  • When it come to picking the right foil for you, there is a lot to consider. In this video, we go over the difference between low aspect and high aspect foils. One isn't necessarily better than the other, but they actually complement each other really well. Think of it like an air plane and the difference between a fighter jet and a glider.
    Hopefully this information helps you pick the right hydrofoil for your sport, whether it's kiteboarding, wing foiling, surf foiling, etc...

    Most information I have read or watched advocate for lower aspect (but big) foils for learning wing foiling, because of the low stall speed and early lifting, and say to reserve the high aspect foils for when you have more experience.

    high aspect means more speed, not more lift. Lift is the wing-area. Sorry mate, but you got some important things wrong in this video. Low aspect usually associated with more lift and less speed, though not always, depends on the design. Also, you are showing two wings of highly different wing-span, which is even more confusing your viewers.

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  Год назад +1

      Stephane, Great question! I would say the tricky part with wing/kite is kite you don't need a lot of glide and lift on a foil as you have power with the kite. Wing is the opposite and you need lift and power unless its really windy! I think the 800Ha "your smaller" or 1000ha could be magic! The 1300 is great but will be more draggy but will work. Its tricky again! A fun kite foil is the 950, 1300 works for lighter winds but is a little draggy as it's a mid/low aspect wing. The HA 800, 1000 will be much faster and more what you are looking for on a wing. To have one foil for both you will sacrifice something if that makes sense!

    Newbie here.... The main thing I'd like to learn is wing foil, but the boat wake surfing/pumping looks fun too. if I start with a cheaper, used, large volume beginner board (like 130L) and then move to a nicer smaller board ( say 100L for example) can that one board be used for everything if I were to just swap out foils for different situations?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  2 месяца назад

      A 100L board will be a bit big to ride behind the boat or flat water pump, but it’s perfect for winging for sure 👌

    • @Bham67
      @Bham67 2 месяца назад

      @@DamienLeroyRUclips I did a poor job of framing my question. Let's say you have a 200 lb guy with intermediate foiling experience. Can he wing and flat water pump/wake thief on the same board, just by swapping out foils, or does he need two different boards?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  2 месяца назад +1

      @@Bham67 Well I would say you can use it but it will not be ideal for say a beach start as it will be so think to hold. If you prone foil it and get going on a wave, or say like you ask being on a boat wave for sure you can pump it on flat water once up on foil, it is just a larger board will work but smaller is nice and more fun as you get better. But to answer your question it can work but there is a trade off!

  • @Gilloup
    @Gilloup Год назад

    Hello Damien do you think a higher aspect allows riding more upwind than a lower aspect ? Maybe because the rider can push more on the high aspect foil wing because this wing is longer ? Maybe because the high aspect is faster and higher speed means more upwind ?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  Год назад +1

      Good question. I feel it all depends on the conditions and the foil wings, but there are a lot any wing, lets say a high aspect wing has a ton of camber in the wing which can have high lift but hits a wall of drag as well at a certain speed. Then you could have a lower aspect wing with less camber and it might be a little faster at a higher speed. I think in general a high aspect wing should be more efficient than a lower aspect wing but there is more to it than that. Great question. In vernal I would say higher aspect is usually better as its more efficient usually, more glide. Think glider airplane vs Biplane :)

    • @Gilloup
      @Gilloup Год назад

      @@DamienLeroyRUclips It seems we may head to a conclusion sounding like a high aspect with little camber, don't we ?

    • @DamienLeroyYouTube
      @DamienLeroyYouTube  Год назад

      @@Gilloup It comes down to the the individual and what they are looking for and their ability. Faster foil maybe harder for a beginner. So camber or higher lift at slower speeds is better. Also have to think about the riding location, is it windy or not? The individual will have little power or lots of power in the hand wing. Changes things. In general HA is good and a little camber or, a more lofty wing is better for most.
