    30% more filter area with Prime Guard but less than 5% more weight of media. Telling by itself.

    Lawn tractors aren't fussy about filters, so a 3614 SuperTech from Wal-mart will work fine.

      yep - been using them on my Craftsman lawn mower for years and works perfect. $3.97 vs $15.00 for Kohler. Supertech for the win!

      Spot on...the Walmart brand you mention is Supertek. The number ya'll want is ST 3614 which is around $4 and bonus, mostly in stock. Can't find it? Walmart hides them on the bottom shelf hoping you'll buy the Fram version 3614. The ST 3614 diameter and length and thread match exactly to the 52-050-02 Kohler. You can peer in through the threaded hole in each for a comparison. Inside you will see the exact same metal grid pattern holding back the same pleated media type. (In case you're wondering I have another Kohler mower engine and have been running off brand filters in it for going on 17 years--mostly the tractor store off brands such as at Rural King. No problem.)

    I'd have to go with the Kohler, main reason being that its not made in China. I try to avoid Chi-Comm products if at all possible. That being said, i agree with you in that i think the the Kohler would filter better.

    Yesterday, I watched a vid of them making fake Hyundai/Kia & Toyota filters in India. Completely manual production, no safety gear, child labor, random lengths of filter media, weird brown glue (didn't look like glue, more like clay), didn't crimp or glue the filter seam, spray painted with car paint. But they did use everyone's favorite coil springs. Labels were silk screened. They were actually leak checked, all with the same rubber gasket. Not the one the filter will get before packaging.
    Then I watched the genuine factory filters being made. Almost all automated. Crimped seams. Leaf springs. Powder coat finish. Silk screen label. Leak checked with the gasket that comes on the filter.
    But the fake filters looked almost identical to the real ones. Same boxes.

    Purolator Tech Line TL10241 would be my choice for my Lexus LX470 with 294,000mi currently. Super cheap on Amazon $3.16ea if you buy 16 lol. Get to oil changing! And I would probably use it on my neighbors lawnmower if he wanted me to change it’s oil again

    Typical kohler, high price for nothing particularly special. Other good brands with same or better quality for lower price widely available.

      Seemed the better of the two?

    • @nothanks9050
      @nothanks9050 4 месяца назад

      @@ChrisPatrick-q6k Yes, but the other filter was a cheap brand. High quality automotive equivalent usually half price or even less where I am. I run a kohler commercially that takes this filter. That yellow paint job is very expensive. Some Kohler dealers try to claim it flows better than an automotive equivalent but I see no difference. The kohler used to have a different style of inlet holes so they've changed their design or likely supplier (probably to save money) in recent years. I've had to throw a lot of parts at this engine with less than 500 hundred hours on it and the cost of parts that shouldn't need to be replaced so soon to begin with is very high. Nothing lubrication related, coils, head gaskets, ignition switch etc Over 20 years in production they should be fully dialled in and bullet proof by now. Parts supply in Europe is a disgrace but that's another story.

    • @WhipCityWrencher
      @WhipCityWrencher  4 месяца назад

      I think they are okay to use, it certainly can't hurt. I just don't know if the particles caught by the magnet would have been caught by the filter media anyway.

    • @Nozinbonsai
      @Nozinbonsai 4 месяца назад

      Just buy a small super magnet and stick it on the can. Pull them off and reuse when you change the filter.

  • @Nozinbonsai
    @Nozinbonsai 4 месяца назад

    Overspray definitely a problem, if it comes off and plugs the media, the bypass opens and thats not good.

  • @faxmen09
    @faxmen09 4 месяца назад +6

    Whip, I think the comparison here is between a dedicated OPE filter (Kohler) and an automotive application filter, the Prime Guard. It's why the PG is a bit longer. As long as the longer automotive application fits always going to be less expensive than OPE. And, many will have silicone adbv too. So here, I'd buy on price. Thanks for vid.

    PL10241 is an option, the Purolator One. The Kohler is the same filter used on Small Two Cylinder engines. It is why i will not use them on a 4 Cylinder Engines made by Ford. I prefer a FL400S or a FL1A which is the same 3/4 x 16 thread and Gasket size, but far more filtration material and flow rate. Manufactures don't care about Flow Rates, just what is the cheapest to put on the cars and trucks anymore.

    This is a hard size to find a cross reference in and the Kohler and Briggs and Stratton filers are very expensive. While the Chinese filters are much cheaper and ok filtration, I tried them and they always drained back oil past the ADBV when the engine was shut down. The next start, the oil filter would have to refill before oil pressure light went out. It sounds strange because looking at them, they seem ok but I tried 2 filters out of a case and it was the same story. That’s why I stick to the factory filters for my small engines.
