  • This video is for DaVinci Resolve - How to Color Correct and Colour Grade with NO LUTS or PLUGINGs. I also made this workflow for Final cut pro and DaVinci Resolve, you can find those here:
    ►Premiere Pro: • Color Correct LOG Like...
    ►Final Cut Pro X: • Color Correct LOG Like...
    Color correcting C-Log and S-Log from the Canon EOS R, and Sony A7 line up, and the C200 footage is actually much easier than you think. And with a tiny bit of knowledge you will be able to go from this… to this in about 1 min. Today I will show you how without any special plugins or LUTs.
    This technique I am using in this video will work in any editor that has color correction controls.
    In this video we will talk about:
    • How to set the exposure and contrast properly for Log Footage
    • how to easily white balance with and without a color chart using the waveform.
    • How to correct skin tone issues using the vector scope.
    • How to check to make sure the skin tone is set to between 40 and 70 IRE and exposed properly.
    • How to save the preset to use on all your footage.
    • And how you will never have to ask for help again once you practice these steps
    Full disclosure, I am not a colorist, for most of my client work I will gladly hire pros to be as precise as possible to grade the footage. However for smaller projects and my own personal work, I learned the steps required to quickly get from Log footage to a base grade without using LUTs or expensive plugins. I am still learning and tweaking as I go, but that's the nature of the creative field, it's always changing and improving.
    So this isn't the be all and end all to color correcting C-Log (or any log footage for that matter), there are many ways to do the same thing. But it's a method I have found works really well to rough in a base grade and add some personality to it after.

    Very good video and straight to the point! I learned a few things about making my own lut. I thought about it but was not sure that it would be that simple. I shall make some own luts for EOS R : ) Great tip on the skin tone. Question; what is it about Canons own luts for EOS R that are so exact or not? When I apply them the footage get very over exposed of course after taking it down it looks good, I don't understand why they made it so. I find that most luts crush the blacks so making my own is a good way to get it as I want. Would you like to share your color settings for the project; input, timeline and export? I never managed to get Resolve videos to get the same look after export as on the timeline so I worked it out backwards and simply made a lut to apply for the timeline just before export to look good on Safari and Chrome. How do the movie production companies do to get the colors look so good on all three; Safari, Crome and Firefox?

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  4 года назад

      This is the exact reason I made this video, I got frustrated trying to use the Canon Provided Luts. It is not clear which one is best suited for the EOSR and the manual that is provided isn't very useful. So I went on a hunt to figure out how to best use the C-Log footage. I was determined to use C-Log because it gives a few more stops of dynamic range and one never knows if shooting conditions will ideal when you are in a run and gun situation. I was very comfortable exposing for the C200, but those techniques did not translate to the EOS R so I spent a few days testing to see what works best for the EOS R. Then I had to learn how to grade that footage to maximize the quality.
      Our studio monitors have always been color calibrated to match from screen to screen to screen, but I understand the issue you are referring to - And quicktime on the mac is notorious for color and gamut shifting after export - check out this video that may help explain and resolve your issue. ruclips.net/video/YwjLuUR51gE/видео.html

    I am not shooting LOG as I am using a Canon 5Dmk3, what picture style set-up would you recommend based on the limitation of the bit colour? I have used Cinestyle but getting back to a good image has proved difficult. I can see that your method in this video will correct practically everything and as a stills photographer is far more understandable than using LUTs

    When you're doing the skin tones you say you want to keep them between 40 and 70 but I don't see those numbers on the scale on the left. Can you explain. Have subscribed because like others here have said, your explanations are very clear and easy to follow

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  3 года назад

      Hi John, just seeing this now, you are correct, Davinci works in 16bit color space and so the numbers on are a different scale. but it's roughly the same on a scale of 0-100 it's 40-70 on a scale of 0-1024 it's roughly 400 to 700. That's why in the video I said 40-70% - Let me know if this clears it up!

    The thing is that after you balanced whites and blacks on your first shot and went for the skintones correction with the offset wheel you shifted all your neutrals as well as overall balance to the magenta :) So it is necessary to balance whites and blacks again

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  2 года назад +1

      You are 100 right, that is why I made a part 2 where I go over more advanced steps that correct that. This was more of a intro to working with C-Log - Though the follow up was in FCPx, I haven't made one for DR yet.

    8:12 - the vectorscope indicates that the cyan and blue are shifted. The hue needs to be adjusted, otherwise the magenta and red will dominate the highlights and it will have that tint as shown in the footage.

    Thnaks! But I have a question. How to do a color correction of theses log footages to bring colors to DCI-P3 and not Rec 709?

    • @RafaelLudwig
      @RafaelLudwig  3 года назад

      This is good question! (if I understand it correctly) Both Adobe Premiere and FCPX work on a “what you see is what you get” philosophy. If your interface display is calibrated and using the proper ICC profile, you shouldn’t have to touch anything, ever. It just works. But this assumes that you are working with a DCI/P3 display, if not then it's a bit of a guessing game. I will have to look into it further to see if there is a way to tone map Dci/p3 on a Rec709 or RGBs display.

      Sorry for not being clear, press shift h to select and deselect the qualifier.
      Definitely need to work on my pacing!

      Thanks for the sub! I know I am doing FCP tuts but, once those are done, I will shift to do more Davinci focused videos. Thanks for watching and the comment!

    I tried it but didn't work for me. The skin selection goes off the skin when the subject moves. It's not trackable and you didnt show that. Am I doing something wrong?

      Yeah you are correct, I didn't get into the advance grading in this video. There is a way to do secondary with qualifiers, mattes and tracks. For all things Davinci make sure you check out Casey Faris ruclips.net/user/CaseyFaris777 or Waqas Qazi ruclips.net/channel/UCZ_4tLOd-iu4zBDApQsZZTw Both are great!

    I have no idea why so many content providers spend the first 3 to 4 minutes of their presentations trying to convince the people who are watching their video to watch their video.
