Castle Dome and Vista Point ~ Castle Crags State Park (Hiking Trails in California)

Many times as we've driven I-5 near Dunsmuir, California, we've looked up and seen the most unusual rock formations. After some research, we learned these interesting rocks were part of Castle Crags State Park with a trail leading to the base of Castle Dome. We added it to our list of places to stop when driving from Washington to California.
Thanksgiving Day was the perfect time for a hike to the base of Castle Dome: the sky was clear, the sun shining bright, the road still open to Vista Point parking, and not very many people venturing out for a hike on a holiday. It was very cold and windy, but we're used to hiking in such conditions. This place is an excellent stop when passing through the area. We spent 5 hours in the park and still made it to our destination in central California before too late that night.
