Le Traité de Trianon (4 juin 1920) règle les accords de paix entre le royaume de Hongrie et les Alliés. Il signifie surtout pour la Hongrie l’amputation des 2/3 de son territoire en le réduisant à un noyau de 93 000 km². Des lambeaux sont perdus de tous les côtés au profit des Tchèques, des Slovaques, des Croates, des Serbes, des Roumains, etc. La question des nationalités apparait insoluble de façon totalement satisfaisante, et de fait ce sont de nombreux Magyars qui se retrouvent incorporés dans de nouveaux ensembles nationaux.
My dear friend! I really appreciate your effort in giving an explanation of the most sensitive issue in Hungary! For nowadays the Hungarian rate in the population of neighbors has dramatically decreased since WW I, due to the executions, chasing, and aggressive assimilation attempts. For instance in Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu or in Czechoslovakia under Edvard Beneš and his decrees and the Hlinka Guard and so on. 2. After WW II most of the Hungarian schools were closed and the people had to use a foreign language as their mother tongue. Even though Hungary signed a contract with Ukraine in which Hungary stated that it does not have and will not have any territorial claims against Ukraine and sees Ukraine as the most important economical ally, Ukraine still regulates the usage of the Hungarian language. 3. The neighbors of Hungary created their electoral districts in such a way that the Hungarians living in the same block ( in their country) would always be in the minority. Therefore, 2.5 million Hungarians lost their political representation. There would be some other minor missing details, but these were the most important for me. Don't forget that the reason the Hungarians were in those lands in the first place is because they did the same things (and worse!) to the native slavs, romanians and pushed them out to expand their own Hunagrian empire- Also look at the region of Békescsaba, once almost entirely Slovak up to the 2nd world war, which is now for the same reasons more Hungarian
@@scottbaker5421 Can you give me an example for the worse thing ? Békéscsaba (or Békešská Čaba) is a Hungarian city. The name of the city doesn't even mean anything in Slovak. See also Prince Csaba in Hungarian history. The city was depopulated several times. First during the Turkish subjugation, and later in the 17th century when the Serbs burned it. After that, we satteled Slovaks, Germans and Hungarians there. What you might be thinking of is population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary...well, that's exactly what I bet on. After 1920, according to the Benes decrees, Hungarians could not own anything in Slovakia. A lot of people left Czechoslovakia for Hungary on their own (or under duress). In Hungary, for another 50 years or so, people lived in houses made of wagons, because there were not enough buildings (let's say it didn't help that everything was shot down in 1939-1945 and again in 1956...) the replacement of the population was therefore a necessary step that had to be done. Would you have told the Czechoslovak Hungarians that you are not interested, you can go wherever you want? Or do you say to Czechoslovakia that it's okay if you want to deport everyone, then we'll give you those few tens of thousands of Slovaks?

Quant à la Slovaquie vous avez vous même évoqué le pourquoi du comment cette partie à été offerte non légitimement à la Slovaquie, notamment la ville de kosice...etc... Nous pourrions également débattre sur le comportement des dirigeants Ukrainiens envers les populations autochtones presentes depuis des siècles dans l'ouest transcarpartie. Bref le problème aujourd'hui ce n'est pas de redessiné les frontières une nouvelle fois... Mais de traité dignement et avec respect les ethnies magyares. J'entends par là de stopper les politiques discriminatoires de certains dirigeants qui essaient de falsifié l'histoire le passé des hongrois et de faire disparaitre la langue et la culture des magyars vivant désormais dans leur nouvelle frontière. Petite précision par rapport aux citoyennetés et la « récupération politique » : les hongrois d’outre-frontières ont le droit à la citoyenneté hongroise depuis la première moitié des années 2010, ce qui n’a pas manqué à causer des tensions avec des pays voisins comme la Slovaquie ou l’Ukraine. Pour la vaste majorité aujourd’hui, ces hongrois vivant dans les pays voisins ont la binationalité hongroise-pays de résidence.
Le "compromis" ou le dualisme austro-hongrois de 1867 n'est pas le fruit d'une révolte des Hongrois (celle-ci eu lieu en 1848 et fut écrasée par les autrichiens dans le sang)! Cette dualité (qui n'en était pas une à vrai dire car Vienne continuait à détenir les clés de l'économie ainsi que le maintient de son autorité sur l'armé) a été une volonté purement autrichienne. C'est suite au coûts et pertes astronomiques occasionnés par la guerre de successions pour le contrôle de la Prusse que les Habsburgs imaginairent cette porte de sortie. Car en effet, affaiblies après cette cuisante défaite, ils auraient été bien incapables de faire face à une révolte des peuples de l'Empire (surtout des Hongrois...les plus craints)! Ils créérent ce compromis avec l'adhésion de l'élite hongroise et allemande du pays; choix qui coûtera très chère à la nation en termes de territoires!

First of all, it's a rather correct video so thanks for that. In case of Hungary, even though you can, it's still misleading to start history from 200 years earlier, like it was just a freedom movement that established Hungary. It had been a country even long before. Austria may have been a mix of former countries but Hungary - not counting Croatia - had been a sovereign country a further 800 years back, too, times when the better half of Spain was still ruled by the Arabs. Hungary's borders did not change much during the centuries but every now and then it extended its power to Austria, Poland, Italy etc., and a few times it was also under occupation - likes of Tatars or Turks. The latter is when the Habsburgs came in but before that - unlike France, liberated from Germans in a few years - Hungarian had to suffer for 150(!) years under Turkish rule. Hundreds of villages were literally burned to the ground in the fights. Obviously, after this holocaust, so to speak, the Magyar population of course declined. Turkish occupation typically effected areas populated by Magyars (lowlands). The country was re-populated with Germans, Serbs, Romanians etc. Now we're there where this video started. Marriage with Austria was a given, it's not that Hungarians had any other choise. At least they did something, rebelled, as opposed to the Czechs, who once also had a great and proud kingdom, didn't do jack shit for a good 300 years. Treaty of Trianon took place in 1920. Hungary, now demobilized, was occupied more than a year before that, from several directions at the same time. By the winners? No. I mean, how can Slovaks or Czechs be the winners when they were also part of Austria-Hungary? The biggest weapon providers were the Czechs, the foreign minister of Austria-Hungary was Czech in 1917. But Czechs ended up not only liberated from Austria but also having power over 3 million Germans (not to mention 2 million Slovaks and 1 million Hungarians as a bonus). It's interesting therefore to compare two old kingdoms, Czech and Hungarian. Both were great once and both were incorporated into Austria. In Czechia, there were no Turkish occupation, no massacre for 200 years, and finally no independence gained in 1867. Yet it could keep hitorical borders even though it meant only 65% of the population was Czech. Meanwhile Hungary lost two thirds of its territory and not only that but its own people. As for Romania, just one detail: 3(!) million Romanians (again, never in war with Hungary, they were independent at the beginning of WW1, later even allies with Germany) were awarded more(!) land from Hungary than 10 million Hungarians themselves. Lastly, Orban doesn't give a shit about lost territories. Quote just one claim from him from the last 15 years (he's been PM since 2010).

In most of Transylvania were Romanian majority, but for example in the cities close to todays Hungarian border, that he mentioned in the video, were the Romanians in minority in the early 20th century, and also in Székelyföld (but it's another case, it's separated and far from the Hungarian populated lands). Le résultat de Trianon 70 ans après c'est aussi les guerres en Yougoslavie puis sa disparition (à quel prix) car mettre des peuples ensembles de façon artificielle est rarement positif. Dans chaque pays ou il y a une minorité hongroise il y a des persecutions. En Ukraine ìls leurs est interdit de parler hongrois. Orbàn a été élu 4 x et pss Comme Macron à 51% ! Si Orbàn veut réduire les libertés alors que fait la France, l'Allemagne ils sont aux ordres de la commission européenne. Il y a aussi une minorité hongroise en Ukraine, dans la région de Transcarpathie. Il est probable que l'enlargissement de leur autonomie serait être une exigence hongroise pour l'accession de l'Ukraine à l'UE.
Il l'a bien mentionnée. Apparemment il n'y a pas vraiment de problème, ils peuvent enseigner en Hongrois. Transcarpathie a été tchechoslovaque aussi, les hongrois n'ont pas un droit exclusiv de l'autonomie dans ce region. Slovak here. Fun fact is Hungarians are still dreaming about their country how it was before WW1. They think all of Slovakia belongs to them. The regions that ended up to be part of former Czechoslovakia were mostly inhabited by both Slovaks and Hungrians, so Hungary as a losing power just lost that territory, there were many Slovaks living there anyway. Overall I think that how Hungarians still cry for something that happened over 100 years ago just sets their country back. They don’t think how to make their country better, they just dream about their famous past. Similar to Russia. And to be honest Hungary was one of the most backwards European kingdoms anyway, everything positive aways had to come from the West. So thank you France, Germany and England.

(Toto je fašistický zákon, pretože diskriminuje na základe rasy a to v demokratickom systéme nerobíme). Beneš však trval na odvrátení pozornosti 250 000 pôvodných Maďarov. Páči sa ti to? Pretože Parížska mierová zmluva z roku 1946 zastavila nútené deportácie Slovákov, keďže boli založené na rase. Takto ho vyrušilo 100 000 Maďarov z domu, z jeho domu s 20 kg balíkom. Páčilo sa vám toto? Myslíte si, že únos maďarských kultúrnych statkov bol vhodný: hrady, zámky, pamiatky, ktoré sú maďarské? Žiaľ, Benešove dekréty nie sú zrušené ani dnes. súhlasíte s týmto? It was the Italians and mostly the French who, after WWI, wanted to destroy their enemy by making Hungary small and week and to satisfy the demands of the neighbouring countries in order to win them as allies, supporters and protectors from the Soviets. Aforementioned Antant countries only considered their own interest. The interest of the nearly thousand year old Hungary was ignored completely by them. I wonder if the French were frustrated or not if a “peace treaty” like the one that was forced on Hungary by France (Antant) in 1920 had been forced on them, and if they had lost most of their territories plus a lot of their citizens had ended up living under oppression in the neighbouring countries.

As we learned in history class French politicians (Georges Clemenceau) has a major role that every third Hungarian got outside of the border. They needed a strong ally in the back of Germany, that's why Romania got not only Transylvania but areas, where Hungarians were the majority as well. And that's the reason why many Hungarians don't like so much the French politicians.
Hungarians were the majority in a few cities, but NOT in the surrounding country side. The reason for this was that prior to WW1 they were practicing ethnic discrimination throughout their empire and wouldn't allow citizens that weren't of Magyar (or German) ethnicity to live in cities; they did more or less the same thing in Slovakia. None of the border counties had a Hungarian majority in the 1930 census, and not only that but they were outnumbered more than 2:1 by Romanians. The only counties with a Hungarian majority were those in the center of Romania, separated from Hungary proper by the mountains and several hundreds of kilometers, populated by the Szekely.

But it was first and foremost an act of historical justice. It's similar to how nowadays we in the EU (most of us, at any rate) support Ukraine in their struggle against Russia: yes, it also furthers our interest, but first and foremost it is a just fight for self determination. I also reject how "all of the deciding countries had a large colonial empire" - no, the United States didn't, definitely not a large colonial empire, and the principle of self determination originated with President Wilson. And President Wilson had a very important word in those peace talks. In fact, what stopped us from actually having defensible natural borders with Hungary in WW1 was the (rightful) reluctance of Western partners to allow the transfer of territory with majority Hungarian population up to the river Tisza. So I am sorry, but I reject this explanation, it's disingenuous.
Do you have any sources on Hungarians literally not allowing minorities in cities? Because those cities still had minor Romanian/Slovak/etc. populations and some cities were more others were less Hungarian. I'd say it had more to do with Hungarians moving to those cities and intergration/magyarization being more effective there (better job opportunities as a Hungarian speaker, Hungarian identification more common for middle class people since Hungarian was the more prestigious language and culture at the time). The Romanians would have liked to reach as far as the Tisza, but this would have been an aberration that the Western powers would not have agreed to. Not a single Romanian lived in that area! And as for the alleged Hungarian oppression, that is also a reason for the successor states to take over the territories that were wrongfully ceded to them. It was the Hungarians who perished in the battles against the Turks, not the nationalities. No, they weren't. Hungarians were not the majority even in their own Kingdom of Hungary (part of Austria-Hungary) in 1910. Right after WW1, the Hungarian population of Transylvania+Szatmar+Partium+Banat was 26% . And for as long as we have written documents originated in Transylvania (since the 13th century) Hungarians were never the majority in the region.
Wrong. Including the censuses made by Hungarians or Austrians say the opposite, Romanians have always been the majority in Transylvania. (and ever since its conquest by the Hungarians who arrived from Asia).

Juste une remarque sur la dernière réflexion au sujet du premier ministre Victor Orban. Hi there, I am a road engineer and I learnt about the past of the road network in Hungary. Before 1920 (Trianon) between main roads toward the Capitol there were several roads which were West-East directional and connected the radiál roads. BUt these roads get to another countries. In this way to travel across in Hungary nowadays is not so easy, especially with train. For example from Békés county to Zala county you have to go through Budapest where the distance and the price is bigger not to mention the increased travel time. If you want to do this by car you can go through the Danube in three bridge (one at the Capitol on the ring, one at Dunaföldvár and one at Baja.

One cannot judge Hungarian historical lands by what was given to them to rule in some era of Habsburg monarchy. That is false premise. Hungarian ruled some part of Croatia historically but they were never ever for a single moment anything close to a majority in any part of Croatia historically. Actually they were occupiers in Croatia and not an inch of Croatian territory is historically Hungarian.

This doesn't really solve the problem because open borders don't change sovereignty. For example, the Hungarian majority Szekely land is still in Romania, doesn't even have an autonomous status, let alone independence, and has no legal way to get it without approval of the Romanian people. Alsatian people in France, despite having full open borders with Germany, speak the least German and Alsatian out of their whole history. To solve the sovereignty disputes, you'll have to abandon the idea of nation states and rethink sovereignty entirely. For example allowing more autonomy or even independence anywhere after a fair referendum and negotiations from all sides.

Ce n'est pas en 1867 que les "hongrois se rebellent" mais en 1848. La guerre d'indépendance a durée 19 ans, dont 10 ans de répression russe (1849 à 1859) à la demande des autrichiens. C'est seulement en 1867 que les autrichiens décident d'accorder le statut de monarchie à la Hongrie. La population de la Hongrie n'est pas de 9.5M de personnes mais 8.6M. Les résultats du recensement effectué en 2022 ont été publié en septembre 2023. Les hongrois de l'extérieur qu'ils soient en Roumanie, Ukraine ou Slovaquie ne sont pas "des citoyens roumains ou des citoyens ukrainiens", ils sont en majorité bi nationaux. Depuis 2010 et l'arrivée de V.Orban au gouvernement, les hongrois de l'extérieur se sont vu attribuer la nationalité hongroise et le passeport hongrois. Ils votent aux élections hongroises.

Comme d'habitude et comme en France les régions ont souvent des noms ridicules, comme en Hongrie la "Région Centrope", pour "centre de l'Europe".
Victor Orban n'éloigne pas la Hongrie de la démocratie, c'est même le contraire et c'est ça qui l'éloigne de l'UE. En vérité c'est un bon dirigeant qui n'a pour seul intérêt celui de son peuple. Un politique comme lui on aimerait en voir plus souvent chez nous
Orban aime son pays. Orban veut préserver intactes les traditions millénaires. Imaginez s’il avait permis à tous les migrants du Moyen-Orient de s’installer en Hongrie en 2015. La population de la Hongrie est minuscule. Le flux incessant de migrants aux cultures très différentes aurait dilué le patrimoine hongrois. Dans quelques années, l’arabe serait devenu une langue officielle. L'Islam serait devenu une religion dominante. Désolé, gens naïfs de l’Occident et surtout des États-Unis sans instruction, Orban veille sur la Hongrie et son peuple. Si vous ne l'aimez pas, c'est dommage. Le peuple hongrois n'est pas uni par l'héritage génétique, mais par l'acceptation et le respect du droit du pays à survivre, à conserver sa langue, ses coutumes et ses principales valeurs. De nombreux migrants ne seraient pas d'accord avec cela, d'où le point de vue du peuple hongrois sur les dangers d'une immigration sans entrave.
Au moins en Hongrie,les référendums existent encore... Comment appelle t-on un pays comme la France qui ne consulte pas son peuple lors de prise de décisions importantes😂

Just a few inaccuracies: The name Hungary comes from Huns who lived in Pannonia before Magyars. Huns were destroyed in wars with Roman Empire. The Pannonian plains ends west of Bihor Mountains, not Carpathians ones. The tallest is Bihor Peak 1801m. So, Carpathians could had not been the natural border in your view. In Oradea and Satu Mare were large Jew communities, not Magyar. Later they emigrated in America. Many Romanians emigrated in America too. Saying "Magyar population in Oradea and Satu Mare decreased" is wrong. Paradoxically, in Romania there are Romanian ethnics who do not speak Romanian. They live in Magyar regions of Carpathian. So much about assimilation. In Voivodina and Potoc valley there are a lot of Romanians too. This does not mean Voivodina is more Magyar than Serbian. You do not mention of Hungary Romanian ethnics at all. For instance, General George Pomuț was born in 1828 in the town of Gyula, Hungary. Magyars claim that Transilvania was empty land waiting for Magyars to take after they come from Asia. Can anybody believe such a thing? Does anybody have an example of uninhabited land? Transilvania is a beautiful and fertil land. It could never ever be without inhabitants. Please visit Transilvania. You will see right away that it looks saxon not Magyar. But Germans never claimed there were not romanians in Transilvania. De facto language of Transilvania was Romanian. Germans spoke to Magyars in Romanian. Read for yourself Transylvanian saxon writings. UDMR the Magyar party barely makes 5% for parliament. That is because more than half of Moldavia is in Ukraine and Moldavia Republic. Moreover, 3.5 million Romanian emigrated all over the place. Otherwise UDMR won't be eligible for parliament.

Note: Today magyars are mostly assimilated local population, after the entering of the old magyars in what is today Hungarian plain there was a process of assimilation of locals that started from center to periphery and was more effective in low lands and very effective in urban areas were political administrative institusions were centered. So when you say in the XIX centrury this city was majority magyar that not means that the general area was magyar so will misslead the viewer.

Cependant, aujourd'hui les Hongrois forment un peuple homogène comme les Japonais. L'immigration y est très faible grâce à Victor Orban. Ils ont donc les moyens de revenir sur le devant de la scène. La vidéo aurait pu évoquer les grands scientifiques hongrois...
C'est une excellente ville pour ce qui aiment les grandes villes, D'ailleurs tout est accessible rapidement et bon marché,les monuments sont beaux, les rues beaucoup plus propre que Paris et c'est surtout moins cher Et moins dangereux que la plupart des villes de France. Le nationalisme est constitutif de la démocratie. Donc dire très très rapidement à la fin que Orban s'éloigne de la démocratie parce qu'il favorise et profite du nationalisme hongrois, c'est vraiment stupide ! Tout comme l'exercice du pouvoir par le peuple lui-même est censé être constitutif de celle-ci. Il est d'ailleurs prioritaire que le pouvoir soit exercé par le peuple que pour la nation. Parce qu'un pouvoir exercé par le peuple sera toujours pour la nation puisque la nation est indissociable de son peuple. Alors que, bien qu'il s'en donne l'image, l'exercice nationaliste de la politique par des acteurs plus ou moins honnêtes n'est pas nécessairement dans l'intérêt du peuple mais bien souvent un prétexte à l'application d'une politique raciste.

The change came with the Treaty of Trianon. It was a peace dictate because two thirds of the country's territory was taken away. It shrank from 273 thousand square kilometres to 93 thousand square kilometres. Only Romania was given more territory (102 thousand square kilometres) than Hungary had left. Moreover, we were completely blameless in the outbreak of the world war. The Austrian and German emperors alone decided to start the war. (Why we were blameless would require a longer historical discussion, which I will spare you. You have to believe that this is what happened).
A l'été 2020, je suis allé en vacances en Roumanie, à Oradea. J'ai profité d'une matinée pour aller visiter un village juste à côté qui s'appelle Paleu. Entrant dans une église, j'ai constaté que tout y était écrit en hongrois, y compris le texte sur un monument et le textes des bibles. Il y avait aussi des drapeaux hongrois. Et les noms des rues étaient en hongrois. C'est donc une situation particulière pour un Français. Le hongrois n'est pas langue officielle en Roumanie. Il n'y a donc aucune raison qu'elle soit si présente. Et encore moins qu'il y ait des drapeaux hongrois. S'il y avait des drapeaux allemands, italiens ou espagnols dans les zones frontalières françaises, cela nous paraîtrait étrange et les autorités interviendraient sans doute. Pendant ma promenade, une dame, sans doute intriguée de me voir tourner autour de l'église, est sortie de chez elle. J'ai essayé d'engager la conversation avec elle. En cinq langues (roumain, français, allemand, italien et, perdu pour perdu, en anglais). Elle n'en comprenait aucune (pas même le roumain, langue de son pays). Elle ne parlait que hongrois.

Le Traité de Trianon (4 juin 1920) règle les accords de paix entre le royaume de Hongrie et les Alliés. Il signifie surtout pour la Hongrie l’amputation des 2/3 de son territoire en le réduisant à un noyau de 93 000 km². Des lambeaux sont perdus de tous les côtés au profit des Tchèques, des Slovaques, des Croates, des Serbes, des Roumains, etc. La question des nationalités apparait insoluble de façon totalement satisfaisante, et de fait ce sont de nombreux Magyars qui se retrouvent incorporés dans de nouveaux ensembles nationaux.

Unfortunately, I am afraid that there are some small but important details which may be missing.
So please let me take some remarks:
1. For nowadays the Hungarian rate in the population of neighbors has dramatically decreased since WW I, due to the executions, chasing, and aggressive assimilation attempts.
For instance in Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu or in Czechoslovakia under Edvard Beneš and his decrees and the Hlinka Guard and so on.
2. After WW II most of the Hungarian schools were closed and the people had to use a foreign language as their mother tongue.
Even though Hungary signed a contract with Ukraine in which
Hungary stated that it does not have and will not have any territorial claims against Ukraine and sees Ukraine as the most important economical ally, Ukraine still regulates the usage of the Hungarian language.
3. The neighbors of Hungary created their electoral districts in such a way that the Hungarians living in the same block ( in their country) would always be in the minority.
Therefore, 2.5 million Hungarians lost their political representation.
There would be some other minor missing details, but these were the most important for me.
I hope I didn't offend you by writing these, but these were the most important missing pieces for me!

Don't forget that the reason the Hungarians were in those lands in the first place is because they did the same things (and worse!) to the native slavs, romanians and pushed them out to expand their own Hunagrian empire- Also look at the region of Békescsaba, once almost entirely Slovak up to the 2nd world war, which is now for the same reasons more Hungarian

Békéscsaba (or Békešská Čaba) is a Hungarian city. The name of the city doesn't even mean anything in Slovak. See also Prince Csaba in Hungarian history. The city was depopulated several times. First during the Turkish subjugation, and later in the 17th century when the Serbs burned it. After that, we satteled Slovaks, Germans and Hungarians there.
What you might be thinking of is population exchange between Czechoslovakia and Hungary...well, that's exactly what I bet on. After 1920, according to the Benes decrees, Hungarians could not own anything in Slovakia. A lot of people left Czechoslovakia for Hungary on their own (or under duress). In Hungary, for another 50 years or so, people lived in houses made of wagons, because there were not enough buildings (let's say it didn't help that everything was shot down in 1939-1945 and again in 1956...) the replacement of the population was therefore a necessary step that had to be done. Would you have told the Czechoslovak Hungarians that you are not interested, you can go wherever you want? Or do you say to Czechoslovakia that it's okay if you want to deport everyone, then we'll give you those few tens of thousands of Slovaks?

Nous pourrions également débattre sur le comportement des dirigeants Ukrainiens envers les populations autochtones presentes depuis des siècles dans l'ouest transcarpartie.
Bref le problème aujourd'hui ce n'est pas de redessiné les frontières une nouvelle fois...
Mais de traité dignement et avec respect les ethnies magyares.
J'entends par là de stopper les politiques discriminatoires de certains dirigeants qui essaient de falsifié l'histoire le passé des hongrois et de faire disparaitre la langue et la culture des magyars vivant désormais dans leur nouvelle frontière.
En espérant la paix et le respect de l'ensemble des peuples dans ces régions et dans le monde entier bien sûr.
Oui c'est toujours une question d'argent et de profit et malheureusement c'est toujours les populations qui subissent

Vous insultez un groupe ethnique (Roumain) de manière non provoquée. On estime que nous nous appelons ainsi (Roumains) depuis le 5-7ème siècle. C'était lorsque l'Empire romain accorda la citoyenneté romaine, avec tous les droits inclus, à tous les habitants de la Dacie. Depuis le 13ème siècle, nous avons plusieurs documents qui confirment que nous nous appelons Roumains, même si certains peuples voisins nous appellent Valaques.

Petite précision par rapport aux citoyennetés et la « récupération politique » : les hongrois d’outre-frontières ont le droit à la citoyenneté hongroise depuis la première moitié des années 2010, ce qui n’a pas manqué à causer des tensions avec des pays voisins comme la Slovaquie ou l’Ukraine. Pour la vaste majorité aujourd’hui, ces hongrois vivant dans les pays voisins ont la binationalité hongroise-pays de résidence.
Le "compromis" ou le dualisme austro-hongrois de 1867 n'est pas le fruit d'une révolte des Hongrois (celle-ci eu lieu en 1848 et fut écrasée par les autrichiens dans le sang)! Cette dualité (qui n'en était pas une à vrai dire car Vienne continuait à détenir les clés de l'économie ainsi que le maintient de son autorité sur l'armé) a été une volonté purement autrichienne. C'est suite au coûts et pertes astronomiques occasionnés par la guerre de successions pour le contrôle de la Prusse que les Habsburgs imaginairent cette porte de sortie. Car en effet, affaiblies après cette cuisante défaite, ils auraient été bien incapables de faire face à une révolte des peuples de l'Empire (surtout des Hongrois...les plus craints)! Ils créérent ce compromis avec l'adhésion de l'élite hongroise et allemande du pays; choix qui coûtera très chère à la nation en termes de territoires!

Hungarian statehood is 1100 years old. The problem for the Hungarians is not that Transylvania is now part of Romania, but that the great powers have decided the lives of people living in other countries to their liking! The "peace treaty" changed the 1100-year-old borders of the Hungarian kingdom. Why? Did Hungary do something bad? Did it attack other countries? It can't be because Hungary was not a sovereign state, it belonged to a monarchy, which it never wanted. What do we see in the leaders of countries beyond our borders? They are always afraid that fate will turn the other way and that they will have to give back their territories. Hungary's loss of territory in the south and east is mainly due to the expansion of the Ottoman Empire. By the 18th century, Transylvania already had several inhabitants of Romanian (Wallachian and Moldavian) nationality. And of course cheap labour for the Hungarian landlords...
The other thing is that I think Viktor Orbán has no need for populist, radical, chauvinistic politics, because children open their history books and start reading. Then the question arises, what happened? Hungary is one of the most democratic countries in the world! Why? Because the people are consulted on all important issues and they decide. Like the migrant issue or the relationship between children and LGBTQ people! Where is this in France? In Hungary can you say anything on the street? Is this true for France, Germany or England? More people are in prison for expressing their opinion in England than in Russia...

You should say some sentences about the historical Hungary as well, before the times of Austrian-Hungarian Empire. 1848-49 were the years of the revolution and freedom war, 1867 was the year of the compromise with Austria, by the way.

First of all, it's a rather correct video so thanks for that.
In case of Hungary, even though you can, it's still misleading to start history from 200 years earlier, like it was just a freedom movement that established Hungary. It had been a country even long before. Austria may have been a mix of former countries but Hungary - not counting Croatia - had been a sovereign country a further 800 years back, too, times when the better half of Spain was still ruled by the Arabs.
Hungary's borders did not change much during the centuries but every now and then it extended its power to Austria, Poland, Italy etc., and a few times it was also under occupation - likes of Tatars or Turks. The latter is when the Habsburgs came in but before that - unlike France, liberated from Germans in a few years - Hungarian had to suffer for 150(!) years under Turkish rule. Hundreds of villages were literally burned to the ground in the fights.
Obviously, after this holocaust, so to speak, the Magyar population of course declined. Turkish occupation typically effected areas populated by Magyars (lowlands). The country was re-populated with Germans, Serbs, Romanians etc.
Now we're there where this video started. Marriage with Austria was a given, it's not that Hungarians had any other choise. At least they did something, rebelled, as opposed to the Czechs, who once also had a great and proud kingdom, didn't do jack shit for a good 300 years. Treaty of Trianon took place in 1920. Hungary, now demobilized, was occupied more than a year before that, from several directions at the same time. By the winners? No. I mean, how can Slovaks or Czechs be the winners when they were also part of Austria-Hungary? The biggest weapon providers were the Czechs, the foreign minister of Austria-Hungary was Czech in 1917. But Czechs ended up not only liberated from Austria but also having power over 3 million Germans (not to mention 2 million Slovaks and 1 million Hungarians as a bonus).
It's interesting therefore to compare two old kingdoms, Czech and Hungarian. Both were great once and both were incorporated into Austria. In Czechia, there were no Turkish occupation, no massacre for 200 years, and finally no independence gained in 1867. Yet it could keep hitorical borders even though it meant only 65% of the population was Czech. Meanwhile Hungary lost two thirds of its territory and not only that but its own people.
As for Romania, just one detail: 3(!) million Romanians (again, never in war with Hungary, they were independent at the beginning of WW1, later even allies with Germany) were awarded more(!) land from Hungary than 10 million Hungarians themselves.
Lastly, Orban doesn't give a shit about lost territories. Quote just one claim from him from the last 15 years (he's been PM since 2010).

Slovak here. Fun fact is Hungarians are still dreaming about their country how it was before WW1. They think all of Slovakia belongs to them. The regions that ended up to be part of former Czechoslovakia were mostly inhabited by both Slovaks and Hungrians, so Hungary as a losing power just lost that territory, there were many Slovaks living there anyway. Overall I think that how Hungarians still cry for something that happened over 100 years ago just sets their country back. They don’t think how to make their country better, they just dream about their famous past. Similar to Russia. And to be honest Hungary was one of the most backwards European kingdoms anyway, everything positive aways had to come from the West. So thank you France, Germany and England.

As we learned in history class French politicians (Georges Clemenceau) has a major role that every third Hungarian got outside of the border. They needed a strong ally in the back of Germany, that's why Romania got not only Transylvania but areas, where Hungarians were the majority as well.
And that's the reason why many Hungarians don't like so much the French politicians.
Hungarians were the majority in a few cities, but NOT in the surrounding country side. The reason for this was that prior to WW1 they were practicing ethnic discrimination throughout their empire and wouldn't allow citizens that weren't of Magyar (or German) ethnicity to live in cities; they did more or less the same thing in Slovakia. None of the border counties had a Hungarian majority in the 1930 census, and not only that but they were outnumbered more than 2:1 by Romanians. The only counties with a Hungarian majority were those in the center of Romania, separated from Hungary proper by the mountains and several hundreds of kilometers, populated by the Szekely.

But it was first and foremost an act of historical justice. I also reject how "all of the deciding countries had a large colonial empire" - no, the United States didn't, definitely not a large colonial empire, and the principle of self determination originated with President Wilson. And President Wilson had a very important word in those peace talks. In fact, what stopped us from actually having defensible natural borders with Hungary in WW1 was the (rightful) reluctance of Western partners to allow the transfer of territory with majority Hungarian population up to the river Tisza.
So I am sorry, but I reject this explanation, it's disingenuous.
Do you have any sources on Hungarians literally not allowing minorities in cities? Because those cities still had minor Romanian/Slovak/etc. populations and some cities were more others were less Hungarian. I'd say it had more to do with Hungarians moving to those cities and intergration/magyarization being more effective there (better job opportunities as a Hungarian speaker, Hungarian identification more common for middle class people since Hungarian was the more prestigious language and culture at the time). In 1900 Cluj was 14% Romanian and Alba Iulia 42% Romanian for instance. I wouldn't call that not allowing Romanians into cities although magyarization was heavily at play there@@costinhalaicu2746

The Romanians would have liked to reach as far as the Tisza, but this would have been an aberration that the Western powers would not have agreed to. Not a single Romanian lived in that area! Even today there are only 25,000 of them living in Hungary, but they have their own school!
And as for the alleged Hungarian oppression, that is also a reason for the successor states to take over the territories that were wrongfully ceded to them.
It was the Hungarians who perished in the battles against the Turks, not the nationalities. During the 1848/49 war of independence and revolution, the Romanians, together with the Habsburgs, exterminated the Hungarians in Transylvania, and the Serbs did the same in the South. That is why they became the majority in the territories that were later seceded.
Before the First World War, Hungary was a liberal state, the like of which was a rarity in Europe. During the 50 years of dualism (1867-1918), 500,000 Romanians flowed from the Regat to Transylvania without any obstacles.
Did President Wilson's principles of self-determination apply to everyone but the Hungarians? 3 million Hungarians came under foreign rule and were persecuted in every way, and the country's territory was reduced to a third of its former size.

I am a road engineer and I learnt about the past of the road network in Hungary. Before 1920 (Trianon) between main roads toward the Capitol there were several roads which were West-East directional and connected the radiál roads. BUt these roads get to another countries. In this way to travel across in Hungary nowadays is not so easy, especially with train. For example from Békés county to Zala county you have to go through Budapest where the distance and the price is bigger not to mention the increased travel time. If you want to do this by car you can go through the Danube in three bridge (one at the Capitol on the ring, one at Dunaföldvár and one at Baja.

This doesn't really solve the problem because open borders don't change sovereignty. For example, the Hungarian majority Szekely land is still in Romania, doesn't even have an autonomous status, let alone independence, and has no legal way to get it without approval of the Romanian people. Alsatian people in France, despite having full open borders with Germany, speak the least German and Alsatian out of their whole history. To solve the sovereignty disputes, you'll have to abandon the idea of nation states and rethink sovereignty entirely. For example allowing more autonomy or even independence anywhere after a fair referendum and negotiations from all sides.

C'est seulement en 1867 que les autrichiens décident d'accorder le statut de monarchie à la Hongrie. La population de la Hongrie n'est pas de 9.5M de personnes mais 8.6M. Les résultats du recensement effectué en 2022 ont été publié en septembre 2023. Les hongrois de l'extérieur qu'ils soient en Roumanie, Ukraine ou Slovaquie ne sont pas "des citoyens roumains ou des citoyens ukrainiens", ils sont en majorité bi nationaux. Depuis 2010 et l'arrivée de V.Orban au gouvernement, les hongrois de l'extérieur se sont vu attribuer la nationalité hongroise et le passeport hongrois. Ils votent aux élections hongroises.

Orban aime son pays. Orban veut préserver intactes les traditions millénaires. Imaginez s’il avait permis à tous les migrants du Moyen-Orient de s’installer en Hongrie en 2015. La population de la Hongrie est minuscule. Le flux incessant de migrants aux cultures très différentes aurait dilué le patrimoine hongrois. Dans quelques années, l’arabe serait devenu une langue officielle. L'Islam serait devenu une religion dominante.

Just a few inaccuracies: The name Hungary comes from Huns who lived in Pannonia before Magyars. Huns were destroyed in wars with Roman Empire. The Pannonian plains ends west of Bihor Mountains, not Carpathians ones. The tallest is Bihor Peak 1801m. So, Carpathians could had not been the natural border in your view. In Oradea and Satu Mare were large Jew communities, not Magyar. Later they emigrated in America. Many Romanians emigrated in America too. Saying "Magyar population in Oradea and Satu Mare decreased" is wrong. Paradoxically, in Romania there are Romanian ethnics who do not speak Romanian. They live in Magyar regions of Carpathian. So much about assimilation. In Voivodina and Potoc valley there are a lot of Romanians too. This does not mean Voivodina is more Magyar than Serbian. You do not mention of Hungary Romanian ethnics at all. For instance, General George Pomuț was born in 1828 in the town of Gyula, Hungary. Magyars claim that Transilvania was empty land waiting for Magyars to take after they come from Asia. Can anybody believe such a thing? Does anybody have an example of uninhabited land? Transilvania is a beautiful and fertil land. It could never ever be without inhabitants. Please visit Transilvania. You will see right away that it looks saxon not Magyar. Cependant, aujourd'hui les Hongrois forment un peuple homogène comme les Japonais. L'immigration y est très faible grâce à Victor Orban. Ils ont donc les moyens de revenir sur le devant de la scène. La vidéo aurait pu évoquer les grands scientifiques hongrois...

C'est une excellente ville pour ce qui aiment les grandes villes,
D'ailleurs tout est accessible rapidement et bon marché,les monuments sont beaux, les rues beaucoup plus propre que Paris et c'est surtout moins cher
Et moins dangereux que la plupart des villes de France.
Il ne faut pas se fier aux mauvaises réputations et publicité que dressent nos médias français etc...

Le nationalisme est constitutif de la démocratie. Donc dire très très rapidement à la fin que Orban s'éloigne de la démocratie parce qu'il favorise et profite du nationalisme hongrois, c'est vraiment stupide ! Tout comme l'exercice du pouvoir par le peuple lui-même est censé être constitutif de celle-ci. Il est d'ailleurs prioritaire que le pouvoir soit exercé par le peuple que pour la nation. Parce qu'un pouvoir exercé par le peuple sera toujours pour la nation puisque la nation est indissociable de son peuple. Alors que, bien qu'il s'en donne l'image, l'exercice nationaliste de la politique par des acteurs plus ou moins honnêtes n'est pas nécessairement dans l'intérêt du peuple mais bien souvent un prétexte à l'application d'une politique raciste.

The change came with the Treaty of Trianon.
It was a peace dictate because two thirds of the country's territory was taken away. It shrank from 273 thousand square kilometres to 93 thousand square kilometres. Only Romania was given more territory (102 thousand square kilometres) than Hungary had left.
Moreover, we were completely blameless in the outbreak of the world war. The Austrian and German emperors alone decided to start the war. (Why we were blameless would require a longer historical discussion, which I will spare you. You have to believe that this is what happened).

A l'été 2020, je suis allé en vacances en Roumanie, à Oradea.
J'ai profité d'une matinée pour aller visiter un village juste à côté qui s'appelle Paleu. Entrant dans une église, j'ai constaté que tout y était écrit en hongrois, y compris le texte sur un monument et le textes des bibles. Il y avait aussi des drapeaux hongrois. Et les noms des rues étaient en hongrois. C'est donc une situation particulière pour un Français. Le hongrois n'est pas langue officielle en Roumanie. Il n'y a donc aucune raison qu'elle soit si présente. Et encore moins qu'il y ait des drapeaux hongrois. S'il y avait des drapeaux allemands, italiens ou espagnols dans les zones frontalières françaises, cela nous paraîtrait étrange et les autorités interviendraient sans doute.
Pendant ma promenade, une dame, sans doute intriguée de me voir tourner autour de l'église, est sortie de chez elle. J'ai essayé d'engager la conversation avec elle. En cinq langues (roumain, français, allemand, italien et, perdu pour perdu, en anglais). Elle n'en comprenait aucune (pas même le roumain, langue de son pays). Elle ne parlait que hongrois.
