- Aside from a billion decent accessories, Terraria offers 9 (and a half) different, elegant, and beautiful TRASH SHIELDS. Each one is different and special in its own way, HOWEVER, one thing unites them all... NONE of them can be called shields. Re-Logic... let us AT LEAST raise them up visually... enjoy! :)

Meanwhile, me using Shield of Cthulhu until Plantera and farming to get the Ankh Shield despite not even using it in every game

I never use ankh shield. Just use Shield of Cthulhu until the very end

You can bonk against anything with a hitbox, I know that, I have played terraria before, I was talking about actually going through an attack without taking damage, which as far as I know is exclusive to certain boss contact damage attacks

Yeah Parries generally provide immunity frames, so do other things, the shield is among other things, its a dash attack with Iframes
The defense thing was a joke
"Abusing immunity frames" is exactly what it is tho? The bonk has s so you don't take damage when using it. And you can exploit it by using it as you're about to take contact damage from a fast entity so they pass right through you before the Iframes end.

Parry, block or whatever you want to call it is using immunity frames and considering the shield of chuthlu can be obtained early and it's unique expert drop, otherwise if every shield has the blocking mechanic then it would lose the uniqueness and the ninja doge will be superior, the ankh shield is meant to be used as emergency kit for debuffs , the old ones army shield has some niece but doesn't have enough going for it, the products of the paladin s shield is meant for multiplayer due to the aggro and damage taken from your team, the cap shield is doing the best to show if there was actual blocking but other than that it's a vanity item for marvel fans , if you notice all of this shields have the ability to block directly or indirectly

I never said the other shields should also block damage? Hell I didn't mention them at all, so I have no idea how you even got the impression that I want them to get that feature.
I think the reworked shields should be a terraria two idea, or maybe even a separate stat for damage reduction
all shields should be able to parry (without brand of the inferno) to encourage getting close to your enemy in higher difficulties
copletely blocking damage would be op though

yeah, but shield of cthulhu, brand of the inferno, and the captain america shield (solar flare too?) are the only ones that can pull that off. they feel more like niche items that most dont use

Last time a checked the shield you made fun of is capable of blocking attacks with proper timing, and when holding the block button, grants you 20 defense
And gives you a 600% damage boost for your next attack
That shield is overpowered, when Skeletron Prime got me in a lock with his head I quickly grabbed it and managed to tank most of his attacks.
I think this would be overpowered as all hell. Only one weapon in the game has this ability, and thank God it's true melee. If it was a flail or fired a beam it has the potential to be one of the most OP weapons ever because of the 300% damage buff

also the damage buff is *400%*, and you can swap to a different melee weapon and apply the buff to that one
Melee is too easy and op. Its definitley the class for 12 year olds
honestly melee is just ok in higher difficulties, because most of the weapons don't have enough range or dps to go against bosses that can deal half your health in 2 seconds
Svings is right though. Only reason the Ankh shield is grinded for is because it cancels like 3/4 of all the debuffs, which is nifty but the shield part isnt really applied.

theres another reason but debatable since there's achievement for getting ankh shield
there is an actual sword in vanilla terraria which allows blocking and parrying, that being brand of the inferno from the old ones army event. it allows the player to parry/block which gives 20 defence by right click when equipping the melee
It's also really op, because a sucessful parry gives a huge damage buff on your next swing, regardless of which sword you swing.
I had a concept in my mind for shields where basically you can parry as seen with the SUS, and regular enemies would get knocked back, but when you parried a boss it'd knock YOU back, the damage the attack would have dealt translates to knockback taken, at a 4-1 ratio. That way there would be a downsider to you know, being immune to damage, especially if playing melee. Additionally you'd have to get the timing perfect to block at all.

Well the knockback thing kinda fits, and when the cobalt shield was introduced devs didn't have much experiance in coding. But Old One's Army can supply you with a weapon that allows you to use shields.

Sergant united shield and brand of the inferno do have a blocking mechanic, that, even though its actual uses are nichey is a lot of fun to play around with and the other shields should be reworked b, their example
isn't that parry
One example is the enraged duke fight, where the sergeant united shield shines the most (no armor no buffs) it's truly one of the most shield ever
The only shield I personally use is the shield of cthulhu since it actually has a "parrying" mechanic (in the form of immunity frames after the "bonk")
It's less if a parry and more like ramming, "dodging" and adds more movement. But there is a Parry weapon, event tho it's a sword.

saw only 1 comment about my beloved brand of the inferno and it's a shame, also just trashing the shield that actually let's you parry is super unfair, I can only agree with the last part about adding actual mechanics instead of.. Yeah... that...

For me, the shields could have a chance to block a certain percent of the damage of an attack, similar to how the Master Ninja Gear has a chance to dodge an attack
A final update will not be completed without some of items to be reworked with unique gimmicks
I wish that you at least mentioned the brand of the inferno in this video as it has an actual parry mechanic using shields
One of the shields he showed actually have a parry mechanic which is the Sergeant United Shield.
You can completely avoid damage when bonking with dashing...
Also left clicking with the Brand of the Inferno with the correct timing can make you dodge any hit.
Fair point for you though, these two blocks are very hard to pull out, and an easier way to block with shield could be a nice addition.

This is quite a valid point that i overlooked. However, from the short scene of what the mod does in the video, i can see it being very much abused heavily. What about the introduction of stamina? Blocking attacks uses stamina depending on how much damage/knock back it does. Lower the stamina, slower the regeneration. If it reaches zero, theres an exhaustion debuff that prevents the player from gaining stamina for 3s.
I've played the mod. Raising your shield gives you like half a second to parry (1 sec CD, so no spam), followed by the exact same shield block that the Sergeant United Shield does. You can't attack while blocking, and your movement is dramatically reduced.

Funny how the closest thing we have to avoiding full attacks with a shield happens to be on the only offensive shield in the game, that being the shield of Cthulhu, but I'm not complaining, thing is goated, it saved me on multiple occasions
Or the sargeant united shield that if you right click you can block contact damage and be invincible for a short period of time.

If you get enough damage reduction it could kinda be kinda blocking because most damage reduction item are shields and it would make sense to take no damage when your blocking a creature 10x you size

If you have straight arms, then you don't need a shield. You can use the shield slot more efficiently.

as long as bat knock me mid air and push me into lava, and debuff is sooo loooong in expert and master mode i still need those trash...
0:13 Your logic is flawed since shields were never meant to block all the damage but to reduce and/or redirect damage irl which is the point of most of them giving defense. The only shield that negates damage is Sergeant United Shield's parry since it's a reference to captain america's ultimate defense weapon. Negating defense is just an other game's mechanic and it makes less sense than giving defense since shields are just armor that you can have in your hand instead of an magical all blocking artefact.

Petition for terrashield where it's the ankh shield, frost shield, flesh shield, paladin shield, and shield of chuthulu combined
This sounds beyond broken, also having the shield of cthulhu, a expert drop, whould make the item impossible to craft in normal mode, i think it being just the frozen shield and ankh shield whould be more acceptable
I completely forgot the shield of chuthulu was an expert drop I always play on master mode now

Paladin shield? Ok, but it's way better to make a frozen shield with it
Shield of cthulu? Absolutely amazing, probably the best shield in the entire game because of how much usability it has throughout the game
The crimson shield I forgot the name of? I don't think I've ever used it before, but it's probably great
Frozen shield? Absolutely amazing for damage reduction, probably the second best shield in the game
Obsidian shield? It's very useful for pre hardmode bosses like the queen bee and the wall of flesh. There's not much use for it outside of pre hardmode, though
Cobalt shield? It's ok, but it's way better to turn it into an obsidian shield
And that tiny metal shield I forgot the name of? Probably not useful

Yeah, blocking would be awesome to have but it needs to be improved. The current parry is nice but it requires extremally percise timing and you are just very likely to get hit. Holding the shield should already give you some protection: I mean you literally can't attack while doing so

It's funny that Svings threw out of consideration the Sergeant United shield, which really works as a shield, allowing you to fend off enemy attacks.
by that definition the uzi is a shield, because killing melee enemies prevents you from taking damage

I feel like they could just add that one sword and shield weapon's parrying function to pretty much all other true melee swords, in exchange for maybe nerfing parrying on them a bit (doesn't deal damage to enemies or give you a buff, maybe also have it so it doesn't make you ignore 100% of damage so there's still a reason to use the other weapons).
Uh idk really about mechanic bc im still will just dodgin. Main ability of current shields is defensse and defensive feature like effect defence, no knockback, lower damage, giving some resist to teammates, being main target. If parrying or shielding would be added terraria will be maximum as just 1 button and mouse playing because if you would imperfected parry you would just get invicible effect. Its ok if there would be Cooldown but i dont saw any cd mechanic.

But the Frost shield is overpowered at the endgame phase, especially when all accessories are in Warding prefix. The Ankh Shield is also extremely powerful around Hardmode Pre & Post-Plantera

The Frost Shield against Moon Lord when I almost died at the second phase, and the Ankh Shield prevented me from getting any debuffs besides Feral Bite against Duke Fishron. Based on my experience, both are extremely useful, but if shields are to be overhauled, then I'll see what they are.
The title is a little bit clickbait, you didn't talk about how shields are bad, you just talked about how they aren't like shields. Plus, the shield of Cuthulu exists.

Blocking in general is a bad idea for terraria shields since it encourages a more slow and tanky play style, instead, more shields should have a sort of dash or ramming ability like the shield of Cthulhu, this encourages mobility and makes high level gameplay look more cool since you can use these shields to actually negate damage in a reliable way as long as you’re skilled enough to pull it off.

I forget which mod it was, I want to say Thorium, but in that mod shields gave a small, regenerating "shield" health pool that felt a lot more like what a shield would actually do.

I love using the frozen shield since I play multiplayer a lot and I like the buffs it provides. It’s annoying to obtain though so I usually only get it to craft things like in Calamity.

Although none of them blocks damage, I'd say the ankh shield does some of that as it gives you many immunities. Although behind the brutal grind.
I think it's already decent as it is HORRIBLE to live with knockback.

The shields (Not including Shield Of Cthulu because it has already the dash so, yeah.) should block attacks, yeah, but each blocking should have a cooldown, if not it can break some bosses, imagine blocking all of Eol attacks, it would just not be fair, with a cooldown to each blockings, I think it would be fair. BUT HEY THAT'S JUST MY OPINION!
