I haven't got the lack of soul to do this. I can't divorce myself from the misery inflicted on people. It starts to feel like evolution passed me by. The people who will be left with just the honest stuff they could make.

'Daniel' assumes that there will be few consequences for his actions if he is caught by the law. Maybe. But he's oblivious to what revenge one of his victims may take on him should he be doxxed.

Great interview! Incredible (and depressing) how that scammer seems to feel about what he's doing!
As someone who works professionally helping immigrants, I can tell you with almost 99% certainty that this is a first-generation child of (probably legal) immigrants. I can pick up the ever-so-slight accent on particular words. I have a guess based on the accent but don't want to say which country, to avoid discrimination. I would also guess at least one of the parents of this youth is a nurse or equivalent----hence the middle-class yet educated, and somewhat "STEM" based aptitude of the scammer. This also explains why the parents are less likely to be suspicious etc of the material trappings--as an immigrant they are less attuned to the signs or working too hard to notice. The parents might just believe their personal visions of their offspring achieving the American dream are manifesting themselves. This also explains why no one in their social circles has sold them out yet; the community is more tight-knit. Sharing this information because the scam disgusts me, and whatever profiling can help apprehend or bust up this crew I'm happy to share.
This was so fascinating ... and disturbing ... at the same time. Wow! I hope someone recognizes this scammer kids voice and an investigation opens to track down the money to get returned to all the victims.

Don't save your authenticator back up codes in a password manager, you're exposing your accounts to a remote attack. If the attacker gets access to your password manager they have both your password and your 2fa. Money gone!Save your back up codes offline on paper or encrypted SD card. Junseth says some people use two password managers, keeping 2fa on a second password manager, but that's still leaving your backup codes vulnerable to online attack.
Fascinating record of your interview Junseth. Clever questions to draw Daniel out. The profiling. The gaming industry has gotten very interesting. So has security of hardware/software and understanding where the potential vulnerabilities are when using them. Main takeaway - make the convenient inconvenient for yourself. I'm wondering if the "good databases" come from someone internally at the exchanges.
Peter you can use a solicitors address as your registered address for a UK company director register, or better still, open a Gibraltar limited company and have that Gib registered company as the registered director, the Gibraltar company house will not give out any personal details at any time. I hope that helps you with privacy and security.

Not gonna lie, when they both laughed at 1.2 BTC, that hurt. Hey, in an age when the average American can't afford a $500 emergency, I don't want to feel shy and shamed about the little BTC I've got and worked extremely hard for as a working-class guy.
100%. While I'm not sure Junseth meant to belittle folk with small bitcoin holdings, I like you felt the same way. But, whether intended or not, it's not productive for the haves to make the have-lesses feel this way. If greater bitcoin adoption is to the betterment of all bitcoiners, then every btc holding is to be celebrated. Surely most holdings of bitcoin began with smaller amounts than the holder aspires to. The best way to orange pill someone is to gift them a small amount of btc so they have skin in the game & can begin to learn, understand & transact in btc.

Wow, Idk where to even start but:
1. He gave up a LOT of identifying information (first car scat pack, friend who went to jail for 2yrs in a $1.1M case, CB name in Minecraft, Louis Vuitton purchase, etc.)
2. This kid is what society gets when it so royally screws any hope of a decent future 'playing by the rules'.
This is the "Fuck It", the one of the five F's that doesn't get talked about nearly enough (Fight, Flight, Freeze, Follow, Fuck It - Turchin). Expect a lot more of this sort of mentality/behavior from young people, and even worse over the coming decade
3. Most people are morons and do not take OpSec nearly serious enough
4. This kid is going to prison, for SURE

Great pod. To me, it seems like Junseth was way overthinking the rationale behind the morality of this kind of scam. I think its _very_ clear that scammers like this dont consider this stealing *at all*. The way they see it, and a better metaphor, is that they are walking into a Wal-Mart and asking the clerk if they can have the flat screen TV on display. The clerk says "sure thing", hands them the TV, and walks them out of the store - bypassing the register. The difference (in their mind) is 100% about the fact that there is no threat attached to begin with, and no consequences to to denial. Every target is free to say "no", and then the scammer just moves on.
Good luck explaining that rational to a judge.

FYI alphabet boys can run his voice on their recognition software to get to him. This guy’s done. Even if it wasn’t for the voice, he isn’t sophisticated and talks too much. I can see a dozen ways he’s been compromised by the Swan transaction alone.

It isn’t necessarily a good idea to disable your Google authenticator cloud backup.
It all depends on your setup.
If your Phone crashes, gets lost or is stolen, you are locked out of all your 2FA accounts.
You can back it up on a second phone or save the codes in a password manager, and then disable the cloud. Remember, you need a 2FA backup code for each individual service or website.
But if you give away your Google password and you use Gmail you would be fucked as well.
It also depends, what are you securing? Do you use strong passwords?
Anyway you have to think these things through.

This is good stuff and eye opening, but i gotta say to Peters comments, napster was just as much stealing as this kid is doing. Just because it was on a smaller scale against a wealthy band, doesnt change that fact. We all like to justify our own wrongdoings one way or another, and i used napster back in the day.
Good tip on the Google authentication app, lol. Wtf would they not disclose that when you set it up? This kid is in high school and thinks he's doing God's work smh. I've had a few young kids try this on me too and they think it's a game.
