  • This electrolyte solution is extremely clean, made from pure silver crystal to use in Lithic's silver cell. The silver nitrate solution acts as the electrolyte which completes the circuit within the electrolytic silver cell, between the anode and cathode. Which plates out extremely pure silver that when done correctly can form beautiful crystal formations.
    Lithic Metals is precious metals refinery which specializes in producing beautifully crafted hand-poured gold and silver bars.

    Hey Jeff,
    There is something about this that really intrigues me. I would like another hobby, and i feel this might help my mind focus and give me joy.
    I am binging your videos but would you be able to point me in a direction to better educate myself? I am also watching and raking notes on chemistry videos which seem to help me comprehend the material.

      Your best resources would be to search CM Hoke, and the goldrefiningforum.com
      The reactions from these experiments are very hazardous. The key is to learn as much as possible about how to do everything safely before you do your first experiment.

      @LithicMetals oh I just downloaded that book. I was reading it about an hour ago.
      I have a very healthy respect for safe laboratory practices. My father was in the medical field and I used to sit with him when he would work on a cancer detection process, but he got sick and died before it went to the FDA. He actually used silver nitrate.
      I will be in touch. Thank you for the reply. 😊

    If you are going for all that purity, there should be NO stainless steel or metal other than silver in the cell! The bowl should be glass or plastic & the cathode should be previously-refined silver sheet. You also need to regularly run tests of the electrolyte to determine the concentrations of metals more electropositive than silver. How do you run those tests? How do you remove those more electropositive metals (such as copper, iron, nickel, etc.) from the electrolyte?

    • @LithicMetals
      @LithicMetals  9 месяцев назад +1

      Naw. The stainless isn't affected at all. It leaves no measurable traces... 0. You can easily tell when the electrolyte is getting close to plating out othe materials, just by looking at it. The real trick is making sure to rinse it completely off the crystal.

    Hey I'm sorry to bug you again...I asked basically the same question on another one of your videos... Didn't see this one or I would have asked on this particular video because the questions are involving making the silver nitrate... What percentage nitric acid do you use? Do you wear a gas mask with an oxygen tank or What type of filter do you use in your gas mask If you use one at all... Or do you just use a well ventilated area?

    • @andersjjensen
      @andersjjensen Год назад +1

      From the amounts he gave he must be using around 92% nitric acid. That's enough that it will "smoke" if the air humidity is high. He is doing all this in a fume hood.
      If you're asking these things because you want to do this yourself I have to say: Please don't. You need at the very least high school level chemistry. Concentrated nitric acid is some angry shit that is, among other dangerous endeavours, used to make explosives and liquid fuel rockets. It will happy dissolve mostly anything not boron silicate glass including pets, your hands and your work bench. It spontaneously catches fire when it comes into contact with a wide range of rubbers, paints, oils and alcohols. The red fumes you saw will merrily kill you by perforating your lungs and drowning you in your own blood plasma. If you're caught with concentrated nitric acid, concentrated sulfuric acid and any kind of organic solvent at the same time you better not have made any "I hate the government" statements online or you'll be facing terrorism charges right quick in a hurry.

    I am just wondering if the electrolyte needs to be completely saturated with silver for the cell to work properly? I see you and also sreetips adding a load of distilled water which makes me wonder if it works with a non saturated electrolyte?

    • @LithicMetals

      You need at least 60g per liter of silver in the electrolyte to get a reaction. I use closer to 300g

    • @LithicMetals

      Building and operating a cell is easy enough. However, working with these chemicals and disposing of the waste... those are issues that need to be thought through very well before you begin.
      The power supply is a simple DC converter. Ebay has the best prices that I generally find.

      @@LithicMetals I have rectangle glass container with plastic lid (IKEA rulez). Regarding waste, I want to reduce silver with sodium formate (formic acid and sodium hydroxide), not to have so much metals in solution, then stockpot liquids with copper, if some silver, gold or other PGM are present. Filter it, keep solids. Put iron into liquid, cement out copper, decant iron salts solution (not harmful), may be neutralize with sodium carbonate and dry it, or get rid of it in liquid form, We have here so called "waste collector yards", where you can leave also waste chemicals. It is "for free" for citizens (read tax payed). No metals go into water or nature...

      @@LithicMetals good point i suppose. It's just confusing because it seems you need both silver and silver nitrate to get started with farming silver. My logical brain says just use silver nitrate off the shelf and you save half the work. I get that it's expensive, but then does that imply that the yield is not sufficient to justify the cost of ready made silver nitrate?
