Hello Silver Stuff ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me.
Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band, performing here at Buenos Aires in 2012, together with Floor Jansen, the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of a wild Argentinian audience. At the time, Floor Jansen was in the band for just about 2 and a half months, joining Nightwish in the middle of a world tour, as a replacement.
About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners.
Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory):
" Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland.
Tuomas Holopainen, the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [The 1st Bassist of the band was Sami Vanska, he was with them until 2001. The 2nd one was Marco Hietala, as Bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least - we'll see what the future brings to us. Then very recently (May 2021) Jukka Koskinen became the 3nd Bassist of the band, for at least the Human :II: Nature tour] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen . Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition.
Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her.
There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). I hope this helps.

Following the success of Beste Zangers show, Floor performed a series of solo concerts in the Netherlands in early 2020 with songs from her entire career (After Forever, Revamp, Northward, Nightwish, Beste Zangers) following that the last and the largest concert, at AFAS Amsterdam, to be professionally recorded and broadcast online, with the support of a crowdfunding campaign. After several rescheduling, due to the restrictions imposed by the pandemic, the concert took place at the beginning of September 2021 in 3 consecutive days. Originally Floor was sent by Allfather Odhinn to Midgard to gather the souls of fallen warriors to Valhalla, but she
got distracted and joined a series of bands. However, Floor still gathers souls by her grace, beauty and the sheer power
of her vocals.
We give thanks for her at our Blots regularly and hope that Odhinn won't notice that she has never returned to Asgard.

@@myracrystalhalilion9790 I'm guessing you're one of the "Tarja only" fans. That's cool, to each their own. I'll admit, some of the more ballad-like songs such as "Sleeping Sun" and "Dead Boy's Poem" I actually prefer Tarja's versions of those songs over Floor's.

The singer's name is Floor Jansen (like "Johnson", but the J is pronounced like a Y. She's Dutch, though the rest of the band is Finnish). At the end, the crowd is chanting "Floor! Floor! Floor! Floor!". They are actually chanting the same thing at different points in the video.
You will no doubt see several comments telling you the Wacken Open Air 2013 version is better, but each has its attractions. The crowd here is smaller, but more enthusiastic. And the reactions of some of the band members (particularly Emppu, the guitarist, at the end) are more prominently featured.
This concert was two months (IIRC) after she joined the band. At Wacken, she'd been with the band for 10 months (again, IIRC), and her performance is much more confident. The crowd was much larger, and the festival was held outdoors (thus "Open Air"). If you just want to hear the song again, go ahead, give it a listen, but it might take several revisits to figure out which performance you prefer.
A great song beautifully sung by Floor Jansen after only two months with the band replacing previous singer mid tour who couldn't actually perform this song as written for more operatic first singer. This is why the crowd are so hyped as didn't expect this song and why they chant "Floor" at the end. It will be stated by many that it's worth at least listening to the version from Wacken 2013 when with the band ten months. 15 songs all sung to perfection.

Nightwish is an amazing rabbit hole to fall into! You just heard their current vocalist Floor Jansen (YAN-sen), along with keyboardist and composer Tuomas (TWO-oh-mas) Holopainen, guitarist Emppu (EM-pooh, only cut the "ooh" short) Vuorinen, drummer Jukka (YOU-ka) Nevalainen and bassist Marko Hietala. There is a sixth member of the band, multi-instrumentalist Troy Donockley, but he wasn't onstage for this particular song. At the time this clip was filmed in Buenos Aires, Floor had been with the band for approximately two months, having joined them mid-tour as a replacement for then-singer Anette Olzon. It might take a bit due to time zones and all, but keep watch for Gabriel Bardac to show up with the quick history of the band and a huge list of links. He'll be the first to tell you, don't feel obligated to follow it in any sort of order, it's just a massive number of suggestions made by lots of people who love Nightwish and want to share them with everyone who hasn't heard them before. (Also, using Gabriel's links can be particularly helpful when watching anything from the Wacken 2013 show, as some of the uploads floating around are significantly slower than they should be.) One thing I will say, is that 95% of the time, you want to watch live concert clips rather than videos - much like Iron Maiden, Nightwish is a band that shines in live performances.
Looking forward to seeing your journey - Nightwish has been around for 25 years and 9 studio albums. And hopefully will FINALLY get to tour this year, as the most recent album came out in April 2020 just as the world shut down. I've been sitting on my tickets for over a year now!

I am probably the same age as you, and have seen most of the old great ones from all over the world - from Jimi and up - but Nightwish with Floor is simply in another league.

You're right the way she sings here in that first part is not opera, I have heard classical / opera music coaches call this a "Modified light classical headvoice". Which is basically a version of a classical lyrical headvoice that Floor has developed herself based on what she learned in conservatory, and that works amazingly well in this song.
it is nice to see almost my clone (retired, white beard, long flowing hair0 pretty much brothers from other mothers. I too have discovered Nightwish in my golden years. I have been a musician since the fifth grade and still play and I am really got into Nightwish. They have it all and you will not be sorry for jumping head first down the NIGHTWISH RABBIT HOLE

I picked up on a few things you mentioned and want to react specifically to those, rather than on what you thought about this song. It was great to see you get Floor-ed.
Early on you mentioned Phantom of the Opera. Nightwish actually play the title song Phantom of the Opera as well. This was already recorded with their original singer Tarja Turunen. Floor, who you saw singing in this video, did a version of Phantom with Henk Poort, who was the actual phantom in the Dutch version of the musical for many years. You should definitely check out their duet from the Dutch tv show Beste zangers (Best singers). If this song didn't get you to Floor-gasm, that one certainly will.
Then you also mentioned that you never heard a metal band with female lead vocals before. While women are still outnumbered by men in the metal scene, it is however not something new. A band like Warlock, with female lead vocalist Doro Pesch, already scored gold records in the 1980s, and Doro is still rocking. Also Lita Ford has already been active from the 1970s. She also did a song together with Ozzy Osbourne. Nowadays there is plenty to pick from when it comes to female lead singers in metal, and even all female bands are on the rise. Other metal bands that have female lead vocalists, with different sounds than Nightwish that I can recommend are Sinergy (band no longer exists), and Arch Enemy (band originally had male vocalist, but switched to female lead singer Angela Gossow in 2000, and in 2014 to Alissa White-Gluz, who is still their lead singer.
As a special treat, if you haven't done it already, look into the band Jinjer, and then specifically the live session of their song Pisces. If you get to that, just sit down, start recording your reaction, buckle up and enjoy the ride. Don't do any preparation.

Floor Jansen is called the Valkyrie Goddess of Metal and Empathy. Floor Jansen is a soprano, with a range of more than 4 octaves (Eb2 to F6)
She can sing from classical to belting and raspy vocals like screaming and death growls. And she's also a voice coach and teacher to boot.
Floor Jansen was the singer of the Dutch metal band After Forever from 1997 to early 2009. From 1999 she studied at the Rockacademie in Tilburg with classmates Jacqueline Govaert and Danny Vera, where she graduated in 2003. In addition to her activities at After Forever, she gave singing lessons. She plays guitar, piano and flute. On May 5, 2010, she presented her new band ReVamp, which was disbanded in September 2016.
From 1 October 2012 Jansen replaced Anette Olzon as singer of Nightwish during the Imaginaerum World Tour. On October 9, 2013, it was announced that she would be the group's regular new front singer. In 2015, Nightwish released the album Endless Forms Most Beautiful with Jansen as lead singer. Nightwish's second studio album with Jansen as front singer, Human. :II: Nature., was released in April 2020.

As several have commented, please consider the Wacken 2013 recording. Also, this is one of the earliest renditions of the final ending and "That Note" that Floor suggested be added with the permission of the band. Many Nightwish fans still hold dear their memories of Tarja singing this same song. I have only heard the recording from the last time she was with the group. She has a wonderful operatic voice and great enthusiasm. The one thing that stood out is Tarja seems to drag a bit in her timing, as if following the music. In contrast, Floor is right on the note and the beat, and if anything, she is up front and leading. Floor also has a much richer ability in her voice to emote both an emotion and musicality for what she is singing at that moment. Nightwish is, by all standards, excellent. Excellent composer, Excellent musicians, excellent singing and excellent in presentation. They are best appreciated in love presentations.

Floor Jansen is widely regarded as the best female vocalist today. She can growl (Revamp, Disdain) she can sing full opera (o mia babbino caro), and any genre in between to perfection. She describes herself as "a vocal nerd". She did conservatorium, which is the Dutch music university (sing, obviously, flute and I believe guitar) and the rock academy both in the Netherlands and some years of musical singing I believe. As metal music is her love she was not very popular in her own country of the Netherlands until 2019 when she broke through in the TV show Beste Zangers 2019 where she sang a multitude of styles (also on YT, complete episodes with subtitles in English). She wants to continue with Nightwish, but also releases her first self composed (pop?) song at the end of March. It has been a long time since she composed music herself.

Great reaction to this awesome group. You wouldn't go far wrong reacting to the Wacken 2013 concert where this song was the 13th out of 15. In most peoples opinion the Wacken version is superior to this one, can it really get better than this....check it out you'll thank me later. Best of luck in this rabbit hole. I'm a fellow 'silverite' and have been here a few years now, it is extremely difficult to get out of.
While the Wacken 2013 version is generally accepted as 'The Floor Ghost Love Score', this version is where she began to cut her chops as Nightwish's new vocalist. She adapted GLS and made it her own, changing the end from Tarja's version (you should hear that as well, Tarja is another wonderful vocalist - I am partial to Floor, but both are equally talented.) You can see it when she ends, her smile, the look from Empu, all of it. She nailed it, and GLS became hers, in her style. Floor is indeed a rare find.

There are plenty of metal bands with female leads, Epica, Within Temptation, Delain, Lacuna Coil, Arch Enemy, The Gathering, just to name a few. Kamelot is another great band that plays symphonic/power metal, with a male lead. All worth checking out!

Floor (lead singer here) was on a Dutch singing show called Beste Zangers where she nails it singing with Henk Poort the original Dutch Phantom. There is also a Nightwish cover of the Phantom form the End of an Era concert with their first singer Tarja Turunen and the best Phantom, the bassist Marko Hietala. It's a very complex song with lots of tempo, key, style changes. This was one of Floor's earlier performances of the song. It is often said that the same song at Wacken 2013 is the greatest though. Have a listen to that!

Some fans say this version of GLS is the best one b/c of the producer's otherworldly mixing. I listened to the Wacken 2013 version and while it is assuredly a great one, this one is now my #1 GLS. Hey SS I laughed at your quip about the hand signs I think you made them right lol.
I'm not going to echo Gabe Bardac he's the man for Nightwish knowledge except to say that Floor Jansen is THE #1 Symphonic Metal singer in the genre today. The only lead singer that comes close to Floor in talent is Epica's Simone Simons, Floor's close friend. They duet together so check out their Stabat Mater Dolorosa and their other duet as well(Sancta Terra). They use full orchestras and choirs on both so more Symphonic than GLS.
BTW the fans were yelling Floor's name after the song ended. The Buenos Aries fans are the loudest and best fans next to the Wacken fans.

Funny you should say that, for Floor has played Christine to Henk Poort's phantom, in an amazing version of Phantom of the Opera. It was from a Dutch show, 'Beste Zangers', in which different artists performed the other artist's songs, or songs which had a particular meaning for them. It wasn't a competition, just talented singers, enjoying themselves. Personally, I prefer lyrics that can be understood, music that isn't measured with a seismograph and composition that tells a story.

I have my favorites, to be sure, but I can also appreciate bands that create good music. Even if it doesn't end up on my playlist.
At this moment I'm listening to a band called Evergrey. Male lead, clear vocals, lots of good guitar and HEAVY. Favorite track - THE GRAND COLLAPSE. Tomas Englund, the founder, does a duet with Floor Jansen on IN ORBIT.
