    3 things for me.
    1. Nika may "grade out" well - but she cannot be a game-changer. They need someone at the point who is more dynamic and can penetrate and get Paige the ball.
    2. Paige needs the fucking ball in HER hands - not Nika. We can do that with a quick hand-off at the top. Paige running around thru the lane is wasting the most talent in the nation.
    3. Who is coaching the kids on rebounding? It isn't just desire and "want to" - this has been a failing for at least a few yrs. in my opinion.
    Play KK and Shade more.
Grade Ice and give her playing time based on 1 metric - rebounds.
They could have actually won today (predicted a loss by 8-12) if Paige had the ball in her hands and ran the offense (would have had more total shots - and they made foul shots.
Sorry Geno I love you and I know you are doing your best - but I think you have a Nika hang-up - and it is hurting the progress of this team.

lol that's not how this works. As the star player she is you're held to a different standard. She got celebrated for many performances in the past, now she gets criticized for a bad performance - this is how high level sports work. With that said, the thing I do not like is that he barely ever criticizes Nika for bad play. Nika is not a scorer and is not expected to be one, but she makes alot of mistakes a PG for UCONN and with her experience should not make.

No ball movement. Just a bunch of players standing around watching Paige play. She’s busting her ass to try to distribute the ball and then has to bust her ass to get herself good looks to score. We need kk to start. She’s fast athletic and over the summer she did so well penetrating the defense and kicking the ball back out to Azzi for an open 3. If she can do that with Paige and qadence we’ll be okay. I love nika but we need players who can put up points. The 3 freshman’s can really come through for us they just need more playing time. I mean look what they did when they were all in together.

Agree with Geno, only hope for this season is to play the freshmen, and give them big minutes. Replace NM with KK, forget about CD ( great kid but she is done due to serial injuries) and try to compete as a small and fast team. Paige was off, not the first or second or third best player on the floor today. Not optimistic about the season due to lack of fight displayed by this team when they get down. Please prove me wrong.

    • @MrLarryLessor

Well hopefully the team doesn't have your pessimistic attitude..
YOu have to build off good performances..... Michael Jordan was hurt the enire season in 85 -86... then he scored 63 pts in the playoffs in 1 record-setting game.
Bc a player is injured right now in December, that doesn't mean by January they can't contribute - and you're just ready to like cut players from the team (You're like "Forget her")
This is not a cut-throat business. This is building a team/ skill/ growing and developing young minds and bodies.
And your attitude is "I just wanna win now - and if you can't help me forget about you"
Sounds like a lotta UCONN Fans grew entitled during Stewie's 4 year run. I'ts a whole different world/ different NCAA now:
WOmen are talented NATIONWIDe .... they don't all just go to Tennessee and UCONN anymore like in the old days - you have women with great speed/ athleticism skill all over in various conferences (Big Ten, SEC, Pac - 12 etc)
My main question is: Why did Geno leave Paige on the bench for so long in the 4th?
Can anyone answer that? Did Geno talk about that? Was he trying to make the other players work?
Well, they got the lead down to 9 - maybe he would not have done that in a tournament game.
Paige didn't return till maybe 5 minutes left in the 4th.
Maybe he's trying to ease Paige's body back into playing (not really sure that makes sense: that seems to contradict what Geno said "Great players don't get tired. When good players get tired, that's when great players kick their butt"
So why did Paige then need all that rest.??

  • @Tuscarora-Twigg
    @Tuscarora-Twigg 9 месяцев назад +6

Paige needs some help, she's not getting the screens she need swhen she needs them and there is no one to kick it out to for a three. The team is lacking a rebounder but they aren't done yet, they do need to get some games playing together, getting to know each others game. It was obvious that there was a lot of confusion on cuts. Aliyah, Paige & KK can score but that's not going to be enough. Nikka can score but she doesn't look for her shot. I think it's going to be fun watching them gel as they get used to Paige being on the court and she should definitely be running the point.

I have been a fan of UConn since 1995 after watching them beat Tennessee in that first regular season matchup. And what I have noticed is that UConn's post play has been weak since the departures of Gabby and Napheesa. The league has changed, and everyone is going big and physical, because the extra possessions are just as important as your perimeter shooting percentage. UConn can no longer just outscore other teams, because they are inconsistent. Their team defense is not creating the turnovers, which turns into fastbreaks. And why do you recruit post players and don't use them? Deberry is not going to give you 15pts, 20 rebs a night and yes, she is also soft in the post. But she has 5 fouls to give and just maybe if given some playing time, she may be able to get them some extra possessions off the boards. But one thing is 100% true, she can't help you sitting on the bench. UConn only had 5 Off. Reb. This team has a lot of talent, but they are not physical enough or big enough to compete with these other top tier programs. This is going to be a long year, but as always, I will be right there supporting them and hoping for the best.

    • @charleslockley9264
      @charleslockley9264 9 месяцев назад

I'm a UConn fan since 95 as well. I can tell you, based on their roster, they'll be better off playing small and trying to be disruptive defensively than trying to match up with bigger teams. Bueckers, Arnold, Muhl, Griffin, and Edwards are all good perimeter defenders. Ducharme, Shade, and Samuels are capable. Bettencourt has shown it in flashes. Even Patterson has quickness and athleticism (whenever she's available to play). Ice Brady is the only one who has to play more of a traditional big role since she lacks the quickness to play on the perimeter. Geno should instead play as many guards and small forwards as possible, have them press and be as disruptive as they can, and try to rebound and guard bigger players the best they can. Double, triple-team, and foul those bigger, dominant paint players.

Even when doing something as simple as setting a screen, she looks hesitant. Ashley Shade was an example for her to follow. Even though she was launching shots every time the ball was in her hands, at least she did it without hesitation. Not sure why Geno doesn't play Ines. She plays okay whenever she's in. She's just a bit careless with the ball and hesitates to shoot at times. The defense and effort is there though. Maybe its something she's not doing in practice that's causing her to not get minutes.

Rebounding and turnovers killed UCONN and its an issue that is not going away any time soon. Trying to defensive rebound "by committee" using small forwards/guards doesn't really work when the other team has actual size. Guards trying to guard actual bigs ends up with less guarding the 3pt shooters and even a mediocre shooting team like Texas will hit wide open 3pt shots enough to bury you. UCONN has had a multi-year issue with turnovers.. way too much too often.. and this game was yet another example of UCONN missing out on scoring opportunities from poor passing and ball handling under pressure. Long road ahead for UCONN... lots of teams as strong or stronger than Texas that will use the same tactics and likely get the same results. Eager too see what, if anything, UCONN can do to find a winning formula with the current roster.

Rori Harmon was in the same recruit class as UCONN no-loads Ducharme and DeBerry and overrated #1 recruit Azzi Fudd. As the three-year floor General and top defender of Nick Schaeffer's Texas program, Harmon has single-handedly accomplished more than all three of UCONN's overrated 2021 top recruits combined. Therein lies the problem...unlike during the glory years, Geno is now being out-recruited. His recruits are still Top 10-Top 15, but they are, with the noted present exception of Bueckers and Edwards, mostly overrated Top recruits.
The fact that Fairfield small-school transfer and non-top 100 player, Lou Lopez Senechal, was just recently arguably UCONN's top go-to player in crunch time - over and above most of their highly touted recruits - speaks to how UCONN's recruit talent has declined. Lou Lopez's recruit year was the same as NaLyssa Smith, Queen Egbo, and Shakira Austin - all now thriving in the WNBA. UCONN signed far less impactful and overrated #1 recruit Cristyn Williams that year.
Pressuring substandard recruits to live up to the accomplishments of Hall of Famers Lobo, Taurasi, Charles, Bird, Moore, Stewart, etc, etc, is bound to lead to frustration, misplay, and injury because they simply are not the horses capable of getting the job done.

I've been saying for awhile now that they are small and not athletically gifted. They are slow and can't compete athletically with the top programs. And they are small. Their two most athletically gifted players are Griffin and Patterson. And they are not especially gifted offensively. You look at South Carolina they have multiple athletic and offensively gifted players. And they are big. Uconn got destroyed on the boards. And Texas is not the biggest team they will face. Also, Nika should not be starting. She is supposed to be on the floor for defense and controlling the offense. But the point guard for Texas abused her and the offense is stagnant when she is at the point. Combine that with her being a liability on offense (a poor shooter), and she just should not be starting. I like her grittiness and toughness, but she is a liability on this team. If Uconn had a good shooting lineup, she could work. But with their lack of shooting, adding her to the mix accentuates that issue and it clogs the floor because of the lack of spacing. I have hope that if Geno plays the freshmen, they will be better when March comes around. But don't expect them to compete for a championship with this roster.

It’s over for UConn! Perhaps they may recover from this, but I seriously doubt it. This is reflective of the program! Geno is an antiquated coach from the 80s. He seriously needs better assistant coaches or a replacement! He seems to put everything on Paige Bueckers shoulders! Lisa Bluders of Iowa has a great assistant coach in Jen who is very good with post player athletes! It’s not ALL on Caitlin Clark…her teammates do back cuts, give Caitlin a break at times bringing the ball up, will nail the open 3 point shot if Caitlin gets double teamed. Yes, Caitlin does a lot of the heavy lifting but when she makes an extra pass, her teammates don’t leave her hanging. Geno needs better assistant coaches or he better start looking for his successor!

Geno is getting the big push this year....CD albeit is non-existent this year...just writes.... is why they hired Cardoza (a 14 year head coach as a assistant with a winning record at Temple??) who has contributed 0 to coaching so far this year in my mind. Watch who Paige goes and talks to when UCONN calls a timeout or when there is a timeout called in the huddle.
Marissa Mosely (bigs and defense recruiter) and Shay Ralph (PG and forward recruiting) they all left...saw writing on the wall. Couple that with the Big East move (had to pay 31M to leave one and join the other conference),,, the emphasis on UCONN football and men's basketball... the ladies that paved the way are now being left behind as men sports generate more income.

I think he needs to understand that in women's basketball having true bigs is still important, even crucial. The type of basketball he wants his teams to play may have worked with Stewie and Moriah Jefferson but it's not something that usually works on that level. If you look at the top ranked teams they all have at least one true big. That allows the guards to play more aggressively on the perimeter and take more risks applying defensive pressure; plus the rebounding would not be that much of an issue. Ofc for UCONN they are missing alot of depth on the inside positions but it's also in terms of recruiting that Geno has to do a better job.

It's not merely Nika, she isn't giving up 80 points. It's everyone. I can accept having bad shooting nights, bad turnover nights, loosing to better teams etc, but there's no excuse for not doing the foundational things like boxing-out, bearing down on layups, staying in motion on offense when without the ball, staying on your feet on defense, getting out to guard the three, and just generally playing with intensity of effort. This team (like several in a row before it now) has NO focus while on the court, shows NO hunger, and that blame begins, and ends with the coaching staff.

Also all these girls who play like 2 games and then get injured for an entire year...play two more games then get injured again....kick them off. Im sorry but you should have a whole calendar year or so to set foot on the court again, that it. Not sit on the bench and waste a team spot doing nothing. There are plenty of young talented kids in this country who are undiscovered who could use those jerseys to do something great but instead they are wasted opportunities by people who sit on the sideline for 3 seasons bc "maybe" they will do something really good later. Wake up people this is a broken system and needs to be fixed. They have a girl who has sat on the bench since last year, never played a single game, then injured herself playing in a foreign tournament and will be sitting out the entire year. Im sorry what?
