The holidays are upon us which means a lot of you will be traveling at 30,000 feet to get to your loved ones. The fear of flying is one of the most common fears in the world, but it doesn’t have to be. I am someone who suffered from acute panic whenever I was on a plane.
Everything from driving to the airport to getting on the plane, the sounds the engine makes and the little signs we look for was scarier than the next.
Now, I practically live on planes (over 250 flights a year), and in this video I show you how I cured my fear of flying forever. In this video, you will learn five steps that I use to this day to make something that used to absolutely terrify me something that I do all of the time.

I'm still not totally comfortable with planes, but I'm luckily over my fear of turbulence. Some tips I use:
    1. Remind myself that turbulence is NOT dangerous. I say the following as a mantra to myself: "Turbulence doesn't bring planes down." It just doesn't. Throughout the history of commercial air travel, the number of crashes caused by turbulence, even INDIRECTLY, can be counted on one hand. The only real danger associated with turbulence is if there's severe turbulence (extremely rare) and you bump your head or something, which can be avoided by just always having your seatbelt buckled. Planes are built to withstand more turbulence than the plane will ever actually experience--there's an exact number on this somewhere. It's not dangerous, just uncomfortable.
    2. Think about what the pilots are doing during turbulence. I used to have this image in my head of the pilots being stressed and freaked out during turbulence, trying to man the controls and remember what they learned in school. Actually, during episodes of turbulence, pilots are just chatting and joking with each other as usual, maybe complaining about a spilled soda, or asking air control if they can change flight paths or altitude to make things more comfortable for the passengers--this is why you might hear some funny sounds from the engines. They pilots aren't worried at all, and you shouldn't be either.
    3. During turbulence, the plane may FEEL like it's dropping hundreds of feet, but even in severe turbulence the actual vertical displacement of the plane is only about 10 feet. Seriously. Look it up!
    4. Expect turbulence when flying over mountain ranges or anything.
    5. During turbulence, the plane is simply following the air. The plane isn't dropping out of the sky or losing its foothold. The streamline the plane is flying along just happens to be a little crooked, and the plane is simply flying in it. This is akin to car traveling on a bumpy road.

Although I understand the logic in the points listed, point 5 still freaks me out. Yes, turbulence at 35,000ft is akin to a car on a bumpy road, but that car isn't 35,000ft in the air. Someone with a fear of heights doesn't think in that way. 35,000ft is still up in the air, not on terra firma.

Don’t let fear rob you of living- you are not going anywhere until it’s your time to go- and when it is- it’s going to happen if your on a plane, the couch , or asleep! To understand this , is so freeing, and you will then begin to live! Trust this. We are all in Gods hands anyway. ❤

Pro-tip from an anxious flyer: During turbulence, sit up very straight in your chair, so that your back is not touching the seat. This creates your own stabilisation and gives you more of a feeling of the plane moving around “you”.

I have had an intense fear of flying for over 30 years. I would even get anxious just going to the airport to drop someone off or pick someone up. I had not flown since 1993. I planned a trip to Europe that has been on my bucket list for over 40 years. This video REALLY helped me get on the plane! I just got back from a two week trip to Europe! One thing I kept in my head was the fact that I would not be worried about this flight if I was home watching tv or doing something else. The only reason I was scared of this flight was because I was ON it. So I imagined myself being somewhere else and having no concern of the flight. For some reason that really helped me.

I am here, back home! safe and sound! I wasn't scared about turbulence. I think I was more scared about having an anxiety/panic attack than the actual fear to fly. I brought good quality chocolates with me. I started with small bites 3h b4 the flight. Then, a huge one 30min before boarding. I think I did good. I was a bit nervous on the first flight and once I sat, I thought it was small (space). Then felt my heart and thought about the festival that was waiting for me once I arrived to my destiny. I also remembered a lot from this video and helped me realize I was always getting one step closer to my destiny! The way back home was even better. I observed differences from the first and second flight. I kinda studied both :D I'm so happy and even excited to board again to another destiny!! My flight was about 1h50min. I even felt it sooooo short :D let me know. I even bought a beer during my first flight to congratulate myself for overcoming my fear!!!!! I don't recommend drinking before. mrs ridiculous I used to be terribly afraid of that feeling as well, but what helped me in the end was knowing why exactly a plane does those things. For example, when the plane takes off, it takes off with a high power of the engines, because the power is needed to create the lift! But once you’re at a specific altitude, the pilot throttles back the engines, because now the wings are able to do their job, which creates that initial feeling of “suddenly dropping back to the ground”.

I remember the first time I flew, it was from Zagreb to Madrid in 2011 and when the plane started gaining speed, I was so scared because I had no idea why it's going so damn fast 😂 now, 8 years later, I love everything about flying, last year I flew around 40 times and every flight was great. Turbulence didn't scare me one bit because I knew it was completely normal. Just look outside, put on some music you like and observe the beauty God has created :) how many times you get to see cotton candy clouds and beautiful sunsets even when it's bad weather on the ground? Don't let fear block your life in any way. Fear of the unknown is pointless. Read a book or watch a movie you downloaded before the flight. I also like to write in my travel journal, describing how beautiful the sky is, what my plans are when I arrive to my destination, what I did before the flight. It helps me to keep my mind occupied and time flies by so fast I often feel sad that we're about to land 🙂
Big birds are super safe, trust me ❤

For anyone reading this comment, I used to have quite a significant fear of flying, to the point where I had to use Diazapam to sedate me on one flight. I decided I was going to work through my irrational fear ( which is what it is ) and found this video, and it completely cured my fear. All I would say is to make sure you practice the techniques before you fly, I started 6ish months before I flew, as you need to get disciplined in using them. I also listened to plane noises when driving to get my senses used to the enviroment of a plan. At first even that made me panic, but I used the techniques Mel speaks about and then used them on an actual flight, and it completely worked! As Mel says, be on the alert for your mind hi jacking you, and go straight to your anchor thought. After some practice you will start to notice you automatically associate your flight with positive emotion. Thank you Mel!

    Dear Mel,
Before I watched your video, I was not certain I could ever feel comfortable on an airplane. I am 20 and I have been terribly afraid of flying for the past 8 years. I have to travel a lot to see my family, and this fear has stopped me from doing very important things, such as going to France to visit my Grandmother's grave for the first time... A usual flight for me included vomiting and panic attacks, and a lot of crying. Last week was March break and my family decided to go to Florida. I was excited but very anxious at the thought of taking a plane there. I had been able to remain on the ground for the past year and a half, and so this was especially stressful. I decided to go once again online to see if I could find helpful tips to help me with my fear. I had done this before, but even knowing all the facts about flying and about how safe it really did not help calm my anxiety. But then... I found your video. Your video has changed my life already. Not only did I not panic or vomit on the two flights I took to and back from Florida, I actually managed to enjoy myself at some points during the flights. I have not felt this comfortable on a plane since I was 8 or 9. I was actually relaxing and even singing a little! I did get anxious, I did get scared, but 5,4,3,2,1...Anchor thought, really helped me get through all these moments and to not panic. I am forever grateful to have found your video. I am looking forward to learning more about your work. I am not yet cured of my fear completely, but you have changed things for me. I am seriously thinking of taking the plane to Paris to be able to say goodbye to my grandmother. Thank you for helping people like me! This really works!!!
Thank you thank you thank you!!!!
    With lots of love,
    Liz

I'm an engineer, so learning about how planes work really helped a lot. Also, watching air crash investigation actually helped my fear of flying because with every accident, flying gets safer. One other thought about turbulence. You're flying at 500mph give or take. It's actually amazing to me that there are even long moments of smooth flight. At that speed I'd expect it to be bumpy the whole way.

I watched this twice the day before the 3 hour flight and I have to say it really helped, I still had a lot of anxiety at the airport but felt a lot calmer than expected when I was actually on the plane and the same on the flight home. I am now thinking about where our next holiday will be 😊.

I have more of a fear of not having any control of the plane. I literally can't do anything to control the situation. I have such a fear that I will literally catch a 17 hour bus ride instead of a 5 hour flight. I'm going to be going to South Korea next year with my sister and I've looked up boats and all kinds of things but flying seems to be the only way. Idk how I'm going to overcome this other than becoming a drugged zombie...

    • @helana2203

boats are probably more dangerous just because how long you are out in the middle of no where. plus they would take forever. both are hard to deal with if there actually is a situation because you can’t just swim to shore in ocean water. i have the same fear with control but, the crew are very experienced and are trained to do whatever they can to keep the plane flying until landed safely if something does happen. also there are computers to keep the plane at safe levels at all time.

That's a huge part of the reason why I hate flying, too! No control. I know we have a higher chance of getting in a car accident, etc but the difference is you have more control on the road & you won't be falling thousands of feet from the sky, regardless of what happens. I'm a defensive driver so I respond more to what people do on the road than the rules of the road. Again, control.

I watched this video twice before a transatlantic flight to Great Britain in 2023, which involved a total of four flights on different days. I used to take anti-anxiety medicine for flying, but wanted to find another way deal with the anxiety over turbulence (my primary trigger). These techniques actually worked for me. I did have to actively look for all the good signs, and use the count-down when my anxiety started. It helped to prevent the anxiety from becoming overwhelming. My husband even commented how unusually calm I was on the flights! Today I will fly from Kentucky to Seattle and I expect more turbulence than the transatlantic flight last year. I re-watched to review. Just watching the video made my palms sweat, but right away I’m using my anchor thought. I am not cured, but now have tools to manage the anxiety. Thank you, Mel!!

I always had flight anxiety. A year since the pandemic, it got 100000000x worse. I have postponed my trip from NY to LA at least 6 times cause i am too scared to get on the plane! What’s making it worse is the fact that my wife is really scared as well, and she’s never scared of anything in life. I have guilt of letting her down, my extreme fear of flying, and my constant active anxiety. and Watching that door close just made my anxiety jump from 50-150. My main fear is being 34000 feet in the air and not being able to just walk out and get some fresh air. I am just in the worst place in my life right now. I just want to say sorry to my wife. These are great tips... I too had a fear of flying and had to learn the hard way to take back control of my mind and thoughts! Two things that also helped me, and may assist with one of you, is to EDUCATE yourself about how airplanes work and better understand what the sounds are that you hear while flying. The second thing, which was a secret of mine, was I started keeping a log book of my flights. I would record what sight, sound or sensation I didn't like and then I would conclude that it was obviously normal and my flight made it! When I fly I carry this book with me to remind myself that I have felt, seen and heard all these things before :) My log book has been a game changer for me! Happy Trails!!

I was super scared of flying and somehow landed a job where I was flying all around the world about every 6 weeks (this was about 20 years ago). One of the best tips that helped me was choosing a seat where I could see the flight attendants. If they were calm, so was I. Like Mel, take off was especially panic stricken, however, a tip I use is to see if I could select the exact time the pilot would lift off, kind of like making it a game. I do this with my kids now and they love it. Really takes your mind to a happy place.

One our flight to france from toronto, i got really really bad anxiety during turbulence. I was generally okay until the turbulence. I was crying and gripping my seat. Being able to easily flag a flight attendant and ask her if everything was normal helped. This sweet lady kneeled in the aisle and held me hand and talked me through the turbulence. She asked me about my trip and what i plan to do once i got there, she got me water and explained to me why the plane felt the way it did. I will never forget that. That was the best feeling in the world. She really helped me calm down.

So true, the trip back home is always easier than leaving for me, the idea of seeing my wife and kids always gets me super excited to get the flight going, especially when I'm bringing back gifts for them.

Thanks Mel! I have a fear of turbulence because of a scary flight experience many years ago. I like the anchor thought. I’m going to try it on my next flight.
Also, the “one step closer” mantra is genius. I’ll use it for anytime I’m waiting on something. Love this!

I'm trying 9 years now to get over my fear of falling just because of my ONE bad experience. Fortunately we had great pilots and so we made it safe to the airport.
From this day on I'm still shacking and crying because of my fear when there are some turbulence, but I'm on my way to deal with it, because I still wanna see so many wonderful places and all those feelings they make me very sick every time. I'm so happy that I found your video. It made me realise that I don't need to be afraid I need to be excited for what is waiting for me.

Hi Mel, I’ll try to keep this short. Ive always had a fear of flying. In addition, I do struggle with anxiety and occasional panic attacks. Last year my GF surprised me with a trip to Oahu since our bdays are just days apart. I was scared, filled with anxiety but I made it just fine. Little to no fear, I was surprised. That was my first trip to Hawaii and I was HOOKED. That said, I decided to make Hawaii our birthday destination every year as a tradition. Well, this year, it was supposed to be 12days in west Maui. I got on the plane, sat down and buckled in. As the plane was filling up all I could think about was the door closing and me being trapped, I started to panic, bad! I looked over at my GF began to tear up, burrowed my head in her shoulder and said I gotta go. Her and I abandoned our flight and I ruined our vacation and our birthdays. I learned that my trigger is being trapped, claustrophobic, I guess. The noise of people bordering, all the senseless noise and chatter and the thought of the door closing set me into a downward spiral. I panicked. Fight or flight kicked in and I chose flight, and not the flight to Maui, lol😢. I kept thinking I’m gonna be trapped, what if I have a panic attack, I don’t know these people, what if they make fun of me, what if no one can help me, I’m stuck and I’m in a panic 35,000ft up… I have nowhere to run to recover from this panic. I’m filled with so much guilt Mel, I’m supposed to be in Maui right now, but instead I’m home sitting in my back yard dwelling on this.
What can I do? I watched your video but it all seems easier said than done. How can I practice these techniques to better ready my body and mind for the next attempt? Do I try some sort of prescription drug or something OTC like melatonin? I hear taking melatonin supplements can ease anxiety and fears of flying. Melatonin triggers the release of GABA, GABA then calms the nervous system and rids one of anxiety thus suppressing a potential panic attack. Have you heard this theory? My GF suggested we book some practice trips, short flights from the Bay Area to LA, quick 45min flights. That way if I have to walk off again I’m only out $75 bucks for a plane ticket. I need to overcome this… please help me.

I like all of the tips you said to before and during the flight.
I’m 53 and have never flown. I suffer with anxiety and panic disorders.
I do function and in fact, I drive for a living.
I honestly don’t know if I can actually fly.
I feel when I have a panic attack, I’m going crazy or going to die.
I also convinced myself that my panic attacks are worse than anyone.
Maybe someday I will be brave enough to try flying.
    I’m just not ready now.

A drinking straw works great ! Inhale through the straw and exhale out your nose. The method keeps you focused on the breathing techniques rather than fear of flying and it also prevents hyperventilating

Thanks so much Mel! These tips will certainly help me on my flight from Cleveland to Fort Myers next week! While my fear of flying is not debilitating like other peoples, it's still bothersome. I'm always ok once I make it on the plane and get in the air but sometimes bumps or noises will make me a bit nervous, I certainly will remember the anchor thought thing! Also turbulence, think of it as no different as driving your car down a bumpy road, both are uncomfortable but harmless

I have a serious problem with flying. I havent got on a plane in 8 years. Before i had no problem flying (i loved it), but because i haven'f flown in so long, i just have this pathological fear that something bad is going to happen. I have avoided boarding a plane for years now. Missed so many opportunities. Worst thing is i live on a ISLAND. Small. Any real opportunity is OUT THERE,
Now my twin brother has moved to the mainland (Portugal) to study and work, and is pushing me to visit him. But i am so scared. Weird thing is i LOVE airports but hate the idea of flying....
    ANY HELP? or Advice?
(BTW just the "buying a ticket" thing freaks me out)

Priscila Gauch i only took 1mg of xanax before i board the plane.. 30 minutes before boarding, i took 0.5mg, and then 0.25mg 10 minutes before boarding, and another 0.25 when i'm walking to the plane.. please be careful for the dose.. 6mg is a lot of xanax.. but yes, i can relate to you.. good luck and i hope all goes well! You can do it!

You are so right, being a new flyer, on my way to see my kiddos, suddenly the Captain says...” we’re going to hit more turbulence then expected, so we are going to have the truck come and give us more fuel, because we need to fly at a higher altitude. Immediately, my mind was thinking, ok, this is probably a sign for me to get off this plane. But I did what you said.... I was thinking of seeing my kids I hadn’t seen in 6 months. I started crying and praying and breathing slowly. Thank you!
