If I had pots of money and wanted a crew that actually would have done the job right, I’d love to bring Mike Holmes guys in, his ethics and high quality product bar none...
I really do enjoy your sayings do it right the first time I watch all your programs and I learned a lot from you what not to do and what to do Mike Holmes you are the best
One of my friends was looking to buy a house and they found a gorgeous cottage in a very nice area. They thought everything looked good from what they could see. They got a building inspector to check over the house and his report back to them was very brief. " Do not buy, the house is full of termites" . That was gave my friend all the info she needed.
I have done new construction and remodeling in Southeast Virginia for 25 years. I have never seen anything as bad as this “lipstick on a pig“ in my entire life it was absolutely unforgivable what the people that covered up all of that bullshit did they should be held criminally liable for everything that they did, no other way to put it criminally liable as bad as it was part of that house could’ve collapsed
Holmes is a true gentleman at 21:22: he apologized for cussing in front of the homeowners, and then helped the lady of the house up out of the basement.
@@Guillotines_For_Globalists It's a little crude by some standards. But calling it cussing is a bit of a stretch. I would be using much stronger language to describe the sellers of this home who purposely covered these problems up. Legally, they are required to disclose all the problems with the home. That's true in the United States. And I think Canada as well where this show takes place. With all the evidence Mike Holmes can provide, these new homeowners may have good grounds for legal action.
Didn’t see a handrail on the basement stairs. Looks like the Orkin man didn’t do a very good job when the homeowners called him in. The previous homeowner and the flipper need to be sued.
My uncle died of cancer due to asbestos exposure where he worked for decades. Asbestos that has been disturbed is deadly. Those workers who worked in the house before the family bought it are at risk. Thank God for Mike & his team. Bless the homeowners.
Mike made me laugh so hard when he was on his knees opening the door. Mike and his team do a beautiful job and always do it to code and correct. I really didn't think this house was going to be saved at all but Mike and his team came through like always. I hope these people were able to go after the person who didn't care about anyone or anything but just a cheap way to get a buck.
They always find a way even if means taking most of the house down. $150K (Canadian presumably, so a bit less in USD) back around 2010, which would cost about double today. Unfortunately, this is all too common and often one has little recourse against the seller even in extreme situations like this. Buying used real estate is much like buying a used car. It's buyer beware.
Wow another family saved from death, Great job Mike & crew, always great to See your kids, keep up great job... When you are done fixing Canada Please Please come fix America...
Very nice renovation, but they forgot to show us the back of the house with the new and improved steps. The young homeowners were taken advantage of by the seller and the seller's realtor. If there was a bidding war of ten offers, that was a sign to step back, and shop elsewhere. It does not mean that the house is worth top dollar, which they paid.
The doors in the basement are a huge red flag not a little thing. Best thing you can do is remove the asbestos as a homeowner. Even the state inspector said more people should do it themselves and not get ripped off.
Cloverdale, Edmonton, Alberta early 1900s, after 1911. My father's father's basement was open with dirt. Dirt shelving in basement, store can food. Duck board, like trench boards in war, to get around basement. More and More of Mike Holmes, the more I hate that construction.
What are the three most important things when you buy a house? Location, location, location. Do tou see design, quality, maintenance, or code compliance anywhere on that list? All folks shop by is financing. Most are so mortgaged up they can’t afford maintenance or remodeling.
Inspectors are all alike They got things they look for for one guy looks for holes in the floor one guy looking for electrical one guy looking at the roof there’s no consequences to their bad inspection
I'm no expert in Canadian law, but in the US, most but not all states require the homeowner to disclose issues they know about. This ranges from Massachusetts, where seller disclosure is not required, to California, where you have to identify known issues including whether someone has died in the house in the last few years. Additionally they most likely would have to prove the homeowner knew about the damage. If someone in this situation wanted to consider it, I would start by calling local pest control people to see if the house had been previously inspected or treated by them. Now, theoretically they could sue the inspector for something called "detrimental reliance." They hired the inspector for their expertise, and he missed something that was obvious, dangerous, and expensive to fix. However, again in the US, you can only sue for damages. If the homeowner had to repair this at their own cost, they could sue for the cost of repairs plus stating elsewhere for all that time during the repair (housing and food, since you can't cook in a hotel). However, since Mike came in and fixed it on his dime, they're not out that money. I don't know if the show paid for their hotel during that time. I don't think Mike could sue because he didn't have a contract with the inspector himself. Further, most inspectors' contracts limit their liability to the cost of the inspection. So if the inspector were found liable in the US, they would most likely only have to return their fee. However with an issue as blatant as this, a lawyer might advise going after the inspector for fraud. And I would certainly report this to their governing body.
So what did they do about the old wood siding on the wall right next to the neighbor's house? Just ignore that it no longer has paint protecting it and that it's rotting?
If there were any way on this earth to sue the hell out of that contractor,. I's have him in prison for the rest of his less than WORTHLESS life! AND he'd be paying them back for every cent Mike had to spend to fix what he totally screwed up! That "inspector" would be inspecting garbage cans for the rest of his career. This couple was failed in so may ways by so many people!
And to think that this Criminal Nonsense goes on all the time . . . yet it's always met with no recourse but to hire another person who will charge you another fortune to fix it . . . if you are lucky.
Yeah, 😢 once that cast iron starts going, it’s like dominos trying to find good part to connect to. Plan on ripping it all out 99% of the time running into it now (2023) as it’s beyond service life.
In defense of the original home inspector - he can't see behind the walls that have been covered up by whoever flipped the place. There were a few small indications of termites - that was it. That place was hiding a disaster worse than what Holmes thought too until they started gutting the place.
It’s just unbelievable the way people will scam people, to make money.. that’s not you, Mike. The people that did this prior to these got couple moving in should pay for everything.. should be some kind of law on the books. I watch a lot of your shows, and it is just unbelievable what people do.. scares the hell out of me, on the house that I’m living in, if somebody did something like that here..
Why can’t the previous homeowner, flipper, &/or Contractor be sued for this kind of crap??. It’s misrepresentation & deceptive trade practices at the very least!…. Criminal negligence at the very worst.
I am curious , do you not have a rule that states there must be at least two doorways between a kitchen and a toilet?? When I saw the W/C right off the kitchen I was surprised.
Smaller older houses have this "feature" of the half/full bath beside the kitchen. If you have one, get a high flow, but quite, air fan. Make sure the fan stays on an extra few minutes after leaving the bathroom.
Just a wild question, since I'm not from the US and not familiar with the law there, After finding out all the problems of the house, can the homeowner sue (contractor/seller/ inspector)?
In the US yes they would have enough evidence for a strong case though it would be expensive. This is in Canada so I don't know if it would be as easy.
YOU DONT HAVE TO WORRY BOUT THE TERMITES GOIN HOME WITH YA, BUT ROTTEN WOOD IS A FAVORITE PLACE FOR BLACK WIDOWS, I SAW ONE IN MY WORK VAN AND NEVER WORRIED WHAT KIND IT WAS, SO HAPPENED MY ELDEST NEEDED SPIDERS, SO I WENT OUT AND GOT IT, SENT IT TO SCHOOL, THINKIN WOLF SPIDER, THEY THREATENED HER WITH EXPELLSION AND I TOLD THEN, LOOK, SHE HAD ABOVE AND BEYOND WHAT ANYONE ELSE BROUGHT, SHE DIDNT GET EXPELLED, LOL
I like a lot of the messages given in this show. However, I feel it misses when it comes to PPE (personal protective equipment). One example related specifically to this episode would be the use of hard hats. The structure at best was questionable and the head should be protected from falling debris or objects in the ceiling (such as nails). Even when Mike led the owners down to the basement, the owner's should have had hard hats on.
Probably the worst house I've seen Holmes fix. I'm glad these people were rescued, but I feel bad for other folks like this who aren't saved by someone like Holmes. It really is despicable that there's no accountability for this sort of extremely dangerous flim-flam.
Everything is slightly out of focus and the audio has been sped up. What is up with that? I had to dial the audio speed down to .75% for it to sound right. 😞 Like the show, hate what this channel did copying it.
Intentional to keep it up. Some of Holmes full episodes have recently been posted on another more official channel in HD. However, until they post many more, this is the next best thing.

He said CRAP. I wasn't aware that was derogatory!
I doubt that the apology was necessary. The homeowners were probably using much stronger language off camera. I know I would be.

Ohhh. I watched it again, and you could be right. That actually makes more sense.
Whoever flipped that house and covered the damage up should literally face criminal charges.

Too bad the inspectors cannot be held accountable, be licensed/tested and be rated. Unfortunately, this world is neither right nor works right.
