    INTRODUCTION
We live on the Earth. It has many beautiful and wonderful things. You see flowers, trees, mountains, clouds, plants, animals, cars and buses around you. Can you tell which one of these things are living and which are non-living?
    LIVING AND NON-LIVING THINGS
Human beings, animals and plants are all living things. Living things need food and they can move, grow, breath, feel changes and reproduce.
    Living Things Move
Living things move from one place to another in search of food and shelter.
Animals: Humans and animals use their legs for walking and running. Fish swim with the help of their fins. Birds and butterflies fly with the help of their wings.
Plants: Plants do not move from one place to another because they do not have to look for the food. Green plants make their own food. They show limited movements of their parts. The sunflower changes its direction according to the movement of sun. The leaves of the mimosa (touch-me-not) plant close when touched.
Non-living things like books, bottles and tables do not move on their own, until somebody moves them.
    Living Things Grow
All living things grow over a period of time.
Animals: A baby grows into an adult.
Plants: A seed grows into a tree.
Non-living things like balls and notebooks do not grow.
    Living Things Breathe
All living things need air to breathe.
Animals: Animals have different breathing organs. Humans and many animals breathe through their nose. Frogs can breathe through their skins also. Cockroaches, grasshoppers and butterflies have small air holes on their body for breathing.
Plants: Plants have small pores (stomata) on their leaves which help them in breathing.
    Non-living things do not breathe.
    Living Things Feel Changes
All living things can feel changes around them. For example, we can feel hot or cold weather.
Animals: Humans and animals have sense organs like eye (see), nose (smell), ears (hear), tongue (taste) and skin (touch) which help them to sense the changes around them. Some animals go into a long sleep in caves and burrows to protect themselves from winters.
Plants: Plants do not have sense organs, but they can feel, the touch-me-not plant curls up its leaves when we touch it. All plants grow towards light. A lotus flower opens at sunrise and closes a night.
Non-living things do not feel changes.
    Living Things Reproduce
All living things produce young ones of their own kind, so that life goes on. This process is called reproduction.
Animals: Humans and some animals like lions, cows and goat give birth to their babies. Fish, frogs and birds lay eggs.
Plants: Plants also reproduce. Most of the plants grow from seeds, but some plants can also be grown from roots, stems and leaves. For example, sugar cane, rose and rubber plants can be grown from plant parts.
    Non-living things do not reproduce.
    Living Things Need Food
All living beings need food to grow and stay healthy. Food also gives us energy to do work.
Animals: Humans and other animals get their food from plants and other animals.
Plants: Green plants make their own food in the presence of air, water and sunlight.
Non-living things do not need food.
