    Those Canadian pieces are really nice! I don't think I've ever seen one in the wild. I buy and sell lots of cast iron. I bid recently on a lot of skillets, 2 of which look like BSR. One is a #7, Red Mtn? And the other is a #10, later Century Series from what I can tell from the photos! I will pick them up tomorrow at the auction site. The listing stated no cracks or bowing, so that is good. I can deal with rust! As to shipping, I usually use flatter boxes like the Priority B (16x14x3) and other variants of that box to ship my cast iron. I use pool noodles, shrink/bubble wrap, and lots of filler. The only time I use a larger box eBay is when combining more than one piece which is hardly ever! I often tape the whole box so it can't have a hole poked through it (also protects cast iron from getting wet if package sits in rain for while). These boxes many times will quality for cubic shipping rates from USPS and I can offer economy shipping for my buyers while still having enough $$ to send Priority. Anyway, I am OCD on packing, but better safe than sorry and I love happy customers! 😁

      Yes, it is always better to overdo it when it comes to packaging and yes the flatter style boxes are really handy.

    I usually always buy mine from Florida cast iron finds on Etsy. They have a great selection at a great price and offer free shipping. Always shipped well with pool noodles and arrive perfect. I live in rural Alaska and getting here is a long way from FL so I know they do a great job. Hard to find cast iron up here and these guys have done we well over and over. Maybe 15 pieces I’ve bought from them.

      I little bit of oil will go a long way when it comes to very hot cookware. Especially when searing meats.

    for you folks that are having sticking problems, you are probably starting out too hot and you need to warm up your lard first before adding your eggs or meat.......

    I have had one pan packed in such a way that the box encircled the pan, but the handle stuck out of a hole and the mail sent it as is. I’ve also had a costumer return a pan with a “crack” which I haven’t been able to find.

    Another question, if you have a piece known to have been used for a lead mould can it be restored if it has gone through electrolysis? It's an old biscuit pan from Waterman.

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 года назад

      Once a piece has been tested positive for lead contamination, it can no longer be safely used again.

    • @crewnail1763
      @crewnail1763 3 года назад

      Thanks, I was hoping restoring it may remove any lead contamination. I may still restore it and hang it up.

    Could you help a new collector? My friend passed away at age 85 His wife gave me some nice pieces he intended to restore.One is a HEAVY spider skillet with a prefect fitting Dutch oven type lid. No gate mark, but she said his mother cooked on it when he was a kid. Handle has raised 12 IN marking. Lid is marked 12. Both might weigh 15 pounds? What could this be?

    GSW? In my line of work,that’s Gun Shot Wound.... what does it stand for in the cast iron world?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 года назад +1

      The GSW stands for General Steel Works. They formed by the combining of several foundries in On. Canada around 1927.

      It takes a good bit of trading and swapping around but the hobby does actually cover most of its own expenses. The hard part is not being able to keep all of the pieces.

    Do you know who I can send my families 100 yr old cast iron to restore..it has a coating on half and inch thick..adding to its heaviness.

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 года назад

      A believe that it would be more cost effective for you to set up a lye tank or do a easy off oven spray cleaner stripping. The shipping can get quite expensive.

    I'm about to purchase a portable induction cooktop. So will the ring on the bottom of my skillet be an issue as far as even heating?

    • @johnharbaugh9471
      @johnharbaugh9471 3 года назад

      I use lodge unmarked with ring marks at 9, 12 & 3 o'clock, mine works just fine on induction cook top.

    • @castIroncookware

    I’ve got an unbranded cast iron skillet which I’ve sanded so smooth you can skate on it. But I can’t fry eggs in it they ALWAYS stick. I’ve looked at all the videos following all the information just doesn’t work for me I can do anything else in it except fry eggs?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 года назад

      It is very hard for seasoning to adhere to a pan that has been sanded but making sure that your pan is sufficiently heated and use plenty of oil should help with the fried eggs.

    Just ordered two Easy Beesy, I have a question about preventing flash rust. Do you recommend using Easy beesy or just something like grape seed oil after the pieces are down to raw iron?

    • @castIroncookware
      @castIroncookware  3 года назад

      When the piece is still wet from washing with dish soap after striping, apply oil or Easy Beezy before drying to avoid flash rust.

    • @crewnail1763
      @crewnail1763 3 года назад +1

      I bought some grape seed oil, may use it for the flash rust and keep the easy beesy for seasoning. I also picked up some Arm and Hammer washing powder and plan on making an electrolysis tank, seems like it is the better way to restore. Thanks for the reply.
