been doing cichlids for 40 years, was 1 of the first people to get rid of the under gravel filter system at 8 ;-) I never do water change just water add and filter clean outs every 3 months or so ... I feed & watch mostly ;-) again over 40 years
Mbunas also love to dig and rearrange the sand, making hills and valleys so please provide a thick layer of sand. They are so cool to watch and see the landscape change from day to day.
FANTASTIC video! One stop info shopping for us newbies. I am nearly done setting up my first Cichlid tank (cycling right now). This video confirmed that what I am doing is correct. Thank you!
This video is inspiring me to start my first HAP tank. Also, if you come to the Aquatic Experience please bring your merch. I'm sure people want to buy them!
Jay I thought this was a great video segment, I got motivated, to continue my love for fishes. all this information was awesome. thanks for this video, God bless.
hey i"ve had a tank for about eight years . with beginners fish .now its time to step it up . I"ve done alot of research on cichilds . and i thought i was ready ,until i saw you videos . dude you are aweeeeeesum . is saw your video with the holy rock. that is some really cool shit . so im going with that . im so hook on it . thanks alot bro.
Great vid as usual jay one thing to add would be aeration wave maker, airstone, point outputs to top of water etc. you know the deal. your definitely one of the best on you tube at making these informational vids your tanks looking great as always looking forward to seeing the new pickups.
Awesome vid I definitely agree with filtration only been doing this for 1year 1/2 and my tanks that do the best are over filtrated. I am using good food (ZHF)but when I use what NLS and YFS I have left it makes my tanks a mess....So good food is a BIG part of it a guy I use to get fish from used cheap food and my fish was 3 times bigger and had way more color and they were from same strain.
Great job with the video :) Excellent presentation. Still in the planning deco wise but know it's Mbuna for me. Have 2 55gal stacked both are over 25 yrs old so size is set. Top tank predominate Angels. Bottom preparing for Mbuna.
That was an awesome video! I can't help but see you in that sweatshirt and think how cold it was here yesterday! Whew! Great vid and it does help the hobbyist to remember that failing to plan is planning to fail....or at least waste a bunch of money. :)
Thank bro. I use to have tanks when I was younger. Always had nice tanks fish never died. But I think I was doing shit all wrong. I'm going to put another tank up and this video is my new fish bible!
It’s funny you mention it in the video. If only I watched this a week ago. Just bought a brand new 60 gallon tank and stand. Sand is my substrate. Well my magnet cleaner got a little grain of sand stuck in it and I went to clean the glass and screeeeeech big ok scratches on my 1 week old 60 gallon aquarium... I didn’t even get fish in it before something went wrong jeeez
I love your videos, Jay! Thanks for all the great information and humor! I wondered if the Carib Sea Substrate you use is the regular kind or the one labeled for African Cichlids?
Thank you for the info but what I was wondering is which of the filters that you have is the one that told me bio is it the sun sun also I mean I have a lot of questions but one that is important it is when you're doing the maintenance and the filters are you doing all of them at once or like one a week
great tips , cool vid , i also use carib seas african cichlid mix , but i use the original and the congo river mixed i have 120lbs in a 90gal overkill , i say NAAAAAAAAAAAH lol,, the other day i thought , why don't i ty some sand in my small 15gall what a nightmare that was , its like impossible to get no sand in in the hose while vaccuing the sand , so glad i switch to ACM 3 years ago
Good job J, should be very informative for rookies. Any thoughts on putting together a generalized vid on canister filter setup strategy. Would be nice to see a detailed approach from someone that has been there / done that. Not sure if you have done this in the past.
Love your videos I also love chhiclids quick question I have rock gravel that is covered in algae and food from a turtle tank and I need to know the safest and best way to clean this substrate
I have a 250g acrylic Tank That I built, I could build a much larger Tank (650G 10F long 3F depth and 3F in height, will go in the same place perfect!) but I calculate how much it would cost me to heat the tank and i given up on the idea lol so I went for 250 gallons And by the way I use a sump with a 2000 gallon return pump
Thank you Jay for helpful tips. I like to ask if I stack up a lot if rocks, do I need a piece of eggcrate on the bottom of the tank to support the glass because the rock is too heavy?
Nice video Jay a lot of good info. You should of talk a little about how important that you go though the nitrogen cycle before you put any fish in the tank.
this mate was a great video... think I will strongly consider back up sunsun cannisters. Stick with haps n peacocks until I settle in and master african cichlid water parameters. Matrix is becoming more affordable here in Oz but will check out the pond matrix too.....:)
Love this fucking video! Dude you're hilarious! And I don't even have cichlids but now I kinda want a cichlid tank! Think you can talk my wife in getting a tank like yours?? Lol
Awesome fish man! When you order fish from the Cichlid shop and southeast what do you put in option to get colorful ones? Do you get 1.5 unsexed option or no?
Hey Jay, straight up question.. i see your rocks have brown algae on them, is that from the actinic light? i get that brown algae in my tank whenever i use actinic, not when i use a 12k 'exotic pro panorama led' on my Brichardi tank.. i read online, actinic in the 450mm to 460mm range promotes algae. is that true? i have a current 14k/453 light. will they give me brown algae?? thanks, asap, oh and I am looking up the zitlight..
Thx for the quick response..... I have one more for ya. In one of your videos u were talking about chemi pure blue I use the product too. In both of my canisters Did u say to put poly fill under the chemi pure an then on top as well ??? I have Rena filstar lg canisters So good bacteria sits in the middle basket. Then the purigen An chemi. Then the floss So floss under the chemi an on top as well ? Thx jay

beautiful tank ! I love the rock background. The beginning of the video they all seemed to flock to you standing near them lol.
Awesome vid I definitely agree with filtration only been doing this for 1year 1/2 and my tanks that do the best are over filtrated. Good job J, should be very informative for rookies. Any thoughts on putting together a generalized vid on canister filter setup strategy. Would be nice to see a detailed approach from someone that has been there / done that. Not sure if you have done this in the past.

That's a detail. That's a whole different video lol but def good idea.
+D “SHOWTIME” BYRD double check that you don't have it to jammed with media and stuffing lol
this mate was a great video... think I will strongly consider back up sunsun cannisters. Stick with haps n peacocks until I settle in and master african cichlid water parameters. Matrix is becoming more affordable here in Oz but will check out the pond matrix too.....:)

Good stuff
Round of applause for suggesting a back up filter.
+NYCity Cichlids thank you.
What were the three fish suppliers you mentioned in this video?
Awesome fish man! When you order fish from the Cichlid shop and southeast what do you put in option to get colorful ones? Do you get 1.5 unsexed option or no?
HEy Jay where is a good site to resource driftwood from
Hmmmm depending on size Josh’s frogs is a good place.
@@Jaywil07 Thank you and I just subbed by the way
Peacocks appreciate swimming space. Maybe I misunderstood when you said they need rock space? Mbunas like swimming through rocks and rock space.
jay can u do a full fish list of your display
I will try and get that done once my tank is rocking.
How wide is the background
wow very cool fish there on your video
Nice fish 🐠
great video Jay ! i'm from Germany !

Well is it to late to be a winner on the give away ?
You forgot a Heater
Just move to Florida
Hey Jay, straight up question.. i see your rocks have brown algae on them, is that from the actinic light? i get that brown algae in my tank whenever i use actinic, not when i use a 12k 'exotic pro panorama led' on my Brichardi tank.. i read online, actinic in the 450mm to 460mm range promotes algae. is that true? i have a current 14k/453 light. will they give me brown algae??
thanks, asap, oh and I am looking up the zitlight..
great vid!
Thanks bud
what about a tank heater?
Some people do not require tank heaters.
Another great video señor Jay! Love watching your tank and fish... Do you know when you'll be ordering some fish yet?
I'm in the process sir.
Jay Wilson awesome! I'm thinking about ordering some fish online. I've never done it...
Hi jay,pls how do i do if i want to have a universal rocks background same as on your video.tks
Call them and tell them
Thx for the quick response..... Thx jay
Yes sir or you can buy Chemi pure blue and toss pyrogens
So I don’t need purigen if I’m using chemi pure blue ?? Because I’ve been running both together for a while now
Where can I find a lid for a sun sun 303B, I got one with a used tank, and the lid is broken, I can't use it until I fix the filter.
Looks great, but how old is this set-up. I see no algae on your background and rocks, how do you keep them looking so clean and algae free?
No
i love my bare buttom tank and wavemaker facing down. It keeps my aquarium super clean.
+Natsu END Dragneel there you go
