thanks for the shoutout Edwin! Very well put together video with a lot of great information and talking points. I hope you and your family have a Happy New Year!
Good to see you here and thanks for the kind words. I have been really enjoying your content since I discovered the Arcade1up Cabinets! You definitely deserved the shout out.
Great video! These units are amazing in my opinion. Gives me the feeling of being in the arcades back in the old days and the feeling of nostalgia is quite adrenaline pumping. I think they are worth every penny.
I agree with everything you said. Having fewer choices is actually a plus since you don't get choice paralysis. Plus, these are classic games. I got the Pac Man one and am really hoping to get the Galaga one too. So much nostalgia. I used to play Galaga during lunch hour in high school at a local pizza joint.
If you hold the joystick itself while putting the ball onto them, they will far less likely come undone (the joystick itself spins). Loc-Tite still a good idea. I just hand-tightened mine on my Galaga cabinet, holding the joystick, no loosening yet. Also there's a ROM patch for Galaga, where the Galaxian game will freeze at certain points, plus use the ROM set with the correct colors.
georgef551 it would be a pain but if you take the control panel apart most of these ball top joysticks have a spot for a flathead so you can tighten them
I'm building a game room and instead of individual risers I may build a platform for the 3-4 machines I plan on having. So far it's looking like MK, SF, Pacman, and either Galaga or Rampage if I buy four.
the key to the bonus levels in galaga is that you have to stay in the center for most of them, there are a few you have to move, but double fighter and center mass and you are good.
That's right the experience with the machines is very different than playing with an emulator on a PC. $300 is a fair price from everything being made for you already. At it's core though, these machines are STILL using emulation, but playing with the cabinet and joysticks is a very unique and superior experience overall.
I didn't notice any differences from the original Pac Man... perhaps either it's not happening or it always did it? Not sure. I'll try to pay closer attention next time.
My only real complaint about these things is the screen shimmering due to incorrect scaling which in later revisions they could interpolate the horizontal axis to fix, and maybe the SF2 cabinet having ball tops instead of bat sticks but that's gonna be personal preference lastly maybe the microswitches? I mean if they are using zippy which I assume they are, I mean that works but using cherrys that would scream quality in my book. If they are using quick disconnects on the switches then that's probably an easy as can be mod to do. That and the bat top mod would probably be easy to do also.
Very nice video! I could not find an email in your about section. I was wondering if I could send you some joystick bat top replacements for you to review? Thanks.

Absolutely agree. I have 3 modded og Xbox's with 20k games on each so i have most everything. I purchased the Centipede A1Up cab because of the trackball vertical screen combo for the win imo. You can't get the experience anywhere else except the og 80's arcade cab that is imo too expensive and large/heavy and tough to work on for someone like myself who knows nothing about them. They have a trackball on a couple portable plug n play control decks like the tank stick but no where near the same experience imo. Good vid btw.
Nice review. I have a 12-1 1up cabinet. One disappointment is the high scores are not saved. Might be insignificant for some, but others feel saving high scores is part of the experience. Example friends come over and get high scores, they like seeing their score still there when they come back the next time... and man, oh man, the spinner knob is so bad. Tempest can't be played beyond the first very easy levels. Impossible to play level above level 16. If want to play Tempest, you'll need to replace the knob with a real spinner.
Edwin the Magic Engineer For sure man! Like you said, that’s the best for controls. I really want to play Cadash...I sunk lots of quarters into that lol 😹

cool review! Any info on the power consumption of a unit, if you left these turned on all day? Pretty cool looking to have them just running while you walk past in your house.
The power brick is pretty small, 12v 3A max... so a maximum of 36 Watts each... Although I deeply suspect they are running well below that since the bricks never get warm. I would guess it's 10 to 20 watts each.
Pretty sweet too bad about the gauntlet game, but they'll get it fixed. Did you ever play the old game called rampart or ramphart? That game was crazy. Another really cool game I remember at the local arcade when i was a kid was the 4 player X-Men arcade machine.

The included joysticks and buttons are trash anyways just mod whichever cabinet you can get the cheapest. I was able to get an asteroids cabinet for $199 and I made my own control panel with trackball, spinner and 2 4/8 way selectable mag stick plus joysticks from Ultimarc and it can now play thousands of games. You mention soldering on the USB to the arcade1up to access the menu but what you didn't mention is you gain access to the MAME emulator menu , that's right arcade1ups use the MAME emulator so there is no reason not to modify it to a full MAME cabinet and play all the games!!! Playing Emulator games is not wrong, profiteering off them is! Emulation is for sharing! 🙂
What exactly are your arcade1ups on in this video? Something like that would actually work well for me for the time being.
They are on some tall chairs that we have extra. If the chairs have the right specs it actually works pretty well.
Fyi, those risers only raise the cabinet 12"
