    About Life Below Zero:
    Life Below Zero follows six people as they battle for the most basic necessities in the state with the lowest population density in the United States. Living at the ends of the world's loneliest roads and subsisting off the rugged Alaskan bush, they battle whiteout snow storms, man-eating carnivores, questionable frozen terrain, and limited resources through a long and bitter winter. Some of them are lone wolves; others have their families beside them. All must overcome despairing odds to brave the wild and survive through to the spring. And when spring arrives in Alaska, rising temperatures bring mounting challenges as they work to prepare for yet another winter.

    Specifically, Huskies are notorious for being runaways and wanderers. It’s literally bred into them to travel long distances. It’s written in their DNA. An unhappy Husky is one who doesn’t have a job or enough exercise. These dogs are living the dream and the HUMAN doubters are only projecting their own point of view onto a species not like themselves. So very human of us to do...

      FUreplygirl This is nothing like slavery. Before a run, the dogs are raring to go. Once they're pulling that sled, they're quiet and enjoying themselves. Working dogs love what they do, and pet dogs love staying active. I feel sorry for show-bred dogs who can't do anything but look the way some people think they're supposed to.

      Starligt Anderson they probably don’t feel the same about service dogs because they get a break at the end of the day or get multiple breaks if they are guid dogs. Service dogs are taken well care of and their owners care about their well being. Dog sledding is way different though.

    • @Sukijopa
      @Sukijopa 5 лет назад +3

      @@starligtanderson5486 Sorry I didn't see this earlier. But actually, having worked in law enforcement, I DO feel the same way about service dogs. In fact, I know the same kind of lying, justifying, and twisting the truth until it's mangled beyond recognition also takes place in service dog "training' and use. Here is my testimonial on that:
      Before I worked at a police department, I thought K9 units were great. Then I thought it might be only my own department that was brutalizing the dogs. I found out, to my dismay, that the brutalization is standard. Did you know that police K9's are routinely hanged to unconsciousness? But that's not all. When I was doing my research, I came across a testimonial from a blind woman who was very distressed about the cruel mistreatment of her guide dog, by "trainers" at the guide dog "training" center. And I discovered yet more....
      Although I knew that our lead K9 "trainer"(at the PD where I worked) also "trained" (and hanged) search and rescue dogs, I was still saying to myself, "THIS has to be an anomaly. Not THAT many people can be abusive and keep it a secret." But when I left the police department and worked at a hotel, wouldn't you know it, search and rescue teams with dogs were coming from all over the country for events (three times during the years that I worked there) and I was at first struck by the fact that NONE of these people acknowledged their dogs' presence except to give orders. There were no kind words, there was no petting. It was, again, like the dogs were pieces of equipment. They were kept in crates when they were not being taken out to be trained, or to do their business. Very unlike how it is presented to us via the media.
      But what blew me off the cliff was when a group of about 15 of these handlers were sitting around in the lobby late one night, talking. One of them was regaling the others with the exploits of one of their peers, who conducted an experiment with his dog - beating the dog only when he wore a blue shirt. (I know that dogs are alleged to be color blind, or limited in color perception, but I'm just reporting what I heard). The end of this story was that the dog attacked and bit one of the supervisors, who happened to be wearing a blue shirt. There was hearty laughter all around the group.

    I visited a dog sledding place in fairbanks alaska with my mom. These dogs are unreal. It was like -25 degrees that day and the dogs are just outside leashed to their pole in the freezing cold with only a little doggy house they each had. But they seemed perfectly fine and comfortable.

      The dogs are kept on short chains most of the time, when not in use or in training, so OF COURSE they are eager to run.
      I know it is a foreign concept to animal exploiters to stop the self-serving actions with the dogs, and all the defensive chatter, and just give the dogs options, and see what THEY would like. That doesn't mean sabotaging the 'experiment' by cranking your heater up to 80 degrees. It means really thinking about THEM for a change.

    As Young Ones ourselves growing up in the North , we we taught to Run & Train our young Siberian Huskies by the time they were 5 months old .. never before that age .. EVEN THOUGH , THEY WANTED TOO !! But it is in their D.N.A. TO RUN !!! There was times , that , some of the other older Huskies would chew them off their traces & take THE PUPS Running !! As the Powers that be , Oh !! this is the Truth !! We would have to jump into a 4/4 & track them down , they were running !!! with the Pups !! Once they heard Us , they would head off into the Bush & Run along side of us !!! Once the Pups became Fatigued , the others stopped & just sat down , licked the Pups .. Brought them down , to us , sat beside the River .. Pawed the Young , not to drink to fast .. The Run WAS OVER Ah , the Nature of these Wonderful CREATURES !! Pure LOVE !! So many Valuable Lessons can be learned from them ~~~

In fact dogs are not really pets but have a working function either like these sled dogs or to guard farm animals etc. Most important is that they are given enough food and rest and love - and a useful function. Nothing wrong if we dont use them as "pets" . In fact its a waste not to use their useful traits as long as we treat them well.

      Well, you can always try dog fighting. That is very urban. It's cruelty isn't as easily disguised and swept under the rug as the sledding industry, but I'm sure your dog will "enjoy" it just as much!

    • @Feuerbach1
      @Feuerbach1 8 лет назад +9

      Is riding a horse the same as dog-fighting? What evidence do you have that dog-sledding is cruel to the dogs, or even that they don't enjoy it? I've owned several huskies and they are never happier than when they get to just gallop their asses off. I might concede a level of wear and tear after doing something like an iditarod, but I still wouldn't necessarily even call that anywhere near the level of cruelty that dog-fighting entails. Take your self-righteous bullshit elsewhere.

    Siberian Huskies were the backbone of the early 20th century Antarctic expeditions such as Roald Armundsen and his team expedition, (first to reach the Geographic South Pole) to the South Pole in 1911/12, started with 52 Huskies came back from the South Pole with 11 Huskies, (41 killed for food over 55 days). The Huskies' strength and skill were one of the main reasons they beat Robert Falcon Scott or Scott of the Antarctic and his team.

      Could be an Alaskan husky although their is no breed standard they are often bred based on what is needed from them

    I have nothing against working dogs if they are treated well...but you just can not keep these dogs chained multiple hours a day to a shed, doesn't matter how much time they spend running and pulling the shed. Seems like they are only used for that. Dogs need to spend "free time" with the owner, socialize with other dogs (dogs who are not chained up or have a harness on), explore the territory walking and sniffing...
    So I'm not a fan of those people who keep like 20 dogs just to win a stupid race, keep them chained all day, or don't care about them when they are too old to pull. Instead, I admire those who have a little pack, treat the dogs as family members, and considered sledding just a way to spend more time with the dogs.

      Bro they’re not gonna “socialize” with other dogs. They will kill each other to be the Alpha in the pack.

    • @anathemis9307
      @anathemis9307 8 лет назад +2

      +Mary l They wear them depending on their owners, where they sled, (usually they wear them if they sled in the woods), and whether it's pure snow or not. Dogs usually wear them in case they get frostbite while out on long sledding trips, but he only took his dogs out to fetch his broken down machinery, and run them for a while. They probably do have some though XD Sorry for long response.

      Chances are they don't use them and don't need them dogs who are always on there feet on rough terrain build up their pads and have a lot of tolerance to rough cold and sharp things... walk a farm dog through a field and they stop once or twice to pull something from there foot walk a city dog through a field and they limp around like you cut there feet off
