Subscribe: / stonedgremlinproductions Website: www.thecinemasn... Brad, Dave and Allison check out the 40th anniversary re-release of Smokey and the Bandit!
I live in Oxford Mississippi near oldness were most of this was shot. Last year they showed it on the big screen in the grove outside. Everybody was wearing Burt Reynolds mustaches and singing alone with the music. I also grew up with this movie. So that experience of seeing it on the big screen all these years later was so special
One thing you learn from Smokey and The Bandit is if you ride a motorcycle it's probably best to not piss of a truck driver. I always love that scene 😂😂😂
Don't forget that there is a Stephen Sondheim discussion in the midst of this movie. Who expected to hear a discussion about musical theater in a movie like this?
Nice to hear reactions to this film from young people who weren't around for its initial release, even if they later saw it, as I did, on cable TV and other outlets since then.
BTW, if Alison's interested, have her check out some of Reynolds' pre- and post-"Smokey" fare, like "Gator", which featured Jerry Reed as the villain, "Hooper", with Reynolds as a Hollywood stuntman, and others like them.
being BORN in Houston TEXAS Smokey and the Bandit is a movie you watch before your 10 years old and I Saw it at the movies today and it still FUNNY AS FUCK! GOOD SEE IT!
And I used to be stupid, when I watched this movie when I was younger I didn't know what the trucker was doing, I thought Bandit had all the beer in the trunk of his Trans Am.
Anyone, if $$ was no object, what tv/film vehicles would you have? Personally, I'd have- the Bandit's car, the General Lee, 1966 Batmobile, 80s KITT and new KITT, the Winchesters' car from Supernatural, the BSG 1980 cycles and the Megaforce film cycles.
11:21 Ironically, this movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. I personally think that it was deserving, but opinions are opinions. :)
I didn't see S&B until 2010, and growing up, the only CB movie I saw was Convoy. Didn't mean I didn't love it any less as an adult as I might've as a kid. "You guys couldn't close an umbrella!"
Fun fact: The elephant in Smokey and The Bandit 2 was the same elephant they used in Operation Dumbo Drop and he/she turns 50 this year. (The elephant from SATB 2 is also still alive and is in her 60's.) (PS: Anyone notice that this is also one of many better organized crime-movies of the 1970's, because it IS an organized crime movie basically) The car chases and light-hearted feel reminds me of Blues Brothers.
Kegs are illegal in Utah. But in Evanston Wyoming, which is only an hour past the state line. They're readily available for purchase. If your caught transporting one into Utah it's a bootlegging charge.
I just saw this for the first time too! I caught a showing in the theater last night and I was surprised at how good it was. I have zero nostalgia for this movie and I laughed my head off :)
Eastbound an' down Loaded up an' truckin' We're gonna do what they say can't be done We got a long way ta go An' a short time ta get there I'm eastbound, just watch ol' Bandit run!
Yay! Brallidave! You can't get more people in a Midnight Screening. Too difficult to smash together the names. Brad needs to get some 1977 Coors and drink on Brad Tries.
Here in Finland we don't have midnight screenings and it sucks really. All our theaters close at about 10:30 pm so the last movies start at around 8-8:30 pm.
j s Yes who could forget the classic "Bandit: Bandit, Bandit" or as me and my friends call it; "Bandit 'colon' Bandit 'comma' Bandit." The made for tv movies even costar Leo from Charmed! It's a perfect storm!
I'd love to see Brad give a more accurate description of the sequels, since the climax of 2 (Cars vs. Trucks) wasn't nearly as bad, nor is a roller coaster even involved. And Jerry Reed was trying to steal Jackie Gleason's plastic fish and fuck him out of $250,000. I don't blame him for not remembering a damn thing about them though, not everyone is a masochist like me who gives all three movies equal attention
Cannonball Run was released in 1981. Elephants live an average of 60-70 years. Yuengling used to be not available west of Pennsylvania. Now it is. Hooray?
Smokey and the Bandit came out just at the right time, people were getting tired of the heavy dark movies that had been coming out thanks to most of the control was in the filmmakers hand instead of the studios. That of course changed when movies like Jaws and Star Wars came out. And of course Heaven's Gate crashed and burned.
There's tons of breweries and vineyards in the Midwest that put "For sale in [state of origin] only" all over their product--I don't know why. Sure as hell didn't stop some of the stores I went to...
Much like Brad, I grew up on this little gem. Both my parents and I seperately own this on VHS, my brother got the Special DVD; and when I came across the main title on a Country compilation, I bought the CD, just because of that one song. Also, Alyson, are you doing a Tamara here? Still glad to see you enjoyed it, because it is really an all-around fun movie.
I would give damn near anything to see the original version of Smokey and the Bandit 3 which was Smokey is the Bandit with Jackie Gleason in duel roles as Buford T. Justice and Smokey. But apparently test audience found it confusing so they reshot the Bandit storyline with Jerry Reed but still damn I really want to see that original cut even if it's awful which it probably is it will probably be hilarious.
Smokey means Cop or Police... Buford T. Justice has ALWAYS been smokey... Bandit LITERALLY points to Buford behind them at one point and calls him "Smokey" to Frog...
I have a feeling test audiences weren't so much confused by CB handles... moreso they were confused for the same reason I was: Why the fuck is Jackie Gleason playing the Bandit in the first place?
It's not a car chase, but the car crash in Replica may be the most ineptly-filmed car-related action ever filmed. It even made the Rifftrax guys lose it for a solid minute.
Brad, you should make a Smokey and the Bandit Rip off month - this is right up your alley Hell, I think there are so many of them, you could make a whole summer of Smokey ripoffs:) Cannonball Run (1) was made in 1980, around the same time as Smokey 2. Hell, they had the Bandit Trans Am as one of the cars in the race and one of the runners wearing the Bandit Jacket, also one of the Police cars (a blue one with Patrolwoman) had the same emergency lights display as the Sheriff's Car in Smokey 2, and they used some of the 1980 Le Mans that had air conditioner problems in both films.
You guys didn't touch on the best part of Cannonball Run - Jack Elam being the MOST HILARIOUS GUY EVER! And the third one (Speed Zone) is all SCTV people, with John Candy as the star. Pretty good. Better than the second for sure.
I want to see a 40th anniversary Close Encounters screening. Are they planning on screening Close Encounters does anyone know? Original theatrical cut would be preferable also.
The only thing about watching this movie now as opposed to watching it back when I was a kid is that now I look at the Trans Am the Bandit was driving and the first thing I think is "That thing's only got two hundred and twenty horsepower, there's no way in HELL he's smoking those cops. Because the cars he was dealing with all had near as makes no difference TWICE the horsepower output. Suspension of disbelief tossed RIGHT out the window. But who knows, maybe he spent some money under the hood and that rig was sporting a big block 455 rocket motor that was built to the hilt. Didn't SOUND like it, but who knows, right?
I know of at least one female elephant, who has lived to almost fifty, and she was doing fine, when I was told her age, so elephants live a good long while.
Cannonball 1 is 1981. Alyson makes it seem like shes never seen movies yet before despite being a reviewer? I love her and all but its baffiling how she couldnt have not seen this movie before or Any of Burts movies. Welcome to Cinema Alyson.
This film was fabulous in its unpolished way. However, it makes complete sense why Star Wars overtook this in both box office as well as overall legacy.
I watch 1 and 2 all the time, 3 is so cringey. Dom Deluise and Jerry Reed, Jackie Gleason are the unsung heroes of those films. Smokey and the Bandit was the godfather to the Dukes of Hazzard, I agree. Cannonball Run, another good one.
you know if you wanna see a bad car chase, rent MCQ and watch the firebird chase between him and a bread van, as THAT has some really bad dubbing to it from the Bullit chase, same thing with cleopatra jones sadly, like why everything had to sound the same back then I dont know lol
Yeah I can't agree with the dude on the right. My 1st time seeing this was only a few weeks ago and I laughed my ass off during most of the Jackie Gleason scenes, and even some scenes between those. If this movie were reviewed today it would still be favorable
I liked it too, but it was the late 70's, a different time. I was asking if you didn't like it how would you have made it differently, not how you can passively insult my comment.
I took down my comment, since I thought this was for our review for Suicide Squad. With my glasses off, the thumbnails for both videos look the same. We love Smokey and the Bandit. I put it as #1 on my Burt Reynolds list video.
Smokey and the Bandit was certainly the most fun to watch, but the best movie he made was Sharky's Machine. Anyway, I didn't know you guys were looking into the technical aspects of the movies like editing, special effects, etc...stuff I don't know anything about so do your thing.
The Movie Bandit , Smoky 4 with Reed as the Bandit and then the other one with Gleeson as the Bandit was horrible plus The part 5 Barely mentioned with no Franchise people in it was horrible and felt unrelated too.
except maybe my song knows what you do in the dark man that's a bad title! but I can see it.. help!I am being oppressed by the man! and getting busted HELP. LINE EM UP.. UP..UP! LIGHT EM UP... UP.. UP I AM ON FIRE! it could work.
Dusty Bragg there should be a festival of sorts for it, and get Renolds to show up before he passed away.
I have been a major fan of Smokey And The Bandit when it came out. The more I see it,the more I like it.
Since his name was mentioned: RIP Sir Roger Moore.
I love how much Brad loves Jerry Reed. I miss him too. He was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame this year.
🤠🎻🎶
One thing you learn from Smokey and The Bandit is if you ride a motorcycle it's probably best to not piss of a truck driver. I always love that scene 😂😂😂
The theme song gets me pumped. It's my eye of the tiger.
R.I.P. Roger Moore
second best bond beside connery
Mmm..Moore is ok, he as Bond got really cheesy toward the end of his run.
Bullitt has one of the greatest car chases ever!
Race with the devil is my favorite 70's car chase movie.
Just watched this in honor of Burt Reynolds (RIP).
Really good, funny movie. And Jackie Gleason is great in this, too.
Don't forget that there is a Stephen Sondheim discussion in the midst of this movie. Who expected to hear a discussion about musical theater in a movie like this?
When you tell somebody something, it depends on what part of the United States you're standing in as to just how dumb you are.
And Coors still lives up to its nickname, as far as I know, "Colorado Kool-Aid".
Nostalgia glasses are a big part of it. This movie was AMAZING when I was 4 years old.
Wait, you mean there was a time when Burt Reynolds _didn't_ have a mustache? I thought he was born with it.
whiterabbit75 he was, he's like the Chuck Norris of mustaches, he can will it to grow into himself and back again as needed.
Smoky and the Bandit is a documentary of life in the South. 😉
My favorite movie of all time!
being BORN in Houston TEXAS Smokey and the Bandit
is a movie you watch before your 10 years old and I Saw it at the movies today and it still FUNNY AS FUCK! GOOD SEE IT!
I saw the 45th anniversary two days ago. First time seeing the film so it was great to see it on the big screen.
The shadow is making Rick's hair look like Kid's from Kid n Play.
That line about the baby oil made me smile.
i'm so glad this uploaded cause i've been binge watching for the past few hours and i had ran out
The Trans Am Firebird needs to make a comeback, like the Beetle and the Camaro. Also, now I want to listen to some Jerry Reed.
I don’t like country music at all. But that song i do like.
I love this movie!!
Love this movie! It wasn't the 2nd highest grossing movie in 1977 (behind Star Wars) for no reason! It's too bad the sequels destroyed everything.
11:21 Ironically, this movie was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Film Editing. I personally think that it was deserving, but opinions are opinions. :)
Today they'd be running Oxy up from Florida like on Justified. It'd be a way darker movie...but shit, I would totally watch that version.
I didn't see S&B until 2010, and growing up, the only CB movie I saw was Convoy. Didn't mean I didn't love it any less as an adult as I might've as a kid.
"You guys couldn't close an umbrella!"
The original "Gone In 60 Seconds" had amazing car chases and felt like GTA
Really underrated car chase: We Own The Night
JasCotton so strange that bootlegging is still a thing in 2018.
Hmm, I may be doing some work near Evanston later this summer--
...I've said too much.
Went to see this in the theater when it was released. Seems like yesterday. God I feel old !
I just saw this for the first time too! I caught a showing in the theater last night and I was surprised at how good it was. I have zero nostalgia for this movie and I laughed my head off :)
Eastbound an' down
Loaded up an' truckin'
We're gonna do what they say can't be done
We got a long way ta go
An' a short time ta get there
I'm eastbound, just watch ol' Bandit run!
Hey, she's singing about us!
What? Pam, that's the theme song form Smokey and the Bandit!
Eastbound and down!
Greatest Beer Run ever.
The 70s truck movie trifecta:
Duel - Horror/Suspense
Convoy - Adventure/Ernest Borgnine
Smokey And The Bandit - Comedy
Yay! Brallidave!
You can't get more people in a Midnight Screening. Too difficult to smash together the names.
Brad needs to get some 1977 Coors and drink on Brad Tries.
That's a horrible stomach ache waiting to happen, 1977 Coors is unpasteurized
Here in Finland we don't have midnight screenings and it sucks really. All our theaters close at about 10:30 pm so the last movies start at around 8-8:30 pm.
None of these have been at midnight since 2012, really. They just kept the name.
Well now I want Brad to Snob the entire franchise (especially Part 3).
I want to see them do parts 4-7 aka the made for tv prequel movies.
j s Yes who could forget the classic "Bandit: Bandit, Bandit" or as me and my friends call it; "Bandit 'colon' Bandit 'comma' Bandit." The made for tv movies even costar Leo from Charmed!
The Ambulance Burt drives in Cannonball Run is based off of reality. A GMC Ambulance placed 3rd or 4th in one of three Cannonball races.
Cannonball Run was released in 1981. Elephants live an average of 60-70 years.
Yuengling used to be not available west of Pennsylvania. Now it is. Hooray?

Does that woman live under a rock? Who hasn’t seen Smokey and the bandit?
And now it's time for "Alison's NEVER seen"!
Seriously Alison; you've NEVER seen Smokey and the Bandit?!
I've only ever heard of it in passing, myself.
Misterprickly Tamara's never seen is cringe as hell though.
DCValentine
Seems like she drinks a pot of coffee before appearing on camera--that girl is hyper as hell.
People who say "cringe" are cringey.
I just saw it a couple months ago for a series of film reviews of 1977.
Grew up with Hal Needham movies. Still my favorite movie of all time.
couple other similar favorites of mine Dirty Mary Crazy Larry and Every Which Way but Loose
I like White Lightning and Gator a lot also. Both which came out before Smokey And The Bandet.
Somewhere Archer and Burt Reynolds are off making the sequel to Gator
this movie is the CITIZEN KANE of the latter part of the 20th century.
If you haven't seen it, check out Jerry's F-16 story. RIP Jerry!
One of the things that made Smokey and The Bandit great IMHO was that Jackie Gleason had no scripted lines, just let him be Jackie and vamp/improv.
Brad, what is your opinion of Vanishing Point 1971?
I would give damn near anything to see the original version of Smokey and the Bandit 3 which was Smokey is the Bandit with Jackie Gleason in duel roles as Buford T. Justice and Smokey. But apparently test audience found it confusing so they reshot the Bandit storyline with Jerry Reed but still damn I really want to see that original cut even if it's awful which it probably is it will probably be hilarious.

As bad as part 2 and part 3 were already, I couldn't be less interested. And the original is my favorite movie ever by a mile - see profile pic.
It's not a car chase, but the car crash in Replica may be the most ineptly-filmed car-related action ever filmed. It even made the Rifftrax guys lose it for a solid minute.
This is Brad Jones going East Bound and down load em up and trucking.
So _Smokey_ was America's response to Django? I smell a crossover!
Am I the only one who would watch the hell out of a Smokey and the Bandit/Mad Max Fury Road crossover?
Valdagast mmm, for the era, a Smokey and the Bandit/Dukes of Hazzard crossover.
Should've brought Sterling Archer with you guys. He would've had a bigger blast at it than all three of you combined!
Brad, you should make a Smokey and the Bandit Rip off month - this is right up your alley Hell, I think there are so many of them, you could make a whole summer of Smokey ripoffs:)
Cannonball Run (1) was made in 1980, around the same time as Smokey 2. Again, if possible, I think Sarah should go with you and Allison to Baywatch. What do you think?
You guys didn't touch on the best part of Cannonball Run - Jack Elam being the MOST HILARIOUS GUY EVER!
And the third one (Speed Zone) is all SCTV people, with John Candy as the star. Pretty good. Better than the second for sure.
Ned Beatty is so great, and if you ever need proof, watch that one scene in Network.
And after the cop catches you and goes up to the window, you say, "Bad Cop! No Donut!"
To quote a great man "Burt Fucking Reynolds!"
I have a man-crush on Burt Reynolds, because of this movie.
luuupaaa 😍
I want to see a 40th anniversary Close Encounters screening. Are they planning on screening Close Encounters does anyone know? Original theatrical cut would be preferable also.
Idea for a Brad Tries: A forty year old can of Coors.
The only thing about watching this movie now as opposed to watching it back when I was a kid is that now I look at the Trans Am the Bandit was driving and the first thing I think is "That thing's only got two hundred and twenty horsepower, there's no way in HELL he's smoking those cops. Suspension of disbelief tossed RIGHT out the window.
But who knows, maybe he spent some money under the hood and that rig was sporting a big block 455 rocket motor that was built to the hilt. Didn't SOUND like it, but who knows, right?
Bandit: And I'm gonna need a car, to run blocker for the truck... Speedy Car... Speedier than That...
I know of at least one female elephant, who has lived to almost fifty, and she was doing fine, when I was told her age, so elephants live a good long while.
I am waiting on what you guys will say about Baywatch.
you think 3 is bad, try watching 4-7.
In Cannonball run 2 Dom was Captain USA.
Cannonball 1 is 1981. Alyson makes it seem like shes never seen movies yet before despite being a reviewer? I love her and all but its baffiling how she couldnt have not seen this movie before or Any of Burts movies. Welcome to Cinema Alyson.
Every time he dares to throw a slur at the film, watch Brad squirm in his seat.
Well Son! Where's the Movie Reaction video!
Cannonball Run...R.I.P. Roger Moore. :(
smokey and the bandit 4?
I thought DUKES was based off this film......I found out it's based on a movie called THE MOONRUNNERS.
I didn't know that. haven't seen it in ages. thanks for that.
However, this film did encourage CBS to put more faith in Dukes.
so, really a combo of the two films then....
WTF guys?! Cannonball Run 2 is awesome!
Are you guys trying to say Gator wasn't Oscar worthy?
have you ever do a great and epic car chase wile trying to avoid the fuzz to fall out boy! it's not good music to get busted to.
This film was fabulous in its unpolished way. However, it makes complete sense why Star Wars overtook this in both box office as well as overall legacy.
and the last one
the clash I fought the law.
I watch 1 and 2 all the time, 3 is so cringey. Dom Deluise and Jerry Reed, Jackie Gleason are the unsung heroes of those films.
Smokey and the Bandit was the godfather to the Dukes of Hazzard, I agree.
Cannonball Run, another good one.
yes but Brad... Would you go to a ministers funeral dressed in feathers?
What's a redband trailer and a greenband trailer?
Redband is more raunchy and can curse. Greenband is more general audiences.
deep purple highway star
slayer south of heaven
body count cop killer that might make things worse but still a good song
golden earring radar love
you know if you wanna see a bad car chase, rent MCQ and watch the firebird chase between him and a bread van, as THAT has some really bad dubbing to it from the Bullit chase, same thing with cleopatra jones sadly, like why everything had to sound the same back then I dont know lol
Yeah I can't agree with the dude on the right. My 1st time seeing this was only a few weeks ago and I laughed my ass off during most of the Jackie Gleason scenes, and even some scenes between those.
If this movie were reviewed today it would still be favorable
So how would you guys would have made the movie if this one was so flawed?
You do realise she's thinking, 'Who the f**k is Ned Beatty?' don't you?
Well now that she’s seen Purple People Eater, she knows now. 😐
The Movie Bandit , Smoky 4 with Reed as the Bandit and then the other one with Gleeson as the Bandit was horrible plus The part 5 Barely mentioned with no Franchise people in it was horrible and felt unrelated too.
This week on Dave hates enjoyable classics.
Why is it a trend right now to make old TV shows into movies?
To capitalize on nostalgia would be my best guess.
Kassie Boyd I guess that's why nearly all of them suck. I say nearly because I haven't heard their verdict on this one yet.
It was always a trend. They are running out of TV shows from the 60's, 70's, 80's, now they are doing 90's.
What do you mean "now"?
They have been turning TV shows into movies for decades.
Steve Perrin I guess I only noticed it now.
except maybe my song knows what you do in the dark man that's a bad title! but I can see it.. help!I am being oppressed by the man! and getting busted HELP. LINE EM UP.. UP..UP! LIGHT EM UP... UP.. UP I AM ON FIRE! it could work.
best car chase is Blues Brothers... just saying.
