Such a gift to see Rachel again and listen to her. I've been a devoted fan since 1993. I'm from California, moved to Oregon. On a trip back to la, I took my shabby chic book and went to the Montana store in Santa Monica hoping to meet her and get an autograph. She was out of town, but I so loved her store. She had a vast collection of mercury glass and gorgeous fabrics. 😍
I think I’ve “done” all the trends. It was exhausting! 😂 I finally have given myself (in my seventh decade of life) permission to be authentic-combining my French background with my American life. Shabby Chic is unapologetically feminine, restful, and beautiful without banging us over the head with do’s and don’t’s. A perfect blend of Japanese wabi-sabi and old European tradition ❤ Thanks for the video!

Two artists together today! I loved the interior of the restaurant Madre in LA some years ago, very Habana chic! I still remember every detail, including the wallpaper and oil painting in the bathroom. I love the new pink comforter. Beautiful! Is it out yet?
The best lesson I learned, including embracing imperfections, was leaning a beautiful mirror VS hanging it. It takes a grand piece and makes it approachable and romantic instead of stiff and too formal.

I’m looking across my living room at my lovely, large Squadgy (sp?) chair, still covered in white denim (the third white slipcover). I ordered the chair from the Montana store in 1992; and I have a sofa in another room. With every iteration of my life and residence, they will always have pride of place.
I’ve been following Rachel Ashwell since so many years and I used to go to her Montana shop where the couches were so comfortable that I always ended up falling asleep on them. I just don’t understand why leaving L.A. and Malibu, and this gorgeous house she had to go to a rather cold weather in England? Usually, older we get, more sun we need. I left Paris to move to L.A. and I don’t see myself doing a move back. I’m just wondering why? It’s possible to do smaller and simpler in L.A. too. But I suspect that there must be personal reasons for that and I don’t want to be nosy. Anyway, beautiful as usually. Cute dog.
What a treat this is. I am a designer of a certain age. I have come full circle on almost all trends. I am so happy to feel her style come to my workroom again, because my personal home has so much of her in it. She always looks fresh in any mix I do and live. It is lovely to see her back in her home country. I have lived in many of the city’s she has worked in Southern California. She will be missed here, but she looks so happy to be back to where she started, if even for a little while. Thank you for sharing.

To add a touch of balance. The use of the phrase “style icon” is, at best, subjective, and, at worst, just plain daft. Style is personal and to someone like me who has studied the Arts and Crafts movement for a long time, made many pieces in that aesthetic, I can think of nothing less stylish than “shabby chic”. Everyone to their taste.
As you say, each to their own. However I will, if you'll permit, defend the phrase I used, 'style icon.' I think that the stream of comments here from people who've been not only inspired by Rachel, but felt allowed to be creative with their own surroundings with the encouragement of Rachel's demonstrations of how to create her 'shabby chic' aesthetic with just a few, not necessarily expensive or exclusive, but none the less attractive, well chosen pieces, are testament to the influence Rachel has had over her thirty five years in business. To those people Rachel is a style icon. And, if you'll allow, I think her clean take on the old English country house worn look, recreating it with her recognisable palette, does give her, after thirty five years, to some extent iconic status. I'm inspired by the fact that her business continues to evolve with how she chooses to live her life. I thought her comments at the end of this clip very generous, especially to many of my subscribers who are focusing on creating sustainable small businesses themselves. Rachael, in miss your linens being sold here in stores. No one makes linens as beautiful as yours. I have your comforter set on my bed. It is so beautiful! This is my 2nd because the first one i wore completely out. Bought the same one again.
Where can one purchase the wallpaper? I went online, found her site, but when you hit the wallpaper bit, it states, "sorry nothing featured". That wallpaper on top is sublime.

I left Paris to move to L.A. and I don’t see myself doing a move back. I’m just wondering why? It’s possible to do smaller and simpler in L.A. too. But I suspect that there must be personal reasons for that and I don’t want to be nosy.

What a treat this is. I am a designer of a certain age. I have come full circle on almost all trends. I am so happy to feel her style come to my workroom again, because my personal home has so much of her in it. She always looks fresh in any mix I do and live. It is lovely to see her back in her home country. I have lived in many of the city’s she has worked in Southern California. She will be missed here, but she looks so happy to be back to where she started, if even for a little while. Thank you for sharing.

To add a touch of balance. The use of the phrase “style icon” is, at best, subjective, and, at worst, just plain daft.
Style is personal and to someone like me who has studied the Arts and Crafts movement for a long time, made many pieces in that aesthetic, I can think of nothing less stylish than “shabby chic”. Everyone to their taste.
As you say, each to their own. However I will, if you'll permit, defend the phrase I used, 'style icon.' I think that the stream of comments here from people who've been not only inspired by Rachel, but felt allowed to be creative with their own surroundings with the encouragement of Rachel's demonstrations of how to create her 'shabby chic' aesthetic with just a few, not necessarily expensive or exclusive, but none the less attractive, well chosen pieces, are testament to the influence Rachel has had over her thirty five years in business. To those people Rachel is a style icon. And, if you'll allow, I think her clean take on the old English country house worn look, recreating it with her recognisable palette, does give her, after thirty five years, to some extent iconic status. I'm inspired by the fact that her business continues to evolve with how she chooses to live her life. I thought her comments at the end of this clip very generous, especially to many of my subscribers who are focusing on creating sustainable small businesses themselves. Where can one purchase the wallpaper? I went online, found her site, but when you hit the wallpaper bit, it states, "sorry nothing featured". That wallpaper on top is sublime.

What a happy surprise to see Rachel Ashwell again. Way back in the 90's hers was the only show and voice on interior design on cable TV before the internet. I would have been happier to hear Rachel take us on a tour of her own house herself... I am nearing the end of the video and i have hardly heard Rachel
