforts to make healthy canned food? Why not use internet and social media to advertise the deliciousness of canned food? Take food that is still safe to eat but skin looks not so good, to remove the skin, canned the food and sell or donate to the poor people?

It’s not really a total loss. Just take the bad stuff and compost it. Then the nutrients go back into the soil to make more good produce

Generally most people add a bit of salt to their cooking. This insight is not 100% for everything, but instead of the salt added at the restaurant or food court level where the salt properties of preserving food are not fully utilised. Why not at the farm level, add salt to dehydrated onions, garlic or ginger to preserve the must have items and lengthen their packaging shelf life? Offer unsalted and salted versions. Pre add salt to sliced onions saves time, effort and hassle for the consumers. This will reduce food waste and a win-win for most stakeholders.

this is a bad idea. Food processing plant or farm will need to provide more cost for place to salt them not to mention provide different storage for the salted one. Moreover salted will be more expensive and I reckon customer will not buy them and choose unsalted. There will be more food waste

@@anggasurbakti8269 just like there wasn't any scientifically analysis and scholar research papers from different scientists of reputable universities in different world regions over decades of research (bar anyone can post to a website claims/internet) to back up my suggestion. The same principles applies to your assertion. I respectfully disagree and thank you for sharing your views of which I respect that. :)

Coating made from silkworm cocoon means they are no longer vegan. I'm not vegan so don't mind but those who are vegan need to be aware.

The inventory system of producers and manufacturers should always be able to reconcile their respective ethical standards in logistics, warehousing, distribution as well as receivership in order not to incur and or prevent losses. The supermarkets and association of retail stores can coordinate with one another in order not to experience losses by means of providing gift certificates, coupons, lifetime cards to their respective associations of supermarkets, groceries and stalls owners in order to realize their purchases and anticipate the shelf life of the produce, products (pertains to industries)not just produce of fruits and vegetables so as not to have dumpster diving, divers, we anticipate sales and expenditures or purchases to avoid losses, only ethical standards and quality of both private and public sectors and industries that are industrious. SME General practices, practitioners all fields of studies and industries are excellent in the framework of organizations.
