      I have a 15 inch USB 2 model, but I tried this mod and was unable to make it work. It lit up, and was identified correctly, but I only got a weird murky blobby image that seemed to have no signal and a bunch of lines. I checked everything and did continuity testing of my wires, but it never worked. I put the old Mac guts back in and it worked fine. I have not found a single 15 inch USB 2 model on the various conversions. They are all the larger ones or the guy in Japan who did an early version. I wonder if 6k ohm resistors instead of 1k ohm resistors would make a difference? The wiring seems the same as dremeljunkie's and yours. Perhaps the monitor only does thousands of colors on that cheap old model? At least the computer was free and it still works as a G4.

      Kacper Jacuński Many older Macs use an LVDS connection. Which is very similar electrically to DVI. You could theoretically do this on any Mac between 2002 and 2009. Although the G4 is by far the easiest as it has pins on the end of each wire, negating the need for micro soldering. I will be doing a video on the iMac G5 soon though!

    Thank you so much! I’ve been carrying around two 20" for like 6 years waiting to do this but could never figure out the DJ blog. Both are working great!
    Question: Have you seen random firing pixels on your display? Both of my mods have them. They are graphical (move when windows move) not display problems. I only had green pixels noticeable with DVI, but with an “upgrade” of DVI to HDMI connector, I now have red, green, and blue pixels randomly firing. Thought? Thanks

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад +2

      This could be caused by loose fitting connections or damaged wires, also a chance you’re getting interference from other electronics. Try playing with the connector and see if it fixes your problem, also I’ve had some luck wrapping the display cable in aluminium foil to block interference. Although a correctly done mod usually shouldn’t have any sort of random pixelation.
      This could also be caused by a grounding issue, where the ground pin for each colour isn’t grounded correctly. Try checking all of your grounds as a last resort. Best of luck! Hope this helps.

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад +2

      Also, are you plugging directly into something via DVI? Or are you passing through adapters? If you’re using a cheap adapter, or multiple adapters in series this can cause signal loss.

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад +1

      Ah, if you’re only getting green pixels on DVI my best guess would be the ground for your green LVDS connectors that isn’t properly seated.

    • @NateVandermay
      @NateVandermay 4 года назад +1

      Thank you-it may just bee damaged cables (since I have no idea) and cheap adapters compounded the issue. Switched back to DVI and the problem is less, though more than before I fiddled with it.
      When HDMI was connected, I tried connecting a Switch to see if it could function like a TV as well as monitor. The backlights game on but no image appeared. Is there a way to connect other devices than computers through this mod? I do not know anything about differences in video connections or science of digital signals.
      Thanks so much again for the tutorial and replies!

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад

      @@NateVandermay Hi, sorry I never saw your reply. most HDMI Media devices won't be compatible, as they don't support DVI over HDMI. Most PC's should work, as their HDMI interfaces also support DVI. Your best chance of getting something like a Nintendo Switch to work would be to buy an active adapter. As this can change the signal. Although even then I can't confirm 100% it'll work. Hello ! thanks for the tutorial, is very easy to follow. Unfortunately, didn't work for me. My Macbook pro recognize the Screen as an iMac Screen, and also the iMac screen turned on the the backlight. But there is no imagen, just a black with backlight screen. I check the correct connection of all the cables and everything is OK. I saw this video several times before attempting the mod. The iMac was working before, so Im was sure all should worked. If you have any idea of what is happening, please let me know.

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад +1

      This is strange behavior. It could be that you're not sending the required power to the LCD panel, or that the wake signal from the DVI connector is not hooked up correctly. Hopefully it is not your LCD controller that was fried, as if that's the case you might have to replace the LCD panel. If that is the case you can use iMac G5 LCD's (Which are far more common) inside the iMac G4 without any issues. I would double check all of your connections and make sure the correct voltage is being supplied to the LCD panel. You might get lucky and it could be a loose connection. Also try with another device, it might be an incompatibility with the adapter you're using. Hope this helps!

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад +1

      My best guess is that the red wire at 23:06 is not correctly hooked up. This is the wire that sends the activation signal to the LCD panel.

    • @cristobalbianchi
      @cristobalbianchi 4 года назад

      I will recheck the red wire. Also I was thinking on the 1k resistor of the yellow wire, that should be intially a 6k resistor, so do you think that mayby increasing that resistor could help? I checked the resistor ohms and was 0.997 ohms, so I thought maybe is not enough, what would happen if I put 2 resistor to give at least something around 2k?

    • @cristobalbianchi
      @cristobalbianchi 4 года назад

      I recheck the red wire, its ok, connected to the line of 14th pin. Also I added a second resistor to the yellow. The situation remain with no changes. The Screen turned on with the backlight, and the Macbook Pro recognize the screen as a iMac Screen and show the screen in the screens preference like it was functioning properly. But there is no image the iMac Screen. I dont know what else to do. I also thought that maybe I got confused with the grey and purple wires of the Big Grey cable, because both colors are very similar. I think the only other thing I can do is change does, but I'm not sure if that can make any damage to the LCD.

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад

      @@cristobalbianchi You only want a single 1k Ohm resistor to the red wire. a 6k Ohm or 2 1k Ohm resistors likely won't work. Have you taken a good look at the wiring diagrams in the description and verified that they match? Also, you are working on a 20" iMac G4 correct? If it's a 17" Or 15" the process is different. Usually this behavior is caused by a dead LCD, at least that can be swapped out quite painlessly, the LCD can be fried by sending the wrong voltage to it. Have a look through dremmel junkies guide: www.dremeljunkie.com/2011/11/all-in-one-20-imac-g4-genuine-tmds-to.html

    • @Pendleton115
      @Pendleton115  4 года назад

      I've had some issues plugging regular Media Equipment into my modded G4's, I believe it has something to do with the LCD only supporting a DVI signal, while most media devices only support HDMI. Most computers can detect which type of signal the monitor requires and then send it the DVI signal. Although, further testing would be required to see if theres some kind of active adapter that could make this work with regular media equipment. There's nothing stopping you from fitting in a laptop logic board and then inserting a Optical drive into the drive bay though, in fact if you stay tuned you might just see that on this channel :)

If not you could drive an External GPU and run the displays through that (As long as you don't plan on gaming on them) External GPU performance on thunderbolt 1.0 is pretty slow, but if all you plan on doing is driving a display I imagine it'll work fine.

      If you’re not getting 24v from your green wire then your PSU isn’t turning on, try checking your jumper lead from the DVI connector to the PSU, as it might not be receiving the 3.3/5v power on signal.
      The 12v rail on the PSU is always active to provide standby power.
