Love my fall garden. Cilantro does much better in the fall. Much slower to bolt. Everything tastes better. Some veggies taste better after the first frost, especially kale and the other brassicas. We wouldn't have chow chow if it weren't for green fall tomatoes.
Root the suckers that you prune off of your mature tomato plants. They produce much faster than those from seed.

Fall and Winter Garden is my favorite! Because I love leafy greens! I can't grow them it's too hot here in the summer.
To go outside in the nice cool weather and pick some kale and different kinds of salad greens makes me very happy 😊.

I already have a "fall garden" for when my legs cramp up and I collapse after contorting myself into a myriad of yoga positions while pulling weeds and trying not to step on my plants. Raised beds; maybe next year I'll finally get around to making them.

I just added two 40 gallon plastic containers for fall gardening. Did not want to buy the redwood and remove lawn and re-route irrigation . So I painted these planters green and just set them on my concrete patio where I can hand water. Added garden soil and compost and today I planted transplants of Habanero, Spinach, Onion and Radish. I have 12 more radish seedlings set out to start for next months plantings. Want to get some other lettuce too. Enjoying your videos Scott.

I've been potting up the suckers I remove from my indeterminate beefsteak tomato plants. Once I move them up to five gallon buckets, I'll put them in my little greenhouse for an extended Fall harvest. If I get fruit that doesn't ripen by the first frost, well, I'll be eating a lot of fried green tomatoes in October and November. LOL. Probably pickling some as well. The plants are not only free, but would normally just get thrown out into the compost pile, so why not? Some are over a foot tall already. :-D

I have a very short growing season, about 173 days and 80-95 without frost. It’s good to know I can plant quick to mature, frost-tolerant crops in July-August and harvest in late September, early October.

Hi Scott, thanks for reminding all of us that now is the time to plan, and for some of the plants like broccoli, because it takes quite a while to produce heads, actually plant right now. In your next video, you might want to include that one option for starting some of these plants is to go back to the grow room and grow under lights. The issue is, right now, it's simply too hot for some of these crops to germinate well and grow, particularly the greens like spinach and lettuce, as well as brassicas. But if you start them under lights in a cooler area, say your basement, and grow them for a month or 6 weeks, by early September in many areas it will have cooled down a bit. Also, if you start brassicas now they will be decimated by cabbage worms. But by early to mid September, that is less of a problem, as you mention. Just some thoughts. Thanks again!

We had excellent germination of brassicas in the past few weeks, we overplanted in garden beds next to a fence to the west, and everything grew nicely together, shading the ground. Now we just have to keep trimming the overlaps, but we just call it harvesting~

Here in NZ global warming is lengthening the summer growing season and making it a more stressful time for the plants with an intensification of drought conditions and higher temperatures. This makes an Autumn garden even more practical. So thanks for the reminder and, as usual, great information. This year I will plant in Spring with the autumn garden with all its possibilities in mind. I wont try to cram everything in at once and do more succession planting. A year or so ago I planted a couple of tomato plants in December, several months after the others went in during Spring. I had masses of tomatoes all through summer and Autumn. I had to cover them with mesh though because of the psyllid being very present in the heat.

  • @conservativemovement

Don't forget a Spring garden! Here in Massachusetts lots of things will overwinter like lettuce and spinach and be growing in February and March, and you can put many different seeds in the ground and get them to germinate in February or March also! Not to mention the perennials like dandelion and chive and violet and other things that are ready to eat very very early in the year. 🌱

I was watching people my age 61, plant potatoes in totes and bins. So I told my hubby, let's try that. Better than all that digging in the ground. So we used totes, bins, tires what ever we had around here. And planted 27 bins, etc. So far we have harvested 11 of them and have gotten 60 pounds of really nice potatoes. So far 22 pounds of gold rush. 6 pounds of red. 7 pounds of white. And 25 pounds of Yukons. Not bad. And dumping them in a wheelbarrow is alot easier than all that digging and bending. We are replanting them again after putting some chicken poo compost back in the totes. So we will have a fall harvest too. I plan on canning most of them.
