I am now 72. I heard this song maybe in the 1980's, but never heard anything else. Like you, I'm just discovering Rush in 2023. It wasn't the music that first captivated me, it was their interviews, their RNR HOF speech, and the 3 of them having dinner together, (all available on RUclips). Then I heard Limelight, YYZ and Spirit of Radio live and I couldn't believe what I was seeing and hearing from 3 guys. How I missed them for over 40 years, I don't know. But I also missed Thin Lizzy and Metallica, both of whom I've discovered in the last couple of years, too. Retirement has its benefits. Now, if my hearing will only last a few more years!
The Dinner video is great, it really shows who they are (were in Neils case-RIP). Just three silly goofballs who happened to be extremely gifted musicians. While I enjoy all their interviews, it's my favorite non-musical experience of the group.
You just got yourself into an extremely deep rabbit hole , be ready to expect the unexpected you can’t classify their music only to say this band is one of the greatest live show bands ever and it’s all about the music
Canadas prog rock legends . The drummer Neil Peart passed away awhile back . Bought a bottle of high end scotch and listened till drunk crying that day . Fram and Alberta boy , 57 year old , saw them 5 times , took my kidsn the last 2 times
My love affair started in 1980 with this band when I was just about 13 years old. 43 years later, and I still love them above any other band. RIP Neil.
Same goes for me too…when I was 13 and heard Tom Sawyer and The Camera Eye from their Moving Pictures album in the summer of 1980, I instantly became a fan and don’t regret it one bit…I used up at least 6 or 7 cassette tapes before the CD came into existence…✌️😎🎤
Same for me! I loved this whole era. OZZY, Triumph, Steely Dan and countless others. I remember the last day of elementary school walking home singing Pink Floyd "We Don't Need No Education" and "Schools Out" by Alice Cooper with all my friends. So glad to have grown up in this era!
Like that? Then start your RUSH rabbit hole dive with "Living in The Limelight", "Subdivisions", and "Freewill", just for starters. As always, RIP Neil.
I think they are technically considered ‘prog rock’, at least in the 70s & 80s. If you liked that I suggest (off the same album), Limelight. But just about anything off ‘Moving Pictures’ was great. Rush in their prime. For the record, the little hair I have left is getting pretty salt & pepper. I’m jealous because you actually have hair. Lucky you.
their music spans 4 decades so their music does change as you would expect from a progressive band . You will absolutely adore "Spirit of radio" from their January 1980 masterpiece album Permanent Waves . constantly played around the world even today and probably their greatest hit (Rush did not write songs for the radio as such). If Tom Sawyer has you hooked Spirit of radio will mean you will get reeled in and consumed in what will be the most epic music journey of your life. I am so jealous. My journey started with them in 1978 when I accidentally purchased their album a farewell to kings another brilliant album. You'll find you will end up running out of superlatives to critique the holy triumvirate as they are known to their cult following and the most decent humble likeable human beings to boot.
🙋🏿♀️ May I suggest 'The Spirit of Radio' next. 🤔 4 decades of music is hard to pin down to just 1 genre of Music. 😏 There are folks from the 70's who saw them open for Kiss with songs off their 1st Album who couldn't stand the later 80's Synth stuff. Folks from the 80's who adore this period of Synth Rush 😒 but don't go for their early stuff. Fans who can't stand Geddys voice but love their instrumentals (YYZ Live in Rio, La Villa Strangiato). Those that don't like radio friendly Rush but go for their long epic pieces (2112, Xanadu, Natural Science). And those that go for the Books 😆 literally! Cygnus Book 1: The Voyage & Books 2: Hemispheres. 😉 Oh and they have a few Reggae tinged songs. 🤗 So much to choose from! 🥰🐰
Rush is indescribable. There is hard rock, heavy metal, glam rock... then there is Rush. I was a teenager in the 1970s when they were becoming known. I wish I'd paid more attention to them back then.
Best rock band ever and the best live shows. Rush was what happened when a top ten all time bassist who was also the singer and keyboardist and a top ten all time lead guitarist were joined by the world's greatest rock drummer/percussionist who also wrote intelligent and thought provoking lyrics. These three guys were amazing right out of the box and only improved in the 40 plus years they stayed together, check out Working Man live in Cleveland when they were pushing 60 to see what I mean. Subbed for more Rush. 😊
Three very talented musicians. my recommendation next song by Rush Subdivisions studio version. I would call them Rock/Prog Rock After looking at what category of rock to put Rush in most people realize the only category they fit in is the one named Rush 👍
A lot of people will tell you that Rush is progressive rock but they are actually considered the fathers of progressive metal. Imagine if King Crimson and Led Zeppelin had a baby.
It's because the term metal became associated with a different harder sound throughout the years. If you came up in the 60's and 70's like I did and perhaps OP, then you remember. But as Metal evolved Rush no longer fit into that category, so they stopped trying to put them in one and changed it to Progressive Rock. Anything they couldn't categorize they put into Progressive Rock. But I always said that Rush shouldn't be put into a box at all. They are like no one else. They were Rush.
Welcome to the Rush rabbit hole. There are 40 years of amazing performances by these 3 virtuoso musicians. See you a little further down the hole. Check out more by Rush Limelight The Spirit of Radio Working Man YYZ Xanadu
Sept 30 1974 I am 16 in a rock band and I am teaching myself how to play keys, so I buy a ticket to see Billy Preston. I think it was like $8...a little high we thought.(my band mates) There were two other bands, we had never heard of them, opening for Billy. It was "stadium seating", we were front row stage right. I could reach out and touch the stage. So the lights finally go down and this blazing guitar riff starts...."Finding My Way"...Rush comes out and rocks the stadium. I was feet away from Alex most of the night since they were the first band and their equipment was in front of the next band to come out before Billy Preston. What a show. Rush made a lot of new fans that night. The other band? Well this 8 foot fire breathing demon looking bass player was in front of me for their show....haha
The song "Tom Sawyer" from the Rush "Moving Pictures" album was a radio smash in 1981 and you can still hear it on all rock stations today. As were most every song on that album.
Welcome to the music of Rush…✌️ their music is an experience in lyrical transformation, talent driven ideas, and fan appreciation…their history is worth looking into…thanks for the reaction/commentary feedback.👍
Welcome to the rabbit hole that is rush it is deep and full of wonder!Greetings from YYZ 🇨🇦Neil's solo at Frankfurt is a must ,also YYZ live in Rio !!!
Rush is one heck of a rabbit hole. And there is no typical Rush. they constantly change there styles, ask 10 Rush fans what there favorite 5 song are and you will always get different answers
I'm sure among the 533 likes someone has told you they are a great Rock Band Trio From Toronto. In there many years together their was only 1 line up change. Very early in the bands life (not sure if it was before their first album or not, but Geddy Lee stepped in as the Bass player, Keyboardist and lead singer. The Drummer Neil Peart (RIP) is considered one of the greatest rock band drummers ever (1 or 2), He also wrote most if not all the bands lyrics. He was know for multiple time and key changes in a song. Sometimes as many as 12. They drew crowds in the 10's of thousands in their 50 yrs performance career. Even though there were inducted into the Rock and Roll of fame, they never had a song break into the top 80 of the Billboard Charts. Neil battling a terminal illness recorded about 10 minutes of drum tracks for a buddy and then collapsed and within 2 hr's later was dead. Definitely one of the leaders in Progressive Rock!
As gray as your beard is I cannot believe that you have never heard a Rush song. I'm 55 years old and I've been a fan of theirs since I was about 10 yrs old. 😂 Love the reaction though.
I've never really listened to rock bands. I liked Talking Heads in the 80's and REM in the 90's, but we were Pentecostal in my family, so I was not "allowed" to listen to rock, really. I have mostly only listened to pop music, Elton, Billly Joel, Barbra Streisand. I have not listened to many rock bands at ALL. Especially if they were "heavy" metal. My friends and family growing up called it all "devil music". Seriously.
Rush is a beautiful rabbit hole that you'll surely love. The deeper you dig the greater the rewards. There's a terrific documentary called "beyond the lighted stage" - you'll appreciate all of the Shakespeare allusions along the way, too. Maybe your next stop should be Limelight, if you've spent any time onstage.
There isn't really a 'typical' Rush song, unless you're going be era. They played for 40+ years and their style changed over time; sometimes it was heavier and grungier, sometimes there were more synthesizers, sometimes it was more Blues-y, and once they even attempted rap in a song. The commonality is that, with the exception of the first album, all three musicians stayed the same and their lyrics tend to be more on the intellectual side. They also have great chemistry and skill, yet remain humble and are more of an "everyman's band." Tom Sawyer was immensely popular and is a complicated song, but I don't think it was their best. But if you liked it, you'll probably like their early 80s albums. Definitely try out some of their other stuff. Be warned though -- the mid 80s songs were polarizing for fans. Some loved the heavier synths with guitars seemingly as an afterthought, and others hated it and just try to pretend it never happened. You might want to try Limelight from the same album (Moving Pictures), Subdivisions from their Signals album, or YYZ live in Rio. YYZ is an instrumental also from the Moving Pictures album, but the Rio performance is about thirty years later.
Welcome to RUSH! The greatest Prog Rock group of all time. They are in the top 5 of all time consecutive gold/platinum albums. Considering the Beatles and Rolling Stones are 1 and 2, they are in pretty good company. Never had a number 1 hit, but their following is unbelievable. Many of their songs require you to think, which is why some people don't like them. Neil Peart is considered to be one of the greatest drummers in Rock...... I suggest you listen to their breakthrough album, 2112. This will give you a good sense of their direction. The first side of the album is one song, with several movements. Also, their final album, Clockwork Angels, ends with a very thought provoking song, The Garden. Neil passed away in January of 2022.....enjoy.
Look for the original version of Working Man from their first album, then check out the same song from their Time Machine Cleveland show. They’re near 60 years then and TEAR IT UP!!! Trust me, you WON’T be disappointed!
Genre probably “prog metal.” Progressive in the sense of transitions, time signature changes, melodic elements passed from one instrument to another. Metal meaning progressive rock with a harder edge. Astonishing that all that multi layered music is made by three guys. Check out YYZ, La Villa Strangiato (instrumentals), Xanadu (12 minute epic), Limelight, Red Barchetta.
If you want to experience it as we did as fans through the years, go back and listen to each album in order playing the whole thing through. It will give you a much better understanding of their music and developement. It will take you some time as they do have 19 studio albums. Take your time and spin them a bunch of times. :) You'll not regret it.
Seriously.
The late Taylor Hawkins said that if you liked Yes and Genesis (prog bands) for the complexity, but you also liked Black Sabbath (metal) for the heaviness, then Rush was the perfect band for you. They were the first prog/metal band who inspired a ton of other bands.
Shocking you never hear of Rush. Hopefully you take the dive and discover what we all know.... They are the greatest prog rock/metal band ever. Great musicianship, thoughtful lyrics and by far one of the greatest bands to watch live.
Gene Simmons was once asked what kind of band Rush were and his response was something along the lines of “Rush is Rush…”. Basically they’re their own genre lol.
Welcome to Rush, 3 geniuses, their masterpiece is Xanadu, live Exit Stage Left try Rage Against the Machine...killing in the name...bulls on parade...rodeo...wake up Tool...the pot, schism, pneuma, 40 6 and 2 good luck look forward to your reactions
Kinda blows my mind that you are totally unfamiliar with one of the greatest rock bands of all time...but at the same time I envy you having the experience for the first time.
Seriously.
They're in a genre called progressive rock. Not just a rock band. LOL. And that's not typical of Rush's music. This was more of them trying to do pop music. Don't get me wrong. This is one of my favorite Rush songs. There is so much more depth to their music in another songs. I suggest their songs limelight, Xanadu, freewill and of course the epic 20-minute song call 2112 off the album of the same name.
Rush is an incredibly talented group of individuals RIP Neal Peart. There are so many songs, the "Best Intro Ever" is fantastic. Spirit of Radio, Trees, Subdivisions, YYZ (pronounced Zed not ZEE) etc. Also, Slipknot (Psychosocial, duality, Unsainted, Snuff etc), Disturberd (Sound of Silence, The Light, Stupifiy, Down with the Sickness etc.), Sabaton (No bullets Fly, 1916, Christmas Truce etc), Nightwish (depends which lead singer you prefer, but no bad songs), all excellent bands with incredible songs.
Rush (3 pc band) & "The Warning" (3 pc band comprised of 3 young sisters from Mexico) they are on Metallica's album, they're very talented, clean, moving up. Start with "Evolve" by The Warning. Yes they're from Mexico but they've traveled the World already, and speak perfect English. Just wait, you'll see.
You need to try several different eras of this band. Everyone has to listen to the top 6. You just listened to one of them. The others are Spirit of radio, limelight, subdivisions, YYZ, and freewill. Then you need to go back and do fly by night, the trees, la Villa strangiato, working man, and 2112. Then move forward to the 90s and do dreamline, bravado, roll the bones, and driven. Then top it off with some 200's Rush with Headlong flight, BU2B, and the Garden.
The use of odd time signatures and the musicianship on display should tell you this is not simply a 'rock' band. Check out 'The Spirit of Radio' next. It will become pretty apparent pretty quickly that there's really no such thing as a 'typical' Rush song....
Next please do "Working Man" Live in Cleveland and "YYZ" Live in Rio. (Hint: If you don't do those particular versions, your viewers will ask you to do them all over again. I've seen it happen on other channels many many times.)
Other songs? Jacob's Ladder (live Exit Stage Left) as well as Xanadu. 2112🤯, La Villa Strangiato and The Camera Eye. They have a ton of amazing music. ✌️
Hard to understand soneone from back then doesn't know any of Rush's music! Try The Spirit Of Radio, YYZ, Fly By Night, La Villa Strangiato, Time Stand Still, The Trees, Closer To The Heart, Subdivisions!
Howard Stern loves to stir the pot about who the best rock drummer of all time was, but he is completely ignorant. Hands down, its Professor Peart. He laid the beats and wrote most of the lyrics and music. We lost a genius, but he will never be forgotten.
I've never really listened to rock bands. I liked Talking Heads in the 80's and REM in the 90's, but we were Pentecostal in my family, so I was not "allowed" to listen to rock, really. @@johnord684 I picked it because the internet said it is their best song! But thanks for those suggestions, I will definitely check them out. I want to try another Rush song.
I just stumbled upon your channel and reaction. Soooooo how is it that you've never heard this? What were you listening to back in the late 70's and early 80's??? Just curious. THIS SONG WAS EVERYWHERE. BTW, all of RUSH is great. Not a typical band that sang about sex, drugs and rock n roll. Much deeper meanings and stellar music from this trio.
I've never really listened to rock bands. I liked Talking Heads in the 80's and REM in the 90's, but we were Pentecostal in my family, so I was not "allowed" to listen to rock, really. @@citywoof Well that makes perfect sense. I was raised a rock n roll kid. Been to more concerts than I can remember. I'm 56 now and have slowed down quite a bit but before Covid I was averaging 35 to 75 bands a year. I too enjoyed the 80's new wave movement and was able to see the best of them back then as well. Thank you for responding you cute Silver Bear! 😘

Best 3 man band ever. Neil is called The Professor for a reason, he's your favorite drummer's favorite drummer and he was a spectacular lyricist.

They are the High Priests of Progressive Rock. They influenced generations of bands
Best 3 piece ever assembled
how did you live through 1981 without hearing this???
best drummer ever! God rest his soul
You just got yourself into an extremely deep rabbit hole , be ready to expect the unexpected you can’t classify their music only to say this band is one of the greatest live show bands ever and it’s all about the music
Oops, you're probably right, Rush is on the genre "Rush". I know that. :)
Natural science . Most awesome
Good choice to start with, awesome band. Thank you for the reaction👍
Canadas prog rock legends . The drummer Neil Peart passed away awhile back . Bought a bottle of high end scotch and listened till drunk crying that day . Fram and Alberta boy , 57 year old , saw them 5 times , took my kidsn the last 2 times

“I can definitely hear that song again” is the understatement of the century.
RIP Professor. 😢
Best band ever. 👍👍
They are playing what was called back in the day ... good music !
La Villa Strangiato - prepare to be amazed!
🎤 🎹 🎸 🥁 🎸 🐐 🐐 🐐
“Wow! I really like that! That was really great!”……. That’s Rush!
Closer too the heart
It's never too late to get into the best band ever. Enjoy the journey!
welcome to the world I've been living for the past forty years, you will listen to them for the rest of your days lol I predict it so

The best of Canadian Prog Rock. Outstanding musicians. I got a kick out of seeing you enjoy it.
Hard to believe someone of this age has never heard this song before
Rush doesn't really fit into any boxes. Just 3 guys that together make the best music in the world.
Like that? Then start your RUSH rabbit hole dive with "Living in The Limelight", "Subdivisions", and "Freewill", just for starters. As always, RIP Neil.

Glad you enjoyed an iconic Canadian Progressive - Rock band, I saw RUSH in late 80s in Halifax( Metro Center) Nova Scotia, Canada.👍✌
You've barely scratched the surface of Rush's music.."We wanted to be the world's smallest symphony orchestra"-(Geddy Lee/Bassist).✌️
If you want to expand your perspective, I highly recommend this particular rabbit hole.
I'm alive at almost 60, because I discovered these guys at 12.
Welcome to the Rush rabbit hole. There are 40 years of amazing performances by these 3 virtuoso musicians. See you a little further down the hole.
Check out more by Rush

If he plays an instrument, we just lost him for like two years of intense study and near-mililitant fervor.
Rush is Rush.... Not really Rock, not really progressive but it is amazingly crafted music with it's own brand of everything. Best band EVER !!!

Rush = greatness! Have fun, listen to is ALL and let me know when you want to take it to another level with… more.
🤘😎🤘
Progressive Rock and Roll, also known as Prog Rock or just Prog.
RUSH Freewill!! your welcome
Another great, and underrated Canadian trio is Triumph. You should check them out. Their lead singer/guitarist Ric Emmett is fantastic.
RUSH = The greatest, most talented and most intelligent band in rock history. Not my opinion, it's a FACT of life. Enjoy!
If you want to experience it as we did as fans through the years, go back and listen to each album in order playing the whole thing through. It will give you a much better understanding of their music and developement. It will take you some time as they do have 19 studio albums. Take your time and spin them a bunch of times. :) You'll not regret it.
If you've never heard this song then I've never crapped my pants.
Well that’s very cool 😎
Progressive Rock. And no group did it better. Except maybe YES, but that's another subject. Rush is great.
Progressive rock , you got to do Xanadu from exit stage left
Do Territories live! It's gotta be live!
Welcome to Rush, 3 geniuses, their masterpiece is Xanadu, live Exit Stage Left
try
Rage Against the Machine...killing in the name...bulls on parade...rodeo...wake up
Tool...the pot, schism, pneuma, 40 6 and 2
good luck look forward to your reactions
Kinda blows my mind that you are totally unfamiliar with one of the greatest rock bands of all time...but at the same time I envy you having the experience for the first time.

@@citywoof I consider that kind of censorship and oppression child abuse. Seriously.
@@daveminers3404 I agree!
@@citywoof welcome to some great music. :)
The Spirit of Radio. Should really be the next one. Welcome to what will become your Rush journey.
If your into Cars try Red Barchetta studio version
If you want to hear something more raw and bluesy from RUSH may I suggest Here Again from their first studio album
Progressive Rock or Prog Rock if a genre needs to be assigned.
Listen to the albums : Permanent waves and Moving pictures and go form there !!!!
At your age and you never heard this song let alone Rush??… there’s no way …. you have lived a sheltered life sir !!!
Extremely sheltered. Pentecostal family on both sides, and we were not allowed to listen to “ worldly” music.
Progressive Rock
also, do "time stand still" next
Melodic progressive teckno metal symphonic
And they were their own segment short of invented the box.
Check out hemisperes..😂
Aaaaand the number of air drummers spawned by Neil surpasses a billion! 😂
Welcome to the Rabbit Hole! I am sure we will be a lot more of you here.
You said you were stoned, LIKE N SUBSCIBE🤣
hahaha - I love gummies. I'd love to have you as a subscriber :) Thanks!
You should listen to any other Rush song because they have too many great ones to name
Howard Stern loves to stir the pot about who the best rock drummer of all time was, but he is completely ignorant. Hands down, its Professor Peart. He laid the beats and wrote most of the lyrics and music. We lost a genius, but he will never be forgotten.
It’s known as progressive rock, or prog rock.
I have to ask, how did you miss these guys?

xanadu live goes ok
can you say rabbit hole
Why is it always Tom Sawyer? Why not Xanadu, The Necromacer or Bytor and the Snow Dog
@@johnord684 I picked it because the internet said it is their best song! But thanks for those suggestions, I will definitely check them out. I want to try another Rush song.
60 seconds isn’t that long ago dude.

@@RonDro67 My pleasure , thanks for commenting! 😘 we’re pretty close in age.
