    Thunderchild did its job and died with honour. After it took out the two tripods it had pissed off the other Martians enough to focus all their efforts on that one ship alone. This gave time for the other civilian boats to get away.

      @@bludeuce3855 I would say that they did piss them off as by killing one Martian ship, (two in the book) it was the only real time in the story that humanity gave them a bloody nose. It’s been a while since I read it but as I remember they knew they had to stomp that out immediately and redirected their forces from stopping the civilian ships that were evacuating to gunning down one ship. The Martians turned and started blasting but thunderchild rammed into a second gliding it up like cardboard. thunderchild was a weird ship it was described as a torpedo ram but had guns that was equivalent to a dreadnaught able to fire shots that could turn fishing vessels into match sticks (12 inch gun) but being like that of an ironclad since it was low in the water to protect its vitals as one of the martian rays that pierced and detonated the engine still allowed the ship to continue bowling forward and cleaved the martian tripod before finally succumbing to her battle wounds even while the frontal deck was in flames, either way was a pretty nasty ship for its construction

    This is probably the best of the animations of this story I've seen to date. The Thunderchild has the look of an 1890s British Battleship which is slightly at odds with her description in the original book but closer than any other one to date. That and despite it being completely fictional is very much the kind of name the Royal Navy would give a warship. War of the Worlds was published in 1898 and H.G. Wells wrote that the ship that engaged the Martians was the HMS Thunderchild, which he said was a torpedo ram. At the time when the book was published the premier battleships of the Royal Navy were the pre-dreadnaught Majestic class of ships. I really wish that H.G. Wells had gone into a more detailed account of the battle and instead of a torpedo ram had used a Majestic class ship or two instead in battle with the Martians. He could have made it more of a real battle where several Martian machines match up with 2 or 3 fully armed ships of the line, which promptly destroy 2 or 3 machines due to their own their own arrogance of not realizing just how powerful these ships were. Then the Martians call for back up, and after more machines arrive, another huge battle takes place where the last of the ships sacrifices itself by ramming and firing it's last of it's ammo at the same time to save the civilian ships leaving port. I know the battle sort of took place that way, but by having a more powerful battleship engaging the Martians who had a real chance of winning the battle against the Martians (though not the war), it would have been much more exciting.

    • @glenchapman3899
      @glenchapman3899 2 года назад

      Wells was a real student of military matters. The tactics he described are exactly what the Home Fleet would have done. Putting battleships in among that refugee fleet would have caused more issues than it solved. Remember in that era, targeting systems were extremely primitive so it is doubtful the main guns could even traverse fast enough to be effective against the Martians.

    Good vid. Only criticism, but I can just imagine how difficult it would be, is the lack of ships.
    The scene is described as being very similar to Dunkirk. Hundreds of boats and ships taking people to safety. People scrambling on them. Several packed steamers, on which the narrators brother is onboard.
    The Thunderchild is one of several ironclads, as the navy are (no doubt) being mobilised. It's just the first to reach the flotilla. Laying her life to save thousands.
    The low deck of the iron clad and its silence (thunderchild doesn't approach cannons blazing, as that attracts the heat ray) means it slips through ignored... a silent subtle metal monster. Then it takes out a tripod by literally ramming it, then opens fire with everything and all hell breaks loose.
    The POV character on the steamer gets away, and the following navy battle is assumed by the Narrator as he falls further into despair.

    • @Thenarrator-bh3pp
      @Thenarrator-bh3pp  4 года назад +1

      Wiltshire Medieval Society yes that’s what I thought at first when I first saw this scene in the musical, it seems they only include a handful of fleeing ships, I assume that it was probably difficult to build an animate more ships in to the scene. If I remember rightly the thunder child managed to get right in with the Martians due to its low profile and I think the narrators bother said that it looked like another fighting Machine, or they where curious about its design and didn’t deem it a threat until it was too late. When I animated my thunder child battle I found it difficult to edit extra ships in the back, though I did use some footage from Dunkirk, hopefully in the future I’ll adapt my skills and take another crack at it.

I did see a video interview with him on the BBC website where he said he was excited about it and working with the new media to bring it to a wider audience.

      Dermacrosis yes and not only that the story is really unique when compared to so many other alien invasion story’s which is I think the story has survived for so long as we never see George as a hero but rather a refugee who is just trying to find Carrie in the madness.

    • @Dermacrosis
      @Dermacrosis 5 лет назад

      I personally found the book a disappointment. I am not denying it's uniqueness due to when it was published, it is the daddy of alien invasion stories.
      I am willing to admit that could be because I see religious undertones where there may have been none, and I think that has no place in sci fi.

      the closest we can get to the novel is the ferry scene in 2005 movie
      it wouldnt really make sense for a navy ship to appear there since they of course had shields and thats because of the modern human technology the martians would be destroyed earlier if they had no shields on machines

      Your Imaginary Friend I don’t know why but personally I think the 2005 movie cut a lot of good things from the book and personally I wasn’t too happy about the shift from England to America as that’s what made war of the worlds different from most invasion media today, but atleast it might be in the new BBC adaptation

      @@Thenarrator-bh3pp it was awful, I love the book and thunderchild is my favourite chapter as it shows humanity had a chance and that people thought it. If one torpedo ram takes down 2 then the royal navy with its fleet of pre dreadnoughts could do loads, and i like how that is presented as a saving grace and a dilemma, as the book says how the ships guard the sea but are powerless against the onslaught

    • @Thenarrator-bh3pp
      @Thenarrator-bh3pp  5 лет назад +1

      John Jacob Astor yes the thunder child battle was so perfectly executed that the chapter was so easy to imagine everything, why Spielberg cut it out I’ll never know and the movie itself was to filed with American post 9/11 fears it was trying to connect the aliens to the event and the motives of the aliens are never unclear, where as in the book you feel a small sense of sympathy towards the Martians as the war was only started on the Martians trying to escape their fate.
