I am one of the 4,000 that were willing to put $100 deposit for reservation, but I live in TX. My main challenges before I can finalize and take delivery now that they are gearing up to start shipping these to retail consumers.
    a) Can I drive one of these in TX with a regular Driver License or will I need a Motorcycle license?
    b) No Federal Tax Credit for any EV classified as Motorcycle since end of 2016. Unlikely to resume under current administration.
    c) No State Tax Credit or Incentives in TX for any EV.
Currently, the Arcimoto seems best suited for consumers in California, Massachusetts, Maryland, Arizona, and Illinois which offer State Tax Credits or Incentives. I believe most of these are also States where you don't need a Motorcycle license to operate 3-wheel Motorcycles.
I won't ever ask for my $100 deposit back, but I will wait until I can drive (either Motorcycle license not required or I acquire one of those) in TX. Meanwhile if the Tax Credit / Incentive options become available or other improvements take place on the cars, that will make the longer wait more worthwhile.

Elio Motors did a lot of work nationally and state-by-state on creating laws recognizing the differences between 3-wheel vehicles and 2-wheel motor cycles. The result is the autocycle classification. 28 states with laws recognizing autocycles do not require operators and occupants of the autocycle to wear helmets. Unfortunately Texas' definition of an auto cycle seems to require a steering wheel which leaves the Archimoto a motorcycle and drivers to have Texas motorcycle driver's license as well as having to follow Texas motorcycle helmet laws.

I am wondering why you would be resistant to getting a Motorcycle Endorsement on your Drivers License? Since the Arcimoto is classified as a Motorcycle, you should be able to get the Endorsement using the Arcimoto. Sure, there might be a little bit of a hassle getting the Arcimoto to the DL Bureau, but, worst case, you could rent a trailer (and truck if needed) to haul the Arcimoto for your Motorcycle test. Also, I know here in FL a lot of motorcycle dealers offer classes and assistance to get the Motorcycle Endorsement. While getting the MC Endorsement might be a bit of a pain, it is not overly burdensome and should not prevent you from the enjoyment of owning an Arcimoto.

I totally get it. their is a huge disconnect. however if the price doesn't match then it just doesn't make sense. Considering a new car can cost 15+k and do both jobs. I just priced what I could find to be the cheapest 2019 brand new car at 16k. A Toyota Yaris. If its really 22k They would have to get well under 9k for me to consider this over a yaris lol. only because I'm not rich so I don't buy recreational vehicles. I tend to like multiuse things. But I agree for the used car market It would be ultra-affordable. just like some of the older electric cars on the used market now is well under 10k. only issue with those they still are kind of like recreation cars because of range. I cant wait till they get this battery energy density thing solved because the majority of people dont have the time and patience for charging with long trips. Time is definitely money. But the EV powertrain is really where the futures at regardless of whether batteries, hydrogen or something else is the energy source.

    • @Xubuntu47
      @Xubuntu47 5 лет назад

@@Lilmiket1000 Range is more of an imagined than a real issue for most people. If your daily use is under 100 miles, and you can charge at home, you'll never have a problem with range. For road trips, or hauling extra cargo, there are rentals. Most people buy overcapacity so they are always covered for any occasion, but is this necessary?
My issue with EVs is that I can't charge at home. I could charge at work, though, and that might be enough.

I like the interviews y'all do- thanks! And I wish Arcimodo much luck! But they are only ever going to be a niche product, for campuses, tourist and destination areas, golf courses maybe... The list is long for would-be 3-wheeled vehicles that have tried to make it in this space and failed (start with Aptera and make your way through the alphabet). Because it is still a motorcycle- and because of that, it is missing a lot things you want in a daily driver: AC. Airbags. Forward Collision warning and lane centering. Autonomous driving. Room for more than 2 small bags of groceries. 5-star collision test ratings. Comfort. The ability to hear the person you are talking to, whether in the back seat with your phone.
People buy 4-5 seat cars not to be wasteful, but because their car has to fulfill many functions, from getting to work, to having room for your coworkers for lunch breaks. You want room for your camping gear one weekend, and room for your new TV the next. This is why SUVs and CUVs (really, just rebadged, taller hatchbacks) are growing in popularity.
And the Arcimodo won't replace many motorcycles, as it can't duplicate the driving experience of a motorcycle (leaning into a curve is one of the fun things about motorcycles, along with having your date having to wrap her arms around you to stay on- can't duplicate that on an Arcimodo;-).

    • @fmpwizard
      @fmpwizard 5 лет назад

There isn't a technical reason not to have features lie forward collision warning, wouldn't that just be sensors in the right places? As for hearing the person behind you, I got to test drive one of early models about 2 years ago and was surprised how well you can hear the other person (tried it both, as a driver and passenger).
I'm on the waiting list, but I don't see this as a replacement vehicle, we have one electric car for the whole family, this would be in addition to it.

Again, I wish nothing but success for Arcimoto! But my concern is that the CEO views this as a replacement for everyone's daily driver. If the success of his company depends on that, he is in trouble, and is grossly over-estimating his market size. Most drivers cannot afford multiple vehicles, so most are going to buy that 4-seat car/SUV for the versitility and safety it provides. Many others have tried to crack the three-wheeled market for the last two decades. None have succeded.

I am not far from the Gold Coast up in Queensland and they would sell like hotcakes there , the Coast is about 30km-50km top to bottom so the ability to commute to and from work there is achievable plus with our sun a good quality solar panel incorporated on the turret/roof could give you some extra kilometres plus I see there would be room behind that rear seat to incorporate a tiny sine wave inverter to also boost the vehicle even if it was a seperate lithium battery that you switched to if you came to the end of your range on the main battery. here in Australia where we do have long distances between cities some form of Hybrid FUV would be awesome.

Interesting that these extremely light vehicles are only a little more energy efficient than a Tesla in city driving and probably less efficient on the highway. This highlights for me what an incredible job Tesla has done. These 3-wheel electric motorcycles may do well in some niche markets, but electric cars still seem like the game changing product to me.

Jim Roth I believe it' has to do with battery quantity on board, use too many and it becomes even more inefficient due to battery weight.

Really nice idea this would be Great in the Caribbean Islands too, where the roads are a little more winding and full of Hills at times and streets are small. You can Zip in and out in no time to the beaches, restaurants, grocery stores etc.
---------- It Would be nice if you can Have the option to Upgrade the Seating from Two to Four passengers. Like if you bought a two seater and you had a kid or two kids. Now the family can still have use of the vehicle instead of going to buy another vehicle to accomodate the whole family instead.
---- Another thing,, I would really like to see a Person with a dissability use one of these, to see how easy to get in and out and maneuver the vehicle. I guess am thinking of the fact if it will be comfortable for them enough to be able to drive it. Just becasue the way you sit in a Car and the way you sit in this is a little different like riding a bike (of course ) an some People tend to have back issues or leg issues. It may not be a big point for some but for a lot of People it is. just saying.
---------- CAN YOU TEST DRIVE THE FUV ? -------- guess that would help with the dissability part. Do you have Any Options to Modify it if need be ?
----- Am not being Ignront just looking into buying one in the future. so am new to this. thanks.

I'm sure someone has experienced crashing those front wheels into something. The cabin gives the illusion of a slim vehicle, but adding in the width of those wheels is a different story.

Really nice! I'm sure it'll be a hit as this is pretty much what I would design to maximize performance.
The main reason for its efficiency is its small cross sectional area and lower drag.
The most efficient shape would be something that looked like a tuna or shark.
A fully enclosed and stretched version with 4 inline seats would get awesome economy for a family!

I would love to see these in a car-sharing service like Car2Go or Zipcar. Charging would be the main barrier, but I have read about mobile charging solutions for electric cars. That would work even better with the FUV because of the smaller battery, which I presume translates to quicker charging. It depends on the charger they have on this vehicle, which they don't really talk about.

Why is it that all of these designs lack doors!?!!? I mean I can understand if you're not worried about the cold but rain is still a thing! Not to mention part of the benefit of a traditional car is that you can lock it and your belongs up. I'd never find a use for a vehicle like that other than a joy ride on a nice day but even then I might as well take a bicycle.

Ironic that it's made in Eugene, a rainy, often cold climate. Saw one out on Lorane highway just outside of Eugene, Oregon and did not know what the heck it was till I was able to close in on it and see the brand name, but the first thing I thought was that it was open on the sides on a cold day. Freezing.
Also, how far can you go on a charge? Last I read, it was a 100 - 130 miles. Sounds like it's a lot but not really as vast as the distances are in the US. How long does it take to charge up? What kind of outlet do you have to have? Also, how are the batteries recycled? What are they made out of? Do they pollute when they're made? Just playing a little Devil's Advocate, here. Electric vehicles DO have a carbon footprint and electric production does have an impact on the environment.

My question is that the fuv rental business might face the same problem as the bicycle rental business that had a major problem in maintaining a sustainable model with bicycles being damaged and some destroyed by careless and irresponsible customers.

If you get a rental place for these in surfers paradise on the Gold Coast in QLD Australia you would make a killing. Moped hire places used to hire so many scooters before the locals started complaining. However these being electric and alot more stable a vehicle you wouldn't have e the complaints or accidents like with the mopeds.

I like this. It's not quite the 200 mile range that I would like, but if I can get some studded tires for this with a robust defroster, I could commute with this. It would be even better with 3 motors and some 33" tires.
