Elvis had a twin brother who died during childbirth. His family was so poor they had to bury him in a shoebox!
I heard this song in 1968 at 12yrs old and cried for the suffering and pain of the boy and his mother. I'm 66
and still cry but I got the message, People need a hand up, not a hand out. Be the change you want to see.
    😇💫🙏

I love seeing young people giving Elvis a Chance. He’s sold more songs than anyone! He was also inducted to all five Halls of Fame. There is a great interview on RUclips by Baz Luhrman (producers of 22’ movie Elvis) and Sam Bell. Sam is a beautiful Blackman that was a childhood friend of Elvis growing up in Tupelo Mississippi ghetto. Sadly. Sam died before the movie came out last June. I think you will learn a lot from it. Elvis was NEVER prejudiced. He loved everyone. He didn’t steal the songs either. He would say who they were from just prior to performing them. There are so many lies out there about Elvis. So sad.

This song was at first shopped around to frank sinatra
but frank knew it wasn't a song he could do...
written by country singer Mac Davis the song comes from his own life growing up in a texas getto where a friend he had growing up & how the choices he made eventually cost him his life...
when ELvis got this song he loved it & wanted to do it... His record company at first said no, it's too controversial.. it's going to hurt your career.... & to that Elvis point blank told them ...Not only am I going to record it... It will be the first single off the album..
The back up singers are the gospel group the sweet inspirations.. which whitney houston's mother was a member of.
thank you for sharing your reaction & for discovering this song.

Elvis grew up very poor In the ghetto of Tupelo Ms in a mostly black community, his family lived in a 2 room shot gun shack that his dad built for them
There were days his family didn't have running water or money to buy food..but he never forgot where he came from..
Elvis and the black community has two parts part 1 and part 2
Also if you can do a reaction to the elvis documentary , elvis a generous heart

Elvis said yes right away but his manager n alot of his ppl told him not to do it because racism was at it's peak n it could ruine him... Elvis didn't care he knew the message needed to get out....He did risk his career but the man sang it anyway...

She never minded being herself 😊. So many great songs to choose from but you must watch “Suspicious Minds Live in Las Vegas”, one of his most iconic performances. You can really see who he was as a person and his personality. Sadly, I still remember the day he died and the largest newspaper article I had ever seen the following day. 😔

My wickedly wonderful stepmother will be 93 on Dec 16th, & my Saint of a Mama’s Bday was Dec 17th🥰 You’re in grand company.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY! The world is a better place w you in it❤️
Mac Davis, the song’s writer, originally took the song to the late GREAT African American triple threat talent Sammy Davis Jr. Sammy said- I’m sorry, I can’t sing this song. I don’t know how to; I’ve never lived this way. But I do know who has- take it to my friend Elvis Presley.
Davis would later tell the story of how Elvis wanted to add that final ‘… and his Mama cries.’ It was not in the original song. Davis was neither too crazy or sure about it. Elvis was lol To quote Davis ‘He was right!’ Those last 3 lil words repeated one more time truly drive home the cyclical nature of the ghetto.
Elvis was so involved in every aspect of his show and on the stage. Arranging the music, directing & conducting both his musicians & his back up singers… the leg shaking & pseudo karate moves are setting tempos, saying ‘again’ or ‘call it- I’m done’, and any vocalists/choir members recognize here that last move was closing the final glorious note every so grandly- and cleanly. You’ll also at times him call out what song is next- there were no predetermined show ‘sets’. It was what struck him would strike that particular audience. He was running everything… except unfortunately his finances and his life😔
Fun fact: Whitney Houston’s Mom was one of his backup singers for a while😊
Looking so fwd to your ‘Echo’ reaction!!
    Stay safe & love much💖

The actual Elvis gets lost to a lot of noise. The false rumors of racism, his love life, and people misunderstanding his actual contributions to music versus arguing over Elvis getting criticized for things others said about him despite his own statements on the matter have drowned out a man who did the very best he could, wasn't perfect but never claimed to be, and lived a short but meaningful life & career that left a legacy as and in some ways, even more relevant today than when he lived.

The Echo will never dye will give you a true look into who Elvis is. To bad you didn't react to the live in the ghetto performance. He was so subtle. Only his voice shown through the lyrics. The song was written by Matt Davis and it was not song artists of his time would do. His manager didn't want him to do it. He made a statement that is still true today. At first Matt didn't like Elvis pronunciation of "Ghetto" he grew to like it. Love this reation. Keep doing Elvis.

He actually does get talked about a lot. Like, more than anyone. His songs and covers of his songs are in TV shows, movies, and commercials are everywhere and references to him are all over TV and movies too. If you've ever seen Lilo & Stitch, Pokémon, Are You Afraid of the Dark (the old or new one), Big Little Lies, The Conjuring 2 & 3, 11.22.63, Zombieland 2, Good Omens, or pretty much anything, there's Elvis songs or references in it. It was funny because a man named Mac Davis wrote the song and he was really hoping that a black person would sing it or at least somebody really famous. That's white. But at that time? In the late 1960s? Nobody dared nobody. Not even the biggest names would not touch it. They all wanted to but they would not touch it with a 10-ft pole and neither would the record companies. He even asked Sammy Davis Jr at some point and he said later that he desperately wanted to do it but even he is a black man didn't feel like he could do it. It was just too risky.
They finally come to Elvis and see what he thinks and apparently his very first reaction immediately was, That's gonna be my next single, boys!
