But he spends it all on going to the pub, going on holiday, eating takeaway, and buying drugs. Now imagine another person, Jane, also earns £100,000, but inbstead of spending the money on frivolous things she puts £80,000 into savings and investment assets. Jane and John will both have to pay the same income tax. But Jane will then have to pay additional taxes on the investments! Very unfair because she has already paid tax on the money to begin with.
