    A caught fish is a caught fish, fowl or fairly hooked. Unless there’s a stipulation in the tournament rules, I wouldn’t worry about it. We’re too honest, Skinner. I used to call penalties on myself when I golfed competitively.

    Here in Hampton VA the flounder around shore have been tiny. I caught 3 yesterday and my buddy caught a couple, and others were caught on the pier. I didn't see any over 10". My buddy caught a keeper in May when the minimum was 16". Now it's 17.5" and I feel like catching a keeper is a serious challenge without a boat. Changing the size during the year is silly in my opinion, but it's better than NC. They're not having a recreational flounder season at all this year. We can keep them all year in VA, if we can get a legal one.
    No sea robbins? That's a blessing in itself.

    if you get the fish in the boat, it's a catch! even if it's foul hooked, you know it was coming after your bait. you did the work, you got the interest, and you hooked em! I've had flurries, especially during slack or the very end of the tide, where it seems like the fish just lay on the jig and end up foul hooked.
    regardless of how you hook it, you still have to fight it off the bottom, get it in the net, and on the boat. it's a valid catch in my book!

    Talking about other boats crowding ?
    I can come to an empty body of water and pick a spot maybe start catching fish. When other boats see the net, with an hour you’re surrounded by boats. So bail out and move,,, find some fish someone sees the net, and you’re surrounded by boats again…
    Repeat,repeat,repeat
    Same thing with Hunting. When someone sees you setup,, you got others within 300 yards within hours,,, it’s very frustrating and negatively affects both groups success and quality outing.
    We joke that amongst us experienced folks that we spend more time working to avoid others than working to find successful spots.

    If the tournament rules say it’s a legal catch then I don’t see the issue. They get hooked outside the mouth all the time and it’s not giving you an unfair advantage since everyone else is going to keep one like that too since it’s part of the rules. People often have an unfounded and biased system of ethics when it comes to fishing. Inherently, mortality is part of fishing even with catch and release (discard mortality is more significant than most people would like to acknowledge). You’re better off keeping a potentially injured fish that might later suffer from post release mortality. In my opinion, releasing a foul hooked fish doesn’t make fishing more ethical. It’s fishing-the goal is to catch fish. There’s no real reason that it’s more ethical for them to be hooked in the mouth vs. a fish that attempted to eat the jig and got hooked just outside the mouth if your intention is to keep and eat it.

      It's not like intentionally snagging fish. People used to "snitch" snook in FL during really cold weather because they get really slow and swim in shallow canals. It had to be banned a long time ago because it was so easy. That kind of thing is wrong, in my opinion. But hooking a fish in the head that tries to eat your bait isn't cheating. It's not intentional. There's no attempt to cheat.

      @@JohnSkinnerFishingwhen I was in Sweden I saw a whole bunch of different kinds of flat fish. Some were more round like sole and I saw some that looked like the ones you catch. They have halibut too, I've seen videos of people spearing big ones in Norway. I'm thinking they could have some different ones than you're used to farther north in the States too.

    The IGFA rules call for a disqualification if the fish is intentionally foul hooked. Let your conscience be your guide, personally I would be good with keeping and entering it if it was head hooked. Tail hooked, no.

    In a contest I think it should be in the mouth only

  • @peterparsons7141
    @peterparsons7141 24 дня назад +1

    Fowl hooking fish is intentionally striking/targeting the body of the fish with a hook. An angler is hitting the fish,
    Not entice the fish to hit the hook.
    In sport fishing an angler is luring a fish to HIT a disguised or baited hook, very different from snag fishing where a fisher is striking a fish with a hook.

  • @davidwalters7856
    @davidwalters7856 24 дня назад

    To me, it’s easy. That fish was foul hooked and should have been released. Anything outside the mouth is foul hooked. Anything foul hooked is not legitimately caught and should be let go. This always applies. I think John leans this way and that’s why he felt so guilty.

    • @JohnSkinnerFishing
      @JohnSkinnerFishing  24 дня назад +4

      Thanks for that viewpoint. I only felt uneasy with respect to the contest. The fish was caught legally, and in this case where I'm looking to eat the catch, I see no point in throwing back a fish with a body injury. This was actually the first fish I kept for the table since sheepshead fishing in Florida in the winter.
