I saw Gary Player win at Carnoustie in 1968. I was 15 years old and played off 12. I came from Aberdeen. What I remember was the par-5 14th hole. Green was protected by a pair of bunkers that squeeze into each side of the fairway 70 yards from the green. Day four. Howling wind against. Typical links on the sturdy east coast between Aberdeen and Dundee - railway line passes by. Anyway he eagled the hole. A massive 3 wood shot - his second - flew it into the teeth of the gale and sailed over everything and landed 2 or 3 feet from the pin. Remember back in the day the clubs were not the same we all use today. I played Carnoustie as a youngster and was reasonably good. Never got par on that hole and the 18th? Jesus! Memories. Play Sudbury in London nowadays.
Happy new year to all the golf mates👍 Just like to say Liam your channel is a breath of fresh air and I appreciate all the time you put into creating the videos. Had a hip replacement earlier in the year and being in my 40s thought that might be the end of it for me. Your channel during my painful recovery kept me laughing and motivated me to get back to enjoying my golf more. Glad to say that I’m playing off 7 again now and enjoying my golf more than ever. Visited Rotherham last week driving up from Cornwall and took the fivers off my golf mates.Keep up the good work🏌️♂️
Steve, check out Julian Mellor’s web site. Easiest golf swing for players with issues. I turn 71 in January and will definitely follow his methodology.
Much harder in the wind of course. Played it back in 2004, fantastic experience. Thanks Liam, brought back nice memories for me. Scott, what a gent. Lovely video lads, makes me want to be there. Happy New year to you all 👍
Nice bunch. Nothing like golf in it's birthplace especially if the weather somewhat cooperates. Cool and windy here in Arizona. All the best in the new year.
Scot...at Carnoustie...in Scotland? How'd you pull that win out of your arse?! The course looked beautiful. And made my brown-eye pucker looking at those round and swelling greens! Well done Mate!!
That looked Lovely Liam , great to see Simon again on a vlog . why did you have to have mats on the fairway ? looked like you were Stricking the ball well Liam .
From an American who plays old Hogan blades, I say thank you for the glimpse of this historical course and thank you for being a true gentleman. And I love Guinness with a good cigar.
THANKS! Planning to come up to Aberdeen in October and will be bringing my clubs. Try and fit your amazing course into our schedule. Wifie plays off 28. I try to play to 12. But if I go round in one under 5 that'll do.
Liam, I play a Carnoustie every year in the tassie, those last 3 holes aw brutal, in face the last 5 from spectacles on are card wreckers, but we have to play it off the deck and off the back tees, love the place and always made to feel welcome by the locals, I once shot level gross round the champs which was quite pleasing 😝
Fantastic video. Scott is a class act and I’m loving the mini matts. That’s divot free golf as far as I’m concerned. Liam, only you could lose a hard earned fiver like that, mate. Hope to God you found it. Many thanks gentlemen.
Moment I saw this, eyebrows went up. Then saw you were not even off the back tees, nor was the wind blowing! This, in my opinion, is the hardest course in golf. Tom Watson says 16 is hardest par 3 in the world. Played in the Carnoustie Country Classic a few times. Once, the starter from Scottish Golf Union, says " fortunate you are today boys, you will be playing in the same wind that Mr Nicklaus took 82 strokes".... That helped!
Happy New Year Liam! Yes totally agree those last three holes are the toughest closing holes that I have ever played! For me the 17th is the hardest on the course, the way that the burn threads around the fairway makes the tee shot (usually into the wind) a total bitch!!!!!
I played Carnoustie on Saturday and 16 was 235 for a 3 that’s ridiculous! The back 9 plays long... I managed to shoot a 84! Never been so nervous as I was when I had the starter on the first, managed to rip my 5 down the middle.
Liam, looks like a beautiful sea side course but without trees to line the fairways, I tend to get confused as to which fairway I am on! Played Cabot Links and Cabot Cliffs on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia last October and loved the format, only a few trees. Don’t care for the fairway mat but if if protects the corse, why not use it. Wouldn’t work here.
How I would love to play this course and some others across the pond! I have the photograph of Mr. Nicklaus on the Bridge at the 18th Hole at St. Andrews, framed and in my Den, along with a pristine £5 note with Mr. Nicklaus also framed. I also have an art piece I did of Jack winning his last Master's Championship hanging in my Den. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Tiger Woods, but I grew up idolizing Jack, he'll always be my all time favorite golfer!!
I played Carnoustie a few years ago. On 17 I asked the caddie how far to the burn. He said I could not get to it so of course I hit it right in. He bought me a drink after the round, LOL. I did bogie the 18 though.
A new member at ours came from carnoustie, cracking fella but can't understand trees at our place! Not use to trees in the way, but I would say carnoustie is not only the toughest finish but the hardest golf course especially for the pros on open week
If you're just gonna toss it into the wind, I'll take it. 💴 Famous course or not, I wouldn't enjoy playing off mats that I gotta drag around the course.
For me I think the scariest part for me if I played here would be using those little fairway mats. I can see my launching a few high in the air with my swing
Liam, why did you guys use those little pieces of artificial grass out of the fairways? Is Carnoustie preparing for a tournament? Also thanks for the golf my friend and thank Scot for the views of Carnoustie.
Tough course! How do you find the fairway mat? Personally, I hate them! To an extent I understand they want to protect championship courses, although they still expect people to pay very high green fees which doesn't seem right to me. Unfortunately most of the golf clubs round here insist on them and all too often operate horrible winter greens as well.
@@GolfMates so being i have never heard of fairway mats. let me get this right. correct me if i'm wrong. at the high end courses they want you to use these mat's as to not make divots? do you have to use them? and well to me if you do then the pro's should use them in tournament play as well. the rules are made to be even across the board.... this is why people always question things.
+jack mehoff they use them to protect the fairways so the overseas visitors pay top dollar on pristine fairways in summer. Outrageous the fees they get charged as the members pay a fraction in comparison.
jack mehoff They are used through the winter period, typically Nov-March, when grass stops growing in the UK. The thinking is that they prevent excessive wear on the fairway during this period, lessening the effort for green staff to condition the course during the Spring with the aim of having good playing conditions early in the summer. Most clubs allow play from the rough without mats. Obviously in climates where grass grows all year round mats are unnecessary.
@@gooddeedsbeatbad2625 I see. and it is said what they charge. Its the same here in the states. My home course in St Clair Shores MI charges almost double if your a NON-Resident of the city. Most cities around here are like that and yet still want them to buy food and drink... Its hard for people to get into golf especially when you wanna charge outrageous prices. But then again people do. They dont use those around here or at least never seen them. Thank you though for your response.

Thx for your hospitality guys now give me your money haha.

This is why golf is such a great game to spend time with your friends and people you don’t even know, all there for the same reason

Hahaha, great stuff as always Lads! Happy new year!
Carnoustie proberly best course I've played for the test and finish and hole on hole and condition
I've got one of those Jack Nicklaus commemorative £5 notes here in the U.S.
A Scotsman and a Lancashire lad chasing after a five pound note, I bet it didn't get far!!
Cheers to Scott for hosting our host.
Top video pal as usual and seeing scotland on good days is a bonus too. Is the jack nicklaus £5 paper or the new plastic style. ???
Plastic, I think.
They came out on paper so if it's a paper one it's worth what a collector will buy it for. No fiver for you Liam.
Just seen this. It was a paper one Barry, hope he didnt spend it 😂🤓
