I Entered The British Trials Nationals On A Dirt Jump Bike!

- I didn't really plan on entering the national championships on this bike but when I saw this comp advertised I couldn't resist! It's certainly a good test to see if a dirt jump bike could be used as a trials bike and without giving too much away I had way more fun than I ever expected!
I forgot to give thanks to my brother at the end of the video so I'll do it here instead...Rob, thanks so much for hanging around and being my cameraman for the day, it was a huge help!
Of course I also want to thank John, Euan and Luke for their company and of course the organisers, observers and course setter for their work making it all happen!
Hopefully this will give you some inspiration to give trials a try even if you don't have a dedicated bike.

I wish I'd known this was on,I'd have popped along! Haven't seen John or Andrei for years.when DJ was killed I pretty much stopped riding,so I haven't seen anyone since about '07 which was one of (if not the last) of the memorial rides in mine and DJs home town.Bumped into wheeler a few times, and saw Matt Berridge at reading festival,but that's about it. Would love to catch up with the guys again. Might even dust off the old Curtis T1 comp!

Trials on a dirt jump bike... Well, that's what we rode trials on years ago, dirt jump and dual slalom frames. Who here remembers the old DMR Sidekick and Azonic DS1?

I'm glad you chose a more appropriate category this time around. The categories distinguish a riders skill level, not the bike they choose to ride.

This looks like good times! The disc riding is definitely more pleasant over rim brake, i wish it was a thing on comp bikes. I think you're going to have a blast on the streets with that bike.
Podium on the “wrong bike” = awesomesauce!!! Way to go!!! I did this for three seasons in open/pro/expert singlespeed XC racing, against all odds. The “wrong” bike = the “right” bike if you are comfortable with it and are competitive. (I did this on a fully rigid fatbike which weighed roughly 11.3 kilos)

doing something similar just picked up a chromag monk frame in the xtra long size. It's a bit of a parts bin build, throwing a set of arcade bars on, front brake, etc. Big change though, I'm throwing on gears, I have a 7 speed dh derailleur, kinda like the old days when comps required you to keep a geared drive-train on. I'll probably have to give up my barspin ambitions depending on how I mount the shifter but at-least I can have some trials gears and some dj/street gears.

Well done Ali. Props for just giving it a go, once again on a non trials bike without much, if any time on it before hand. Big question is though....Did you put any scratches in that beautiful paint job? :-D
Just fiy, I worked with those white plastic poles making fences for events, you know arenas for kids electric keeps and pathways around trampolines n such so people don’t come too close.
They are super sketchy to fall on, some of them sit super hard in ground with the spike and you can easily break a bone on them and they won’t even bend slightly. The hooks on them also sometimes are so sharp they can cut fabric or skin.
Just weird to me organisers used those.

Great result and ride on a dirt jump. Kudos you show all the results, as the encouragement of the younger riders pays dividends. Trials parks are always tight set sections, as I found a natural course can give you a bit more room and not as exhausting. But then again, this was a national champ round. What line do the Seniors ride?

You definitely had the nicest bike there, was painful to hear it scrape the rock. I have a custom frame coming, sort of a dj/trials hybrid with a longer reach. Planning to try a suspension fork and bigger tires to save my geriatric joints, so I was really curious how yours would work out.

I think i mostly been riding and bike-setup been towards dirt/street/trial rather than pure trial, its a bit more versatile riding

It takes pretty serious skills to make this look that easy. Do you think this bike would be a better for street trials than an observed comp? Also, do you just have a tall stack, or are you running a higher stem? I'm building a dirtjumper street trails rig, and this part has me a little stuck. Thanks!

what gearing are you using?
Hi Ali, I note there are some mangled-looking names in the Patreon credits which may be due to use of a font lacking a large enough character set. Or possibly copying and pasting through a program using the wrong encoding. Seems to be names with accented characters or entirely different languages.
If the names aren't meant to look like that, I'd try some of the other common fonts you have first. Helvetica or Arial, for their ubiquity. Failing that, a Google Font that supports other languages might be the go.
Have you considered using a rigid fork on that bike? I know some of The Rise guys run their DJs with rigid forks.

Streettrials wise the Inspired Flow is around that budget and is an excellent bike!

Nice! I hope you didn't scratch the amazing paint job too much. There are a few women taking the points (referees or whatever you call those), but are there any women competing?
I’ve watched Ali at comps for years, and done many hours on duty as an ‘observer’, but while watching this vid I was struck by how much upper body strength is needed to lift and jump through the sections, certainly at this venue. Although I am very much for equal ops I think the number of women possessing this kind of physical strength are few and far between. There are so many different disciplines in biking and perhaps female riders prefer to use their strength and talents on two wheels in other forms.
Not "street-trials" but "dirt-trials" bike :)
