A technical milestone in the history of Amiga Games. And a wonderful artistic achievement. This game still looks and sounds amazing thirty years after its release.
an Amiga 500 equipped with Lionheart, Golden Axe, Gods, Flashback, Superfrog and Shadow Fighter could be not a world but a universe of happiness for a boy of the time. For me it was like that, good times, beautiful video
Visually, there's a nice mix of colour gradients in the background, line scrolling for all the clouds and hills and ground, a couple of full overlapping actual background layers, and palette swapping for the water that all add up to a nice effect.
Impressive skills on this impressive amiga game. It was far too difficult for me to handle back in the day. I never made it out of the swamps. The graphics looks stunning even today. All the colors and details really make it shine for an Amiga 500 game.
It was a difficult game but back then almost all of us used a joystick and we all know now that they were crap to play games like this. I still remember the difference when I got an arcade stick, quick shot maverick one. And to think that this games runs on a stock A500 and its just 4 disks. One of the best games on my list.
This is just proper Amiga game that actually makes use of the hardware. Amiga custom chips were one of the greatest achievements in the history of computers. Too bad C= didn't invest into Amiga development to push these designs further. Newer Amigas needed more audio channels and some enhancements for better 3D graphics capabilities, because OCS/ECS/AGA chips were designed with 2D graphics in mind, so they were struggling with even vector graphics and Wolfenstein like raycasted graphics. Using some tricks made 'Doom-like' games possible, but the graphics were rather low-res and the rooms fell empty, sacrificing additional objects in games. The vector based 3D graphics were quite slow on low-end Amigas and needed accelerators to make any sense. In 2D graphics departament Amiga was only limited by the amount of memory and floppy disks. 1MB in A500 wasn't too much and 2MB im A1200 was a joke, because you couldn't use full capabilities of the AGA chip with only 2MB of RAM
I was just working on a video segment for this game and came across your gameplay running through it on Lionhard. Controls definitely took getting used to and then some... your playthrough was super helpful in giving me some strategies for a lot of the game. Great gameplay and thank you for posting this. If you like, I'd gladly highlight some of your gameplay on Lionhard and give you a shout out and link. I'm sure many of my subs will be hype to emulate and play this after I show it and may be looking for a good playthrough for some tips. If you see my comment and are OK with it let me know. I'll make sure to show off some of your gameplay and send some people your way, as it definitely helped me learn the game.
Thanks for watching, glad you found this playthrough helpful. Great game, it sure takes some time and effort, but once you get used to the controls, it's very enjoyable. I've been a fan of your channel ever since I did some "research" of sorts in retro shoot'em'ups, and found your very high quality and informative videos. Yeah sure, it would be great if you included clips from this playthrough in your content, thanks for taking the time to comment. I haven't been too active in youtube lately, but I still watch, and appreciate it when some of these videos seem to be worthwhile 🙂
@@silenig Thanks for the reply! I'll definitely make sure to show off a good bit of your gameplay and link to your full playthrough in the description too. If I can send some people your way to check out this run and others on your channel, I'm happy to do it.
Lately I have played that game again after almost 30 yrs I guess....U playing that game you may could thing it's easy to pass but I know how hard it is....amazing skills bruh
Gameplay might be basic compared to recent games, and yet, I find it more fascinating. There was something magical and even mystic about those games in the 90s. I don't feel that anymore. Modern games focus a lot on fun, graphics, gameplay, which is great, but the atmosphere/magic is lost.
You are absolutely right. Due to the limited technology at that time, the programmers made more effort elsewhere. That was often the atmosphere, art style and music. Back then, people had more courage to be creative because financial success wasn't as important as it is today.
This game looks to be inspired by the Psygnosis games *Barbarian* and *Shadow of the Beast* but it's still a cool game with nice animation and solid game play.
Sounds yes, but graphically Lionheart was among the best on the Amiga. Also had great sound and graphics Chaos Engine, Mr. Nutz, Shadow of the Beast II, Turrican II, Chuck Rock II.
I'd say the most visually impressive games on the Amiga are Lionheart, Agony, Elfmania, Ruff N Tumble, Kid Chaos, Risky Woods, Super Stardust and Flink.
Flink was the next game by the same artist as Lionheart (Henk Nieborg, now one of the best known pixel artists in the world). Leander is worth a mention as a beautiful and playable A500 game. Fire and Ice has its moments as well. And for art, graphics, and atmosphere, though not for gameplay, the first Shadow of the Beast game also needs to be mentioned.
... Great game in 2D... I' remember... it's for the old Amiga 500 (16 bit Commodore computer). It's an higth exemple of style: design, sound, etc., i't's beautiful arcade game!
"Drop us a few lines..." -- Ok, guys... i've played it in -90s and it was... it was... "masterpiece" is the word which isn't enough to show what i thought about it. )))) So... i've played pirate version and of course i have to pay for it now! Now there is the IT market over here and we have some political troubles again to buy and sell freely (yeah, the Beast-666 again do its bloody things over the World hiding the face over "green agenda") but that's not a problem. My fatty bank account is ready to pay off all the things i/ve got in childhood )))))))) let's do a donate round!
Seriously, the art in this game is so ridiculously gorgeous.
Yes it is
Thats the charm of European companies

In the Amiga 500 era it was one of my favorite jump and run games. Along with Golden Ax and the First Samurai

Amazing game and amazing run! Kudos, I played this a lot back in the day and I know how hard some stages and areas are.
Incredible game!! i played this game when i’m 17 years old. With and Amiga 500. A beautifull and artístic game..
An AAA game from 90's.
Love how he flies away giving the middle finger at the end.
Super gameplay sentyment i dzisiaj zagram na winUAE dzięki szefie super film i inspiracja. Pozdrawiam
Wow, the graphics in this game. So good and a lot of fun to play.
I've still got this game. I'm pretty sure it was one of the rare games that you could install on the hard disk. Saves loads of disk swaps 🙂👍
Lately I have played that game again after almost 30 yrs I guess....U playing that game you may could thing it's easy to pass but I know how hard it is....amazing skills bruh
best amiga graphic of all time
One of best Amiga games 😍
Incredible..

Modern games focus more on realism than anything else tbh
I like how this game has inertia, like Sonic ... actually the programmers were so good they could have easily made a perfect Sonic port.
Love it.. So the game has multiple endings?
One of hardest games to complete
I still have the original box😍😄
I'm curious as to how they managed the color gradient on enemies and platforms for the levels set in the swamp
Monochrome gradient, varied gradually from area to area using the copper, I think.
I... Love... this... GAME!
This game looks to be inspired by the Psygnosis games *Barbarian* and *Shadow of the Beast* but it's still a cool game with nice animation and solid game play.
Yeah, similar visual style but much better gameplay.
Great game. Did manage to get the best ending once..many years ago
Too bad you can not see smooth amiga scrolling in a youtube video. This game was just state of the art at it's release time.
You can. Set video to 1080p50, and your monitor to 50hz. Then it will be smooth :)
Hey how can I play this beauty on a modern day PC?
Thanks for any advice!
Are there any other Amiga games look and sound this good?
Sounds yes, but graphically Lionheart was among the best on the Amiga. Also had great sound and graphics Chaos Engine, Mr. Nutz, Shadow of the Beast II, Turrican II, Chuck Rock II.

@@psquaredish Brian The Lion looks quite nice too.
the AGA version is wonderful@@deceiver444

Makes your head ache trying to work out how they pulled it off. I wonder if alot of palette switching (down the screen) takes place on certain levels.
Yeah, I think on the fire level they are changing all of the scenery colours on every scan line.

You lost two swords. In secret level and on ship.
Absolutely fantastic spritework and music. Such a shame the gameplay is 'Super Mario with a sword'...
technically the best Amiga game so far. Wish they didn't close down and made Lionheart 2 AGA

Over 500 colours on Amiga 500 this game has a lot Copper colour map swaps.
Some weirdly mediocre looking levels here and there; quite the contrast to the rest of the levels in terms of graphics. Early created levels perhaps?
Good graphics but boring game
