You Don't Need a Spike to Get into Your Dream College

  • Back when I was applying to schools, I read that I had to have a spike if I wanted to have a chance of getting accepted. Now that I'm in college, I'd say that you don't need to have a spike to get into your dream college. Speaking a bit from my own experience, well-rounded applicants can have just as good of a shot as their more spiky peers.

@Lenz Francois Btw I'm just a high school freshman, so I could be completely wrong with this. I don't think having two B's will be your downfall because grades are really just to get you into the game, but your personality is what lets you win. (that was mega cheesy mb) I doubt any college will reject you because you have two Bs as opposed to somebody else who has As instead. to my knowledge, it'll never really come down to comparing grades among applicants but rather the applicants themself--who they are and what they've done/can do. TLDR: grade's help, but if you have amazing qualifications, you won't be rejected because of your grades. Did that make any sense?

@Lenz Francois if I’m correct Stanford doesn’t look at your freshmen grades so your good

Like what the above comments said, having a few B's won't be the end of your application. I think this would hold especially true for the past few months given that things are not business as usual

I think that today what can make your application standout is the genuinity of your application ...your essays ,your activities ..if they speak about you and seem to be true then that I think can become your spike even if you are a well-rounded student .Btw amazing content ❤keep going

When you are neither well-rounded nor have a spike 💀

You have about two years of high school still! I didn't really feel like I had much direction until really the start of senior year, so don't worry if you are still figuring things out!

When I started watching your video, I honestly thought it was bs to think like that (sorry!), but when I finished watching it, I understood where you were coming from -- it makes sense (somewhat). I'm just a random high-schooler who has little to no knowledge on the college application process. On the many videos I've watched on people's stats, it always seems that people have great GPAs, have done many internships, have many, many awards, and have a spike.
However, sometimes I come across applicants with no identifiable spike, but with a great essay and personal narrative, and wonder why the college accepted them, seeing as their application is so basic.
It makes a little bit more sense now.
Based on what I've seen, it seems hard to believe that colleges these days would pick a student that hasn't shown any remarkable achievements because of how competitive it is.
Side Note: Do you have any advice for a junior in high school? (specifically in relation to extracurriculars, and what to do with the most chaotic year of hs?)

thank you for the honest review!
I would say that if you're still a junior, you can definitely still work to develop yourself. It really depends on your interests, but there area. lot of activities that you can still get involved with. If you do a google search for activities, competitions, etc. related to your interests, you may be able to get involved!
Junior year was definitely a hard year, but it helped that I set clear goals for myself that I could pursue to help me keep on track

@@lourdricksroom Thanks for the advice! I really appreciate it! I definitely have many interests and goals, but not activities or goals to back them up. I’ll try to seek out many new opportunities and set more concrete goals now 😤!

i personally believe that there are a lot less well-rounded applicants who are accepted, but those who are must have showed great potential and personality in their activities, essays, and support. While nearly every school is looking for the master-class students, i think there are times when the admissions officer finds the applicants who aren’t quite set on the field they want to pursue, but have shown great achievement and potential in every aspect of their application.

@@kennedylareign I think that's certainly true. truly well-rounded applicants without a clear leaning are rarer, but they do exist. thank you for sharing!
