- Ukiyo-e 浮世絵 "pictures of the floating world", is a genre of art that flourished in Japan from the 17th through 19th centuries. Its artists produced woodblock prints and paintings of such subjects as female beauties, kabuki actors and sumo wrestlers, scenes from history and folk tales, travel scenes and landscapes, flora and fauna.
Ukiyo-e was central to forming the West's perception of Japanese art in the late 19th century-especially the landscapes of Hokusai and Hiroshige.

I like this movie and it is so interesting.
I live in Japan but it's so difficult to see the process in which Ukiyoe浮世絵
is painted.
Maybe most of Japanese people never have an opportunity to see this
throughout their lives.
Explanation in the movie is so interesting too such as what kind of people join the work of art and how they restore pieces of Ukiyoe.

+Black Cat's Creation „Takashi At Ota“ Thank you for the laudatory comment. Ukiyoe is a great art form and has a long tradition. Unfortunately, there are fewer and fewer master of this craft. Hopefully there are people in East and West who appreciate this art in the future.
I have this print. He is making a re-issue of Station #15 - Kanbara from Hiroshige's 53 Stations of the Tokaido series. An unspecified engraver or carver (perhaps mentioned in the Japanese narration) produced new re-cut blocks from the original designs. Yoshida Toshi is printing from those re-cut blocks.
The nice thing about re-issues like this, when done well, you can see how the prints would have looked when first published back in Hiroshige's time. Unless you see a real collector's print at a museum collection, you won't find old originals that aren't stained, faded, torn, etc. I like the re-issues very much. And unlike art prints, they are done by hand as the originals back in the mid-1800s would have been done.

+AKNatura Danke sehr Andreas. Die Holzschnittkunst ist ein wichtiges kulturelles Erbe in Japan. Viele Bilder sind berühmt auch im Ausland, zum Beispiel " Unter der Welle im Meer vor Kanagawa", ist der Titel eines Farbholzschnitts des japanischen Künstlers Katsushika Hokusai. gruss , shiso

love this vedeo..congrats..! I have an old reprint 1947 apx of this print, KAMBARA by hiroshige, by han-ken publisher seal..never imagined it was ..so detailed to make it even is just tones of greys...a marvel..! and yes, there would be nice to have subtitles in english...

I use Mypaint with a Wacom tablet and an inkjet printer. I might have a go at block carving though.
Servus mein lieber zurück aus dem Kanarischen Outbrack und erstmal rein bei dir dachte ich mir mal heute. Ich hab ja nicht schlecht gestaunt, das ist ja mal auch richtig intressant. Das habe ich auch noch nicht so gesehen, geil. Man kann doch alt werden we ne Kuh man lernt doch immer noch was dazu, echt voll intressant das zu sehen. Danke für die Doku auch wenn ich kei Wort verstanden habe hat Spaß gemacht zu zuschauen. Nebenbei habe ich herrliche Aufnahmen aus Fuerte mitgebracht ein Leckerbissen aus der Natur der anderen Art und Weise mal. VLG Sven

Very good video of the Japanese woodblock printing process. It is unfortunate that the film contains no translation of the narrator's and artist's remarks and no depiction of the carving of the woodblocks from which the lovely print is made. An essay describing and explaining all this would enrich the value of the film significantly.
+John Pfeiffer Thanks for watching anyway. The documentary is to be a visual insight type. We can see the development process even without verbal explanations. The film in Japanese only. Maybe we make a new project in English in the future.

Is this Yoshida Toshi a grandson of THE Yoshida Toshi, the Shin Hanga artist? I don;t know if the film said so as I do not speak Japanese.

the rubbing tool is called a baren, it is used to pressure the paper onto the inked block
