hilariously enough it's still undervalued. He's so fucking brilliant. We really are lucky that he's so willing to share his ideas with other people (after profiting handsomely from them first)
Number 1and 10 resonate with me the most. The US education system focuses too much on competition and not enough on innovation. Everyone needs to find their own path and not follow the crowd.
This video is great here are some notes I thought were important 0:20 - You are the entrepreneur of your life. You can decide what you will and won’t prioritize. 0:40 - Do one thing uniquely well - the top technology companies are doing something significantly better than all their competition 1:06 - What do you know that no one else knows or understands? What great business exists that no one is building 1:30 - Make sure people are aligned. What are people’s incentives? Formal alignment - incentives and informal alignment where people would want to work together 2:58 - Aim for monopoly - so far differentiated from the competition it is not competing 4:27 - You start a company to solve the problem that governmental for-profit or a nonprofit entity can not solve. 5:12 - Value substance over status - I would ask a lot more questions as to why I am doing these things? -- too much-being drive-by prestige and status 6:31 - People’s identities get so wrapped up in the things they compete for 6:54 - Competition is a double-edged sword - when you compete for status you will get very good at what you are competing over - but you will always narrow your focus to beating the people around you. This comes at the high price of losing sight at the larger picture. 7:15 - a general theme I would suggest is all trends are overrated be weary of things like SaaS Enterprise software and Cloud computing - these are buzzwords that offer a tell - the tell being they are one company in a large category they are not differentiated. 8:29 - if you can describe what a company is doing by referencing buzz word s it is a sign this is a pretty bad idea 10:45 - we think of advertising as something afflicts others but not ourselves 10:58 - there is a tiny door off the beaten path with a tiny door that everyone is trying to rush through and around the corner, there might be a secret gate no one is taking and you should always find the secret path and take it
Stop with the over the top idealization bullshit. He’s human. You’re human. Learn from him and get to work. Drooling on someone’s balls this hard doesn’t lead to action. It just gives you a perfect excuse to do nothing since you’ll never measure up.
The top 10 that resonates the most for me is #10. It is the courage that it takes to follow that path and be actively seeking it that separate those who have the stomach to be an entrepreneur. So many times, we are called crazy, among other things, for not following and I only hope I get to be as good at it as Peter Theil. My wish list would be for a few more women that may not be pop culture, but are doing amazing things. For example: Melissa Jawaharlal, Ria Persad, Arielle Jackson, Molly Graham, Tamara Stevens.
Please make a video about Sir Ronald Cohen, perhaps more low-key than Thiel, but a man who epitomizes entrepreneurship and has been behind some of the greatest business and social developments.
2. *Do one thing uniquely well*. Diversification is a wonderful way to gain attention in your chosen industry and to add alternative revenue streams, offering robust options and solutions in a form of a product or service. However, if you are not known to be outstanding in at least one aspect of your business, you'll never have that instantaneous go-to reaction you'd want your new or repeating customers to have. You want to be installed in the masses psyche, that knee-jerk reaction that they will want to choose you over a competing business that doesn't execute tasks quite like you can. Consistency, originality, determination, relatability and a deep understanding of your client base will help you get there. #BTA58
Thank you Taheerah! I agree that businesses should take more "personal" reflection to determine how best to engage with the market and provide something that makes them stand out in a wash of clones, but competition is healthy in that it allows you to gauge how well you're responding to your audience by measure of contrast in terms of how much interest your business is receiving by comparison. A good way of terming it is "Inventive relatability". #BTA58
I agree with you that it's hard to fully understand your competitors motivations apart from wanting to make money! This is why over the past decade or so, there has been an increase in the implementation of psychological processes into the marketing of the product or service in which you're trying to sell. A very successful business who is wanting to out-do their direct competitors needs to know ,at least in my opinion, their competitors businesses inside out in order to circumvent and adjust their approach to market, much like a game of chess. By all means, have your USP and allow every marketing aspect flow through it so you can stand out in the crowd and find that niche that's yet to be filled and capitalize on it. It's as much to do about that, than it is doing things differently. Nurture failure and expect it out of your employees to show them the value in the lesson learned. Do the unexpected, do the one thing that your customer never thought you were capable of doing because it's not seen to be the "Thing to do" in your industry. It's not about working harder than your competitor, it's just working a lot smarter. To tie the original point back into what we were talking about, one of the most effective ways of making you stand out in a busy, more than likely cluttered industry is to approach things with unexpected deliverance of a product or service that supersedes that of what came before it. Many want to jump on the band wagon and ride it, very few wish to re-invent the wheel it's attached to. #BTA58
Thank you Taheerah, that's sweet of you to say! I agree that given the right environment on RUclips, it can be hugely beneficial in finding those you're in alignment with. You work with branding copy? That's awesome. You're someone who I wouldn't mind talking to in the future, perhaps collaboratively? As a designer, our roles cross paths often and knowing a great copy writer is often hard to come by in my experience! #BTA58
He did not cofound PayPal with Max Levchin an Elon Musk. He founded PayPal with a bunch of other guys including Max levchin, and later merged with Elon Musks company. You're not wrong, just kinda... not completely right. Just wanted to say that, hope I don't seem like the biggest jerk. :)
Spencer Crane True. The company was Confinity but afaik PayPal was their service, and they named their new merged company PayPal. So yes, technically he didn't found PayPal, but Confinity, yeah.
great video.2) do one thing uniquely well 4) aim for monopoly 6) value substance over status 8) trends are over rated 9) don't dwell on the past 10) find the secret path. thanks for the upload #bta4
one that I liked a lot is the one about not dwelling on the past... it's really true that learning from failure is somewhat overrated as sometimes you choose to pursue something and too many factors were not the right ones as he said: maybe the people involved, the timing, the political situation, or any other internal or external factors can lead you to fail in your business or any other goal for that matter. I loved the part where he said that the best thing to do is to try something else, with different features, different variables, instead of trying to figure out the one thing that went wrong and failing again, it's a better option to try something different altogether
I like Peter Thiel. I understand his take on monopolies and competition, and it's great advice I'm sure, but some of the world's largest companies were able to achieve world dominance selling a products that aren't necessarily different or better in the midst of fierce competition and flooded markets. Also he's a billionaire, so he's preaching on the grandest of scales,. I'm sure owning a successful restaurant in Chicago isn't going to make you the next Thiel, but such an enterprise could make someone comfortably wealthy.
I strongly disagree with his view on monopolies and competition, but otherwise great advices and video ! His point about failure (starting at 8:44) is pretty interesting and out-of-the-box.
Thanks for a great video. A way you can make similar videos even better in the future: the clips where Thiel was speaking could use time stamps. Like a little text in the top right corner that tells us when he said what hes saying in the clip.
"What great business exists that nobody is building?" I don't know if that's profound or a statement that can be easily answered with, "Well, duh!" My favorite is that trends are over rated. What he says about failure is interesting.
Question: My takaway from the 9th advice was to spend energy to avoid failure and isolate variables to make learning from them easier. I would love to understand why this was summarized as "Don't dwell on the past." Because I could just be looking at it from the wrong perspective. Alternitively, I'm not upset if it is simply a dodge of the core idea he explained, if you Evan don't agree with that failure is bad. If that is the case, I would love to hear a direct counter-argument to his point. The fear of failure is undoubtedly damaging, but almost all fear is damaging. Is embracing failure a good thing?
Best bet to reach out to Evan and ask him your question directly would be on one of his Instagram live streams. He does Instagram Lives every workday @evancarmichael :) #BTA1410 Veljko
His book "Zero to One" is a good book, one huge drawback is that the book is about 200 pages long, the really important reads are around 100-120 pages and the rest is a lot of boring blurb about off-topic subjects
Ugg, whenever I listen to a Peter Thiel videos, I think about how if I would have looked up who the Theil Fellowship recipients were and found out about Vitalic Buterin, I likely would have bought Etherium at
Fear, greed and deceit needs to go, as a longtime, global set of values. Instead we need a new culture based on mercy, compassion and honesty. I may not succeed in my lifetime, but it is an endeavor worth doing.
As an entrepreneur myself I don't agree with some of his points at all -- but that may not be Thiel's fault. It could be that Thiel's short points could be better explained if made longer. For example I regard the pain of failure as a most effective teacher. 'Failure' is used in business, science, childhood, the military and direct marketing, for example, to discover how to move forward.
Wow, he sounds sooo similar like Elon Musk! Same "stuttering", similar ways of expressing things (for what I know about him now). Thanks for this video! :)
I am only interested in how he made his fortune. He is brilliant because he is a serial entrepreneur, just like other paypal mafia such as Elon Musk and Reid Hoffman. Sorry, I am not interested in charity, scandals, how many yachts, how big his house, how many mistresses etc. .. these have nothing to do with making money. To squander money and do stupid things are quite easy.
I have written 10 eBooks in amazon.com on self made billionaires. I only ask one question.. how did this guy or gal made so much money? Try to think deeper. You are interested in making money Philosophy, scandals, charity, sex ual orientation, political orientation, .. are irrelevant I can easily write 20 eBooks on this.. without scandals, gossip and political correctness Time is your most valuable resources.. energy is your second most valuable resources.. please don't waste it on Hulk Hogan..it is brain power that you should aspire to.. not muscle power
Then please repeat your viewpoint 1000 times. or start a campaign to save Hulk Hogan's character.. I find here in America, for every person interested in becoming entrepreneurs, there are 25 who are interested only in Zombies, Vampires, Pirates, Captain America Iron Man etc.. Hulk Hogan even looks and talks like a Pulp Fiction character..
I am 100% sure you are not a refugee immigrant who have to wash dishes and work in Seven Eleven for years. I bet you are living comfortably with your rich parents , watching 4 hours of TV a day , wrestling, football, vampires and you care a lot about scandals Now, start a scandal sheet, that would be a good business ideas
America is famous for success spruikers, Art Linkletter, Zig Ziggler used to do the convention style interface, for example. Things like: show up, show up on time, dress to play etc. His audience roared with laughter when he said show up, his response was, "don't laugh some people don't show up." One fundamental issue is that unsuccessful people tend to have more children than successful ones. Welfare must have lifetime limits and not increase after the third child. All valuable. But when one needs to create a monopoly to be successful one has to really wonder what is going on. Monopolies are supposed to be broken up by judicial power. I have been investing 20+ hours a week trying to educate myself about the USA from another country, post Trump. I am thinking more and more that the political power system is more unbalanced than balanced and has deteriorated so much that it will take decades to repair; if ever, since the system has been weaponized by Obama, the media, mega wealthy and corrupt politicians.
Hate to be that guy, but Peter Thiel's Zero To One really inspired me. I made an animated book summary and it would mean the world if even just one of you guys could check it out.

0:40 - Do one thing uniquely well - the top technology companies are doing something significantly better than all their competition
1:06 - What do you know that no one else knows or understands? What great business exists that no one is building
1:30 - Make sure people are aligned. What are people’s incentives? Formal alignment - incentives and informal alignment where people would want to work together
2:58 - Aim for monopoly - so far differentiated from the competition it is not competing
4:27 - You start a company to solve the problem that governmental for-profit or a nonprofit entity can not solve.
5:12 - Value substance over status - I would ask a lot more questions as to why I am doing these things? -- too much-being drive-by prestige and status
6:31 - People’s identities get so wrapped up in the things they compete for
6:54 - Competition is a double-edged sword - when you compete for status you will get very good at what you are competing over - but you will always narrow your focus to beating the people around you.
8:29 - if you can describe what a company is doing by referencing buzz word s it is a sign this is a pretty bad idea
10:45 - we think of advertising as something afflicts others but not ourselves
10:58 - there is a tiny door off the beaten path with a tiny door that everyone is trying to rush through and around the corner, there might be a secret gate no one is taking and you should always find the secret path and take it
Glad that you liked it - Nina

dude this guy is so smart you can tell he has to slow his brain down to be able to speak

Same as Elon Musk, their brain goes too fast and the words can't catch it

@@MrClockw3rk Well said.
The sort of stuff that makes me want to puke..... Elon is a fraudulent guy and it will come out soon.

How to apply that in business. Not everyone can build a zero to one product. Not everyone is tech guy.

Thank you for sharing , Evan! Rule N. 9 - Don't dwell on the past . It is true. Dwelling on the past is a waste of time and energy.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. Indeed, we can learn from the past but don't dwell on it. Thank you for watching! #BTA146 Shine
The top 10 that resonates the most for me is #10. It is the courage that it takes to follow that path and be actively seeking it that separate those who have the stomach to be an entrepreneur. Fear, greed and deceit needs to go, as a longtime, global set of values. Instead we need a new culture based on mercy, compassion and honesty. I may not succeed in my lifetime, but it is an endeavor worth doing.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts and for watching George. #BTA539 Shine
This is epic

As an entrepreneur myself I don't agree with some of his points at all -- but that may not be Thiel's fault. It could be that Thiel's short points could be better explained if made longer. For example I regard the pain of failure as a most effective teacher. 'Failure' is used in business, science, childhood, the military and direct marketing, for example, to discover how to move forward.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts peter. :) Agree...Failure is an effective teacher. #Believe #BTA548 Shine
I would like to see your top 10 rules from Ryan Allis :) Great video that has helped me question the status quo.

Wow, he sounds sooo similar like Elon Musk! Same "stuttering", similar ways of expressing things (for what I know about him now). Thanks for this video! :)

That's called Aspergers.
Being super polished articulate is over valued. Complex intelligent thoughts are more difficult to articulate and simple thoughts are easy.

Here is one of best brain! And very refreshing! #BTA1
+Paul Chan :) Thanks. #BTA39 Nina
You are interested in making money
Philosophy, scandals, charity, sex ual orientation, political orientation, .. are irrelevant
I can easily write 20 eBooks on this.. without scandals, gossip and political correctness
Time is your most valuable resources.. energy is your second most valuable resources.. please don't waste it on Hulk Hogan..it is brain power that you should aspire to.. not muscle power
I bet you are living comfortably with your rich parents , watching 4 hours of TV a day , wrestling, football, vampires
and you care a lot about scandals
Now, start a scandal sheet, that would be a good business ideas
America is famous for success spruikers, Art Linkletter, Zig Ziggler used to do the convention style interface, for example. Things like: show up, show up on time, dress to play etc. His audience roared with laughter when he said show up, his response was, "don't laugh some people don't show up."
One fundamental issue is that unsuccessful people tend to have more children than successful ones.
How to find the big ideas for a business
Very good upload
+emmanuel hermanez Thanks. #BTA39 Nina
Hate to be that guy, but Peter Thiel's Zero To One really inspired me. I made an animated book summary and it would mean the world if even just one of you guys could check it out.

And therefore, what will you do if you don't have the answer yet? For the sake of Oneself, humanity, and immortality, from the ancient Chinese Secret Wisdom Tradition, what are the five kinds of most prosperous, most powerful knowledge, and wisdom that every individual could and should possess?
