What sense would it make to rebuild in the same spot? The government should claim the areas close to the riverbed a flood plain. Compensate the residents/businesses & not allow any new construction there.
We definitely have to do something different. When people were nomadic, they avoided areas like that by moving around. They would move away during hurricane season or other natural weather disasters. I believe your right. Why build again in the same spot?

I live in WNC. You'd be flabbergasted to see where people choose to set up homesteads here. Bottoms of mountains and ridges right next to small creeks. I would be worried about going outside and getting bit by a snake at least. Cell phone service is already sketchy down there on a normal day. 911 calls were able to get through during the disaster but Idk for how long afterwards. It's just too risky.
I'm sorry this happened. We will look for ways to donate goods for the people who were harmed.

I'm glad I don't work for the Utility Company anymore. The heat, the rain, the mosquitos, looking for a restroom while being on the road all day, being trapped in a truck all day for 12 hrs x 7 days, for ungrateful customers. Company watching me on GPS and my idle time during the day, threatening to fire me daily.

Which state is that may I ask? I stay in NC also and I have yet to really experience really bad wether like heavy snow and really heavy rains except for when tropical season hit. I can tell you we have some bipolar weather but we don’t have the worst. One thing I’ve realized it does get really humid here but I can say quite a few hurricanes brush right past us it may get the coast but rarely land fall

Ya know, the eastern part of south-west north Carolina.
@@ianwerden5601 I know I live in western North Carolina mountains. I have family from here to the coast. It flooded in Avery county. That's the mountains of North Carolina on the Tennessee line just in case you're wondering. And it flooded in Asheville North Carolina. That also happens to be Western North Carolina sweetheart. But not heard of anybody missing from any of these areas.
A significant portion of damage occurred in Cruso, NC. Just south(nearer to headwaters of the Pigeon River) of Canton, NC. That portion of River normally sits at 1-2ft. Flood stage is 7ft. It went above 16ft over the weekend. 225 structures destroyed, 300 million in damage. That assessment is of Cruso alone. Canton and Clyde (larger population) have yet to be assessed.

I understand that climate change is becoming a issue but these tropical storms happen every year and it's been like that for decades now. Still we need to do the best we can to help
CLIMATE CHANGE/GLOBAL WARMING BEEN HAPPENING. AND STILL....PEOPLE DO NOT BELIEVE IN IT OR DO NOTHING ABOUT IT
20 deaths to many for a storm people who, once again, where unprepared. Remember Cat are used to describe wind speed not precipitation. It's more important for the coast which is low lying and more affected by winds. But the interior are more affected by floods than winds but because people see hurricane remnant they underestimate the very real threat of floods.
Please go to FEMA website and check flood maps to see if your area are prone to flooding. Be better for systems that are know to have large precipitation over a short period of time. This is going to get worse in a decade and at some point too expensive. Eventually the government will stop the flood insurance program due to cost overruns.

Move to higher ground folks. Build a river offset somewhere. Look for solutions before rebuilding. The whole world needs to thinking of these things.

Copious is not a good metric for how much water was there. The word Flood exists for a reason.

Seems like you don’t understand bodies of water (like rivers and streams) have their water levels rise and begin to flood nearby areas when torrential rainfall occurs....
