    Great review, this figure reminded me of my grandfather who was in charge and making parachutes during wwii, he was in the navy and made the rank of senior master chief with his gold stripes, before he passed away he gave me all his metals he have ever earned from wwii to the Korean war, he made sure no one died from his prachutes, he even made his men undue then reassemble the parachutes if he notice it wasn't done the right way, he may have not fought but he played the most important part of the war and that's what made my grandfather a true gi joe in my eyes

      Actually, if you're trying to protect from (Robot Chicken Nerd voice) lasers, you'd want to have reflective parachute material wouldn't you ?
      I mean, the HAL looks beefy enough to shoot something down, but lasers aren't really that powerful enough to damage anything metal armored like in Star Trek... yet, unless it's to blind your enemy or give them radiation burns or blow holes in light nylon chute material.

    I have to say that I really loved the parachute gimmick of the Sky Patrol figures, nevertheless, the only Sky Patrol figure I got back in the day was Static Line. They only way I manged to get the figure to somehow skydive was by completely deploying the parachute beforehand and then throwing the figure from the top of a considerably steep slope just past the backyard of friend's house where we used to play out a lot of GI Joe scenarios.
    About this figure in particular, not to get too much into the current political climate, but I have to say Hasbro did drop the ball by not sticking to the original Airborne character or instead making a brand new character out of this figure.

    I couldn't help but notice the price tag AAFES Army & Air Force Exchange Service.He was originally purchased at either an Army PX Post Exchange or Air Force BX Base Exchange. I had the the leader of Sky Patrol "Skydive he was the one in the blue flight suit originally worn by the Cobra Gyro Viper" I found the parachutes deployed best when you dropped the figures say out of a tree or second story window , as compared to throwing them in the air.

    Great review. If I had to figure out the version thing, I'd likely go with Airborne II v1, but that's just my preference. I have a sneaking suspicion they already had this guy ready to go under a different codename and someone in the bean-counter division realized they needed to retain the Airborne trademark and made them use that instead at the last minute.

  • @gishmoe3088
    @gishmoe3088 4 года назад

    The prices tag is AAFES (American Armed Forces Exchange Service) which means it was bought in a PX. Which means there was no sales tax and even possibly bought overseas. This may or may not justify being priced about a dollar more than the average figure in 1990, just fyi.

    When I first bought my Static Line figure back in 1990, I had to unfurl the chute in order for it to work. The pack stayed on for two throws and mysteriously disappeared. The chute was cool at the time. Good review.

    Nice figure. Dig the whole look. Gun is a bit oversized, but still cool looking. Could have done without the chute. Never was a fan of throwing my joes around. I must agree with you, change the name. There was already and Airbourne, and he was cool. Or redo the head a bit and keep him the original character with and updated look. Speaking of Updated looks. Keep the thin beard. Fits you well.

    Methinks Hooded Cobra Commander could have benefited from some training from Airborne... hmmm ?
    ... well this poseur Airborne anyway...
    I'm not just trying to be a b@ll buster here either. Let me explain.
    I think HOW the chute is packed is key to it's deployment. You showed folding it up and curling it up, kinda like a spiral. I never had any of the parachute GiJoes, well I had the '83 Airborne, one of my favs, but never had a parachute, BUT I used to have a few parachute toys as a kid, like a WWII paratrooper, kinda like an oversize Little Green Army man with the parachute attached to a ring atop his helmet, and I had a Spider-man parachute toy, almost exactly the same size and gimmick.
    Here's how I learned (through trial-and-error) how to get the chute to open almost flawlessly.
    When folding the chute from open, fold it like an accordion, like a paper fan, in a zig-zag pattern, and then do the same when folding it down once it's down to it's linear shape, to have the "Z" pattern let it naturally spring itself open. Make sure to carefully do the lines that way too. I think you'll find that helps immensely and hopefully you do that for the future Sky Patrol reviews. Also, I wasn't a very athletic kid and couldn't throw very high, so always did it from the top deck of our steps. And only once did I toss it in the air because I'd inevitably end up tossing over my shoulder and... yup, you guessed it... right on to the roof.
    Also, I was never opposed to modifying improvements to my figures either, like strapping a #26 rubber band for posters around torsos for uncooperative backpacks or to strap a pistol to a figure's thigh or his rifle across his chest. I won't complain if you decide to do this if it's to protect your figure from tragic parachute injury !

    @ComicTropes 4 года назад +1

    Great episode. As just a figure, it looks great. Usually I dislike repaints but this one is very well done. The laziness of the codename is unfortunate. But even more unfortunate is the fact that the parachute gimmick really doesn’t work. I bet a fair amount of Sky Patrol figures got broken trying to make them float. In fact, I don’t think you should risk testing the other 5 figures when you review them. Just use this clip to explain what happens.

    Great video! I agree that it was simply laziness that had them give the same code-name to a different character. Of course, kids who played with G.I. Joe in 1983 probably wasn't playing with them seven or eight years later. So, they probably figured it was safe to simply re-use the code name rather than make either a real version two or a new name altogether. Still that doesn't excuse their laziness.

    Sky Patrol should have been made of Air Force and Army pilots. A new version of Ace and Slip Stream should have been the leaders. Then have two or three new characters.
    The new "Airborne" is a good figure. However it would have been better if he was given a new name.
    Edit:
    Parachute assembler? No, there is a term for that, it's called rigger. His job is rigger. Riggers maintain, parachutes, and pack them. It's a term carried over from sailing. In the Navy riggers would maintain the sails and rope lines of the ship. A parachute is similar.

Courage would have different file names...? Just a thought!

    It's a controversial and contested practice: tranfering the same codename or title to another character. Comic books have an especially long history of doing this -- Goliath, Power Man, Robin, Flash, Ghost Rider, Captain America, Thor Thunderbird, Firestorm, and Starman are but a few examples.
    Some of the time it makes sense within a given continuity and is grudgingly accepted by readers, but most of the time it is totally reviled by fans of the previous character. In this particular instance, I think I'm okay with Airborne II taking up the mantle since this practice wasn't attempted very often with GIJoe back in the 80's and 90's. When it happens all the time to many different characters for no good reason, that's when I start flipping tables over like I'm an action figure with an arm-flexing battle gimmick.

    Great choice of topic, Hoodie. The original Airborne is my favorite Joe and the reason why I became airborne when I joined the Army. Problem is, Airborne is a helicopter assault trooper, making him air assault, not airborne. Air assault rappels out of helicopters, while airborne jumps from planes. Big difference and a different tab on your uniform. Also, the pandemic is a hoax. Don’t fall for it.

  • @NerdGasims
    @NerdGasims 4 года назад

    The 83 Airborne is a air assault trooper and Air Assault just doesn’t sound good as a codename in my opinion. Air assault and paratrooper is different. Sky Patrol Airborne has jump wings and is a paratrooper meaning he went to Airborne school so it’s fine he has the codename in my opinion. Also when I was in the army anyone that graduated jump school and got their wings was called airborne, I didn’t go to jump school but in my unit we had three guys that did and they were all called airborne. It was great when all three were together and you could just shout “hey airborne” all three would look over and the just point at one and tell them to come over to go inspect a vehicle

    It's not theft if it's won in a war and the Indians lost the war and were still granted land of their own. That's something that no other victor has ever done. Just like when we won California from Mexico in yet another war we paid for the land when America had no legal obligation to do such a thing. Honestly we've been nicer than any other country I can think of pre WWII.
    As for Airborne, the Sky Patrol figure is the best and I never had a problem getting the chute to work. Sounds like you got some performance issues. 😉

    Very bad concept, making all their parachutes and vehicles silver. Like you said, the enemy would see you for miles around, even at night! Not only that, but the vehicles would show up on radar like a son of a bitch. The paint might deflect lasers, but not the millions of bullets, shells and missiles that would be firing at you from all directions! It seems like a unit where you'd send your worst enemy.
