  • Camping in the rain in a hot tent is a cozy adventure and I had the whole family with me on this one. We camped in the desert near Moab, Utah so we could visit Arches National Park. It was an early spring campout and the rain was intense! The storm carried on for almost 24 hours straight, but no one seemed to mind since we are warm and dry in the hot tent with the stove blazing. We enjoyed a delicious meal of Greek Chicken Pitas and even baked chocolate chip cookies in the Winnerwell Fastfold oven.
    Springbar loaned us one of their new Skyliner tents for this trip. The Springbar Skyliner is a handcrafted canvas tent made in Salt Lake City, Utah, USA. We really enjoyed it and I hope you do too!

    Great video. The stove could use screw in adjustable legs, and the tent would be better if you could tie back the flaps with something that doesn't require a bow to secure them. So far, hat is my favorite tent.

    I've been considering this tent. Springbar now makes a storm-fly for it.. which I suspect will completely eliminate that rippling and leaking in the roof. Good video.

    The tent comes with a template, the nomad large goes in the middle template hole, which is more like 2/3 the way up the stove jack if you didn't use template.

    I think I’d charge up the robo vacuum & let it fly if I had kids/dogs with me. I really wish there was a entry screen room to add that zipped up. Could keep shoes, wet clothes/coats during rain. Use mesh to sit out & not get buggy on warm nights.

      Springbar's 10x14 Stormfly is not compatible with their Skyliner. Either an aftermarket or DYI solution for a rainfly on the Skyliner. Bet, they'll get around to making one for the Skyliner eventually.

      That's awesome I hope you love the Skyliner as much as I do! I've never tried to orient the stove as you describe. I think it could work if you just turn it 90 degrees and leave the stove pipe going out as it does. You'd likely have to fold in the stove's drying rack on one side, but I think it could be done.

    With dogs and kids, Sweeping up sand is a never ending job. I like the extra canvas inner floor you placed down at the start of setting up this tent, does that come with the tent from the factory or is that something you brought. I am still concerned about potentially getting wet. I have a two week coming trip back in Oklahoma, it the first two weeks of November and it could be anything like this light rain for 3-5 days and or sleet or sunshine, you just never know, but I have seen it all over the past 40 years of camping, fishing and hunting Oklahoma. DO you know if you can spray that silicone tent dry on this canvas to keep up from leakiign and or would I have to hang a hammock type tarp above this tent to keep it dry, that takes some of the fun out of it, but nothing is worse that comoing back to camp wet from hunting all day in the rain to find your sleeping gear soaked and wet along with a wet dog who has mad a island of your clothes to lay on so he isn't getting wet from the water in the floor. I hope you can find the time to answer my question. Keep up the great videos. I am sure you are responsible for helping this company sell many of these tents. now the kicker will be the cheaper hot tent or this one.?
    Thanks again, looks like a fun family camping trip.

      @outdoorempirecom  9 месяцев назад

      It was a fun trip, Dale, thanks for the comment! And sorry for the late reply. But to answer your question, the canvas tarp I use did not come with the tent. But I do love it and use it all the time for all sorts of stuff, including as a floor inside the tent, or sometimes as a doormat outside the tent to keep dirt from being tracked inside as much. This one comes from a company called White Duck Outdoors. Here's an affiliate link if you want, amzn.to/497GclX. It definitely goes on every trip now. As far as the leaking potential goes, I don't think a new treatment of silicone spray will help at all with a brand new tent. The canvas is treated for that at the factory and the problem I had here was more related to the pooling of water on top which eventually seeped through the seams. Springbar reached out and told me they made a couple improvements since. I haven't had a problem since but I also haven't had persistent rain like that yet to really know. Springbar does make a Stormfly for their other tents which is a nice waterproof fly you can put over top of the tent as extra cover, but it's not sized for the Skyliner so perhaps they will release one soon. Best of luck on your upcoming trip!

    @millzee 11 месяцев назад +1

    I was wondering if there is a good way to brace or guy the flue pipe so it will not fall over in high wind? If it fell over with a hot fire going it would be terrible possibly flipping stove over. The support cable will not stop it from laying over in a high wind. Have you or any other owners of this tent had this concern or a solution? I thought of maybe rigging up a couple pieces of conduit with a large hose clamp maybe.

    • @outdoorempirecom
      @outdoorempirecom  10 месяцев назад +1

      There are some eyelets on the chimney cap where you could attach guy lines if you wished. Or you could even attach some cable below. I have been pretty impressed that even in 40mph winds that chimney stayed in place. The Winnerwell stoves aren't super lightweight so they don't move easily. But I'm sure in extreme conditions it's possible. My plan would be just to attach a little carabiner to either side of that top chimney cap and guy it out with some polycord and stakes up and down wind if possible.

    I just bought a Skyliner in Bison and it's been set up in my backyard for a few days getting ready for a trip this weekend. It's super roomy for my 2 girls and myself. The girls are in bunkbeds so we will have a nice central seating area. I did have some trouble folding it back up, I noticed you fold yours in half and half again and roll it up. Does it fit all the way back in the sack like that? I tried-folded mine and it stuck out a ton. I then quad folded it and it's super fat like a chipotle burrito, but I had to fight it to get in the sack.

    • @outdoorempirecom
      @outdoorempirecom  11 месяцев назад +1

      Ya, I can fit it back in the sack with lots of room to spare. It's all about the folds before you fold in half. I leave mine staked to the ground and pull the long sides inward, then the short sides, and make sure the awning and everything is laying real flat and spread out, not bunched up in the middle. Then remove stakes and fold long edges to the middle. Then fold in half one more time so it's folded in quarters and the bottom of the floor only touches itself, no floor on canvas. Roll it up, cinch it, and stick in in the bag.

    Ok I didn't see any guy lines attached to the top of your stove pipe so what's gonna keep it from spinning around on the other pipes

    • @outdoorempirecom
      @outdoorempirecom  10 месяцев назад

      There are some eye hooks where you can attach guy lines to this stove pipe. But I haven't needed it, even on this trip in gusts of 40mph+. It doesn't spin or anything, the pipe segments fit together very snugly. I think the bigger risk is that the whole chimney tips over in the wind, pivoting at the 45 degree angle where it exits the stove jack. But that hasn't been a problem for me either with these Winnerwell stoves.

    I’m confused. When you’re talking about having to make the roof more taut @22:19 a pole is moving up and down from the roof in the background but what’s strange about it, it looks like it’s coming directly from the tent below….if that makes sense.

I could go on about the softopper: access the front of the bed by opening a few snaps, stack cargo as high as the cab, fold up the back while driving and give the dogs a shady ride, remove the whole thing in about 1 minute...etc. Literally the best truck thing I've ever bought. They do have a fly that would likely help resolve this and I like the idea of the fly anyway, protecting it from leaves, bird bombs etc. Regarding the Winnerwell large, I notice the cleanout looks to be divided with a verticle piece..is this an issue cleaning out the stove? I hope to snag one of these soon. Moab is such a neat area and town. Love the Arches National Park.

      On the large Nomad that's actually not intended to be a cleanout. It's just the intake vent for airflow. To clean it out, I just open the whole door, pick it up, and dump the ash out at the end of my trip. Or clean it out with the door open.
