This is the first video like this I've seen that seems to have thought and care put into it, and I don't want that to go unappreciated so I thought I'd address some of the things said. Long comment inbound, in the years since I quit RUclips I still haven't mastered the art of brevity.
It's really weird hearing someone speak of the series fondly in a way that makes sense to me. It's easy to dismiss some kid liking it without being able to articulate why in any meaningful way, kids like almost anything colorful that moves, but stuff like this forces me to confront the possibility that maybe I did do something right after all. I still don't see it, I still just see poorly animated messes put together by a teenager in his spare time, but maybe that's part of what people liked. Considering that I myself cannot stand media that comes across as corporate and calculated, I guess I could see the merit of something so genuine and straightforward. Especially when it's frequently compared to loveless algorithm-bait. I won't give myself much credit for the series, but I can say with confidence that it came from the heart. Much of it certainly didn't come from the brain, at least in the colloquial sense.
It's hard for me to look back at this series, in fact what's shown here is the most I've seen of it in over half a decade, because I just see a whole heap of embarrassing mistakes from my teenage years and I always feel the need to justify it even though realistically I think everyone understands that what you did years ago doesn't reflect who you are now. I'll still do it a little bit though, at least in regards to the names which I think are what bother me the most at this point. I was in that stage I think a lot of underage (and some adult) writers go through where they think looking up name meanings online or using words from foreign languages is the pinnacle of naming schemes. Mucus is an especially obvious sign of this since I just put "slime" into Google Translate and somehow didn't realize that mucus is an English word as well. Not to mention that him being French adds nothing and just raises unnecessary questions about the setting. On top of that there's no real coherence to the names; some just have their mob name but slightly tweaked, some have actual names, some keep their mob name altogether, and so on.
I think that's a pretty good reflection of my creative process at the time though, or the lack of one. I just did whatever came to mind without much consideration. Most of the time I'd be setting up a scene without even knowing what was going to happen in it, and letting chaos reign from there. The little voice in your head telling you "That's probably a bad idea" was very quiet in mine. Which inevitably led to a lot of dubious decisions.
"What if the slime accidentally turned himself into a potion? Will people even understand that's what happened since I can't animate it well enough to make it look accidental? Doesn't matter, it'll work out."
"The Christmas special I was working on won't be finished in time. I know, I'll just add Christmas music to this other video that has nothing to do with Christmas! That seems like a sensible solution."
"I found a song I like the other week, why not put it into the video? Does it fit the tone? Will it seem weird to anyone that recognizes it? Too late to worry about that, I already did it. Also, what's copyright?"
Considering how popular the series was, it's kind of bizarre in hindsight just how careless I was about it. I would occasionally catch some dire animation errors in the editing and just leave it in because I couldn't be bothered to re-render and re-edit it all. And then there was the copyright side of things. Nowadays pretty much everyone knows how draconian RUclips is about that, but at the time it wasn't talked about as much (at least in my circles) nor was I old enough to know how to react to a video getting that scary copyright claim. With Stealing I was able to just replace the music (it originally had Zelda music, as per the recommendation of a classmate who was just as clueless about copyright), but with Hiding I don't remember what happened to mess up the audio so much. Just that I didn't care enough about the series at that point to try to fix it.
Funny enough, even Cooking was copyright claimed years after uploading even though I got that Jingle Bells track from RUclips's own music library. I guess they lost the rights to it, which a sensible company wouldn't hold their creators accountable for, but you know, RUclips. And unlike Stealing and Hiding, I wasn't even able to remove the music because the video "had too many views". So I just unlisted it out of spite so the claimants wouldn't get ad revenue from it, which I also did for the Halloween special since that music also got claimed with no way of removing it. Of course, I completely forgot to remove them from the playlist, but by the time I noticed that I didn't care and just left it alone. Again, it was all hilariously mishandled.
Another fun fact is that the reason Sylvester was late in Mining is because I genuinely forgot about him. I only noticed that when the animation was finished, and hastily added that bit to explain his absence. Adding all those new students to the cast was not a great move, and it was largely done because people were asking for it and I had my usual train of thought of "Sure why not I guess". Turns out the "why not" was that having to juggle such a large number of characters was kind of a chore. Giving them all something to do and having to put them all into the scene and move around made animating a lot less fun. I didn't fully realize it until later (since I again didn't spend much time reflecting on anything), but I didn't even like most of the new students. I always had a hard time thinking of something fun to have a silverfish do and it annoyed me that it was too small to even sit at its desk. It didn't look like it belonged there. The cave spider had similar size problems on top of just being a reskin of another mob, which was also an issue I had with the magma cube. Everything they did, existing characters could already do. And having a wither there as a student and not a staff member seemed strange in hindsight.
As for the lack of score card in Acrobatics, I actually explained that in an annotation (Remember when RUclips had those?). I was indeed tired of everyone disagreeing with the results and just told people to come up with their own grades. But then people of course complained about THAT instead and I added a second annotation saying "Okay fine, here you go". But since RUclips got rid of annotations you can no longer see any of that. It's also worth mentioning that I was using the Swedish grading system, not realizing that it varies quite a bit in the rest of the world. In Sweden, E is considered a passing grade. So getting an E or D wasn't necessarily bad. Only an F means you failed. To my understanding this is not the case in most other places, in fact E doesn't even exist for some reason. It just goes ABCDF, which still doesn't make sense to me. But getting back on topic, nowadays I would have just ignored such comments, in fact if anything I might have been tempted to make the grades unfair on purpose to encourage them and boost engagement. But that's another distinguishing feature between myself then and now. At the time I didn't have that cynical, detached mindset, I was taking each comment to heart and reacting accordingly. Probably taking things too personally at times, but I think that's part of growing up.
I really like your closing statement. With how often people draw the wrong conclusions, and with how difficult it is for me to explain my mindset (especially since it's like speaking on behalf of another person I barely remember), it's a refreshingly accurate summary. I think I myself tend to put too much weight on what was really just a teen messing around in an animation program and sharing it with whoever wanted to see it without a second thought. And while I'm unhappy with a lot of it today, I'm glad I had that phase. For years now I've had the opposite problem where nothing is ever good enough, so it's nice to have that backlog of stuff I did do. Sure, it came at the expense of it being a huge embarrassment in hindsight, but at the time I had fun with it and at least it proves that I CAN do things. I think everyone needs to do that at some point. Just do what interests them without worrying about how it'll turn out or how it'll be perceived in hindsight. Part of me still thinks that I should have spent time actually practicing animation and storytelling before I shared anything with the world, but it's hard to say that when it worked out as well as it did.
Oh, and because I'm seeing a lot of people in the comments (and elsewhere) talking about wanting someone to make a proper continuation and even considering doing it themselves, I also want to say what I always say on that subject... Don't. It was one series by one person and that's all it needs to be. Even a good imitation is still an imitation, and I would much rather see people explore their own creativity and develop new, original concepts for others to be nostalgic for. I understand the feeling of wanting the things you like to go on forever or at least for longer than they did, but they can't (and/or shouldn't) always do that and they'll still be there to revisit. It's so much more fun and interesting to see people share their own unique ideas, and in my experience it's more fun for the one doing it as well.
I think that more or less covers what I wanted to say, but I've never been great at getting everything out at once so feel free to leave replies if there's anything anyone wants to ask. Again, nice work on this, I think it's a solid retrospective and it even managed to make me a little nostalgic for that period of my life.

I did not expect you to comment on this video, let alone watch it, but wow, what a great read your comment was.
Thank you so much for the feedback! I’m really thankful to have gotten your perspective on the series and what you remember about your thought process at the time. It may not be to same extent, but I know what it’s like to create things at a younger age that embarass you to this day. However, I think it’s something that every artist has to experience at least once in order to grow.
But at the same time, I can’t help but to find your work incredibly charming. Monster School as a concept feels like something I would’ve created with my toys in my bedroom, and I appreciate how genuine it is to watch. It’s a shame to hear how much of a toll its popularity took on you at a younger age, but I’m happy that you’re taking it in stride rather than forcing your old work into the ground. I’ve seen creators do that before, and it’s never fun for the artists involved, or the audience who still care about your work.
Part of me will always view your animations as a young artist who had fun creating whatever they wanted to in the moment. And, I know I may be projecting a bit of my own experiences onto yours, but I take solace in knowing that I wasn’t the only one embarassing myself online for the sake of growth. I’m glad that you used Monster School as a step in advancing as an artist. Thank you for creating a series that resonated with so many people, and I hope that you continue to push yourself even further to be your best self!
(Also, would you mind if I pinned your comment? I know that you said “feel free to leave replies”, but I’d rather you not be bombarded with too many questions or inarticulate comments if you’re not comfortable with that.)

@@theoriginalalex Yeah, I genuinely believe that we all need to normalize being cringe. Everyone has, or at least should have, phases in their lives they come to regret but which were nevertheless essential for their development. Some people are just more public about it than others. Especially since the internet became a thing, which I largely consider a net positive because it's made it easier than ever to realize that you're not alone. Whatever problems you have are most definitely experienced by many others too, and you can find relief in that and exchange solutions with each other. I also do agree that seeing other people embarrass themselves can be weirdly inspirational. I've had similar experiences looking at others' work where I think to myself "Man, this isn't very good at all... But people seem to like it anyway and the creator seems happy", which is very comforting and helps somewhat with my crippling perfectionism.
And sure, go right ahead and pin it. Years of running my RUclips channel has rendered me immune to discomfort from questions and inarticulate comments, no worries there.

I have several good monster school creators to recommend:
Rancher6 His monster school is the closest in style to willcraft. However, it is better because it has lore and more fluid animation.
Bgzar: He is trying to make monster school into the next annoying villagers. His monster school is more like a plot driven fantasy story than anything else.
Ghost block: He is generally just funny. If you want a good laugh, his video should be your go to option.
Rat kidz: His animation is the most detailed out of all the animators I have seen. Also, he kinda follows a enemy of the week format that can genuinely pull on your heartstrings.

Which I'd say is a breath of fresh air considering 95% of the time Monster School is talked about on RUclips, it's always presented in bad light (for obvious and understandable reasons) but the original series is barely touched by most videos in actual depth, other than that it was the first.

Tbh, no one ever did Minecraft School as well as Willcraft, I absolutely adore that series.
(granted, this is probably because he was the OG creator of the series, so he must've known how to make it work, but I still stand by that. Also this might be since the rest of MS-related stuff I've seen on YT were too "cringy YT Kids-esque material")

My friend and I always made Minecraft comics in school, and one series I did was about Monster School, and the concept alone has inspired me to create so many other things with similar concepts, like monsters in casual environments like this, going to school.

Reason animation nowadays aren’t on level is just simply that almost all of the ones I’ve seen (sitting with my 8 year old cousin) are shorts which naturally just have exadurated plots and ridiculous amounts of sound affects and trying to piggy back on the latest trend in anything whereas the original was just it wasn’t trying to do anything other than show some mobs being in school with actually decent plot progression

    • @Turbulation1
      @Turbulation1 11 месяцев назад +3

Also because most of those creators don't even try with the animation, since it takes very little skill to make minecraft animations on mineimator, unless you wanted them to be genuinely good.
Willcraft also used Mineimator for monster school back then, but at least he tried to improve with it, and that's also with the limitations that came with the program being relatively new to the minecraft community.

Yes, these memes are cringe. Tho I have to disagree about skibibi toilet. Skibibi toilet was was supposed meme from the start, but how many people like this so much that Creator made more. And he changed to meme to effort lore which many love it. If he doesn't change and keep the meme, I can be sure that they will hate it even more. Baller and grimace shake don't. They just memes that everybody hate it overtime and called it cringe. (I still respect your comment. Sorry about the grammar.)

Besides Willcraft, I vaguely remember another Minecraft animator, not much really, but what I can recall is that their skin has glasses which were just white scares, those stereotypical ones a lot of skins with glasses have, I remember they were working on a hunger games-esque video that had a lot of unfinished lighting, I sadly can't recall the name of the channel but I watched it around the same time as Willcraft
it's kind of a shame how mamy great Minecraft animators, who's passion was their mark, have been forgotten to time
