Spain were very lucky to qualify from this group. That Romanian side were really good, after the huge success, on the back of Steaua Bucharest winning the first European Champion's Cup going over the Iron Curtain a few months earlier before this qualifying campaign started. Signs on, Spain had a very poor Euro '88 campaign in West Germany. Only won 1 game from 3. It was a potentially a good Spanish side, after their terrible displays throughout the early 80's. The problem was, they lacked a scoring threat if Michel or Butragueno ever got injured. They didn't quite gel as a team. The Qualifying campaign for Italia '90 was much better for them.
@Daniel Thor Copperfield Daniel, are you having a laugh man, the facts don't lie man. Have you seen Romania's results in their qualifying for World Cup 1986? Euro 1988, Euro '92, in which they were hard done by with some dodgy refereeing decisions. They had a terrific World Cup in USA' 94, so they were actually building up momentum all of the time, beating big teams in America and the afermentioned 1990 World Cup. To put things into context, they had to deal with a violent revolution in late 1989, they hammered Denmark in Bucharest in the last game at around the same time. So don't be talking down Romania at all. They were excellent in Italy. They should have beaten us, Ireland man in Genoa in normal time. They beat an Argentina team, let's be honest, whose best days were past them. Maradona was blackguarded and fouled so much in Italy, but he was past his best by then, remember that was his third World Cup in 1990. He was fucked on drugs by USA'94, look at his eyes in celebrating his goal v Greece in America. His prime was the 1986 World Cup. Argentina lost, because they were negative, dour, slowing the play down in all their games, because, they were not the best team in that tournament of Italia'90 .They didn't deserve to be even the second best, Yugoslavia should have ended their World Cup on the penalties in their Quarter Final. As for Spain, you are right, they were the perennial underachieving cinderalla of World, not a mind European football, all because of ego's, arrogance and players from Real Madrid not getting on with players from very independently minded clubs such as Barcelona and Atheltico Bilbao. They didn't gel and their defence was always a problem throughout the 80's. You are right, they were excellent from late 2006 onwards.
@Daniel Thor Copperfield One swallow boy doesn't make a summer. That loss to Switzerland was their only blot in that whole tournament. I think you are misconstrued over my passion v getting worked up. As for my Irish team, thry have nothing to do with this topic. Stay on the topic lad. England getting relegated by Italy down to a lower tier in recent days, is something not to be proud about. You are right though, we here in Ireland are the pits now, embarrassing, when we here in were no. 8 in the world in 1990. Of course we can thank John Bosman's European Court Ruling in 1995, the day that Home Nations football died, this man should be shot. It all but ended the 3 Foreigner Rule which was hugely successful in England at the time in the early years of the Premiership. The Irish soccer team have never recovered since, neither have Scotland to a degree. That's the fucking truth.
@Daniel Thor Copperfield Not making up any excuses at all Danny boy, they are the facts. Fair play to Wales, they are much smaller and better than us. We're crap now.
@Daniel Thor Copperfield Ifully agree with everything you've said Daniel. Absolutely 💯. The Dutch and the Irish have always got on well Supporter's wise at tournaments actually, eventhough we've a problem with William of Orange and the siamese relationship you've always had with the British going back to medieval times. That wonderful Dutch team of total football of Cryuff under one of the greatest managers of all time, Rinus Michels. Total football. I loved it.
Menudo meneo le mete Rumanía a España en el partido de Bucarest. Es increíble que al final de aquella fase de clasificación pasara España en lugar de los rumanos, aunque después dieron una imagen muy pobre en la fase final de la Euro-88.
