T-Handle Lock Fix

  • Hi I’m Mike Johnson with Radco Truck Accessory Center.
Sometimes we get asked how you can free up seized T-Handles or how to determine if you need to replace them.
    Here’s a couple tips:
Some tools you’re going to need is a penetrating lubricant. We’ve got PB Blaster here that works really well for freeing up T-Handles. You can use WD-40, but something we’ve noticed though is that once it’s cleaned out the handle, you’ll want to use some form of dielectric grease because it tends to attract more dirt particles in there after using it. We’ve got a channel lock or pliers, a couple sets of keys, and a towel, and then a little bit of patience.
So, a lot of these T-Handles are going to be seized up so much that the little cover door that’s on the handle actually won’t go in, so you won’t even be able to input the key into the handle. So, in this situation what you’ll want to do is start hitting it with the penetrating lubricant. And then just let it soak in for a little bit. So, after letting the lubricant sit in for a little bit you, you’ll want to take the key and try to push it in or tap it in place. It’s still going to be a little froze up, but now that we’ve got it open we can get more lubricant on the inside. You’re going to want to slowly do quick little jerks to try and break it loose.
So, this one wasn’t too hard to do. Just got it broke loose. And once it’s all cleaned up, you’re going to want to put some dialectic grease on the inside of the lock. It will keep it from corroding. On top of that, some things you can do to keep this from happening is, is getting a rubber lock sock, which is just a cover that goes over the existing handle. Once you’re done with this, you should be good to go. If you have any questions stop in at any one of our eight retail stores or give me a call at 888-637-9638. Thanks a lot!

Wow. Ty so much for the knowledge. I lost my keys to my truck topper about a year ago. The truck wasn’t a daily driver so I let it sit mostly, driving it every so often to the store to keep things semi moving. Recently I lost my job, and my work truck. Now I’m back to my old trusty Ford F-150. My truck topper y handles were a must for locking the top, problem was I lost my keys as stated above. I commute with a friend and need certain tools but not others. Those stay in my truck. I recently found an online company to replace the keys (2006 topper). I received them tonight and tried them. The lock was incredibly tight. It worked, but not well. This video saved me. Ty.

I have a 700 series leer tonneau cover, and the lock cylinder spun in place. I was able to unlock and open the latch, but not lock it. This video totally worked. Just hit it with some penetrating fluid, and worked the key a bit with some pliers. Good as new now! Thanks for the video!

My key is such a pain in the ass. Not that it won't move, but its like the machining is off just a hair. It moves easily once you hit that perfect spot with the key.

That's a lot of work and hassle. One would think that would be made better than that.
Glad I found this, tho. I've been fighting mine for months. It would open, I would take the hey out, 1 hour later the key won't go in.

Now my key turns fine but it won't lock in either position. Is it broken inside? Is it possible to take the lockset out?

mine goes in fine but won't turn more than 1/4 turn, feels like it's sticking but won't go further no matter how much pb blaster I use.

Look for the number on the lock and order a key with that number from Amazon or Ebay. In this video it's j327 for example.

I've come to the conclusion these t-handle latches are a real piece of $#it. I put lubricant in it and left it for a few days.....several months ago, and it worked great then. Put a baggie over it to keep it clean. Well guess what. Again I can't get the key in.
