Hey Charles, Thank you for taking the time to do this video. I specifically got an iPad to use some of these apps to help me learn and continue to develop my piano playing. I'm recently retired and getting back into piano after 40 year of not playing. While I am reasonably tech-savvy, this world of learning via technology pletely new, so finding videos like your is a huge help. I'm amazed that there are people like you who put so much effort into publishing quality content for us. I'm surprised that real person playing the piece in FlowKey was not mentioned (or I missed it). IMHO it's super important to see correct fingerings and hand movements especially for beginners.
I've been using yousician for a few weeks. I think it's great. It really does feel like a video game which makes me keep wanting to practice and play and get higher scores. Also I like the auto button for tempo during practice where you play a section and if you did good enough it will increase the tempo a bit automatically for you.

My son and I have finished the whole Flowkey course. I haven't used yousician but I wouldn't switch to an app that doesn't have a "wait mode" as that really is veey helpful. Flowkey has bugs at times or mistakes in lessons but overall, after seeing this review, I'd say Flowkey is a more serious learning app than yousician.
I have been using Yousician for a few months now and the issue of colors in the notes is key, since it is associated with each finger, for all songs it is the same. Then after a while you automatically read and you know instantly with which finger to play each note and you create that perfect "choreography" for the difficult parts that if you choose your fingers incorrectly, you will not be able to execute those passages well. It is very simple to read that way and you advance very quickly with the technique with that way of showing you the notes.
That is really interesting. I had thought flowkey had the advantage there because of the recorded hands so you could see the choreography, but I kind of like the color coded idea. That might be worth looking into.
@@wholelottalight i tried flowkey because I thought the videos of the hands and positions would be important, but the truth Is, they don't translate over very well well whereas the color association is almost engrained in your brain super fast. I think after doing it a while, in the long run you would get comfortable with either, but as a beginner i started to click faster with flowkey color coordination.. especially if you slow down a vide... the flowkey pacing is terrible and the timing using the web app seems broken where it often comes in on down beats and causes your brain to get confused and it was never fixed for the month i tried it...
keep in mind if you're colorblind like me the color code could get confusing. although I'm using yousician. it has more feedback whereas with flowkey you better off learning from youtube tutorial
Tried yousician it was fun and they have a lot of free stuff but did not work teaching you to play , I could play things when using the app but if I turned off my tablet and just sat down at the keyboards I could not , I used flowkey and I have learnt 3 songs so I would have to put flowkey first only I would add is it would be nice if after learning a song you could download the sheet music

For me it is really important to see how to put my fingers. Yousician just shows the notes you need to play and i would not know which finger to use for what. That's a bit confusing.
yousician has colored notation which tells you which finger to use for each note. the different colors signify different fingers. green is thumb, yellow is index, etc

I was actually recommended flowkey by a friend, who actually gifted me my first month(I am an absolute beginner), and almost immediately ran into the 'if you know what you want to play' conundrum, the lessons are well thought out and I do like the wait mode for learning, but I think I am actually going to switch to Yousician because it looks more like something I'd enjoy to learn with. Full disclosure there is that I'll be going with the pro+ because my son wants to learn to sing and I think a learning app would give him more confidence in his voice. Overall thank you very much for your review, between you and a plethora of written reviews; it made my decision incredibly simple.
Flowkey has far fewer rock and pop songs and Ive just lost 4 songs I was learning because they didnt renew the licencing deal with the copyright owners which really annoyed me.
Sounds like Yousician would be better for me as I don’t want to learn to read sheet music,. The scales were tipped toward Yousician once I saw the option for songs notated in letters rather than symbols. TFS.
Took lessons when I was in my teens.I wanna continue playing, My Instructor wrote the notes down on the books, I enjoyed playing,it was so relaxing. I'm done Beethoven on Christmas church memes and other songs I learned "Memories from Cat's"

And to everyone - if you can - use a cable between your device and your piano - so much better with wait mode - gets correct registrations everytime even if you have to have a low volume like now ( 1030pm) when my kid is sleeping
Hey there, I had a one year plan for simply piano and its coming to an end. Im thinking about switching apps but im not sure where to go. Flowkey seems nice with a good amount of songs. I havent finished all the Courses on Simply Piano, but they all start so slow, with just single notes and only one hand. Would you recommend flowkey, continue simply piano or another app? cheers
For me its a really simple decision: yousician's music selection _suuuucks._ It is clearly targeting a younger audience with its plethora of modern pop garbage which I have zero interest in playing (10+ Billie Eilish tracks, but only 1 a-piece for Chopin, Liszt, Grieg, Michael Jackson, and so forth? Nah. Pass). It's a shame because I think yousician's teaching method and tools are superior to flowkey, and I would probably subscribe to yousician for maybe a month or so to learn its basics, but there's nothing to keep me around. I'd very quickly switch over to flowkey for its *absolutely phenomenal* selection of music. (Spirited Away, Requiem for a Dream, Final Fantasy VII, House of the Rising Sun, 10+ Chopin, Beethoven, Liszt, Grieg, etc. etc. the list goes on and on).
@@Drower We can't easily pronounce it like y'all can, our language literally doesn't have diacritics (aside from when someone optionally decides to keeps it in a loan word), and US keyboards don't have an AltGr key, so it's really the natural and practical thing to do. It's similar to when any language that doesn't have some of the sounds that another does, or has different spelling‑to‑pronunciation conventions, many times ends up pronouncing a loan word "wrong" in comparison to the parent language. For example, in English we pronounce the S in Paris while the French themselves don't, and "Japan" is a mispronunciation of its real name, "Nippon".

Yes, it does take a long time. But why not? What else will you be doing with your time? Mine as well learn something and become an expert at it, this will give you fulfillment.
It's maybe worth noting that the review here is somewhat outdate. I've been testing FlowKey today and it seems they now also have the feature to listen only to the right or left hand (without the other hand's notes' sound). You just need to click on either the right or left hand and then choose a slower pace (i.e. 50% or 75%) and then you will hear the notes of the chosen hand only in the selected pace. It doesn't seem to be possible to use this feature in normal speed (or at least I haven't been able to figure out how to do it). Since this seems to be a somewhat new feature (delivered within the last 2 years) I'm not sure if it's available for all pieces or only for a selected section. I tried it for 3 pieces only (River flows in you, Piano man & All of me) and it worked for all of them. Also, I don't notice any distortion when listening to the slower versions of the above mentioned songs. I'm not sure how obvious the distortion is / used to be so maybe my ears are not sensitive enough but could also be that they just fixed it.
Yousician gave a discount last month when I signed up, but after the 7 day trial they tried charging me full price. I can't believe they did this. I canceled it. I was disappointed in their marketing tactics.
I'm trying the SimplyPiano was looking for a next step up. Something that has more Classical music in it? Which is better? I'm still on the Intermediate level. Find you can't go back just a little when you mess up on Simply, you have to redo the whole song. I never know if I'm on beat either.

I was able to play piano & read notes 28 years ago, & is considering to go back from the start as I can’t remember how to read notes and hopefully to get back to basics and play a piano. The best part to me is being able to quickly/easily find something to play. Often I don't have a lot of time (or energy) during the week to waste looking for something to work on and in the past that just let to me not bothering to play so yousician is great when I have 30 mins and I often end up playing for longer. I started with bass and I'm on level 9 (max) now. I've also done some of the guitar and singing and just started piano this week and I'm on level 3 now and loving it! I wanted to improve my piano skills for composing and I find the yousician lessons are pretty good for technique and theory though some of the theory mini games are kind of annoying lol Getting full gold stars is relatively easy, getting to the top of a leader board and getting a perfect score means you have to have perfect timing on everything which is not easy at all on the more difficult pieces. To me, that's a better tool for perfecting your timing than a metronome ever will be. :-)
Great review. Question. I saw both ur reviews on FK and Yousician. Are the songs you want to learn can they be expert or Pro levels or do only teach you water down version?

@@CharlesCleyn Great thanks. I actually like it but it got skewered by another reviewer over the music purchase stuff which doesnt bug me much. Their midi interface for notes is really quite good and I like that its an actual app for the mac.
Me too. I did the free trial of Simply Piano, and it’s fun, but it seems like it would get frustrating with more advanced songs. Playground Sessions looks like it might have more flexibility.
How do the libraries compare in terms of available songs and in what categories? Does one have more gaming music or classical music or pop music than the other? Also wondering if either has any way to import songs (either from MIDI or something like MuseScore) and get help with playback?
yes. It's still sheet music as long as you don't fully convert it to guitar hero bars. I found it made associations with keys much easier since I wasn't spending as much cognitive energy trying to read music and sense where I was, but had more queues of where I was and started to quickly listen to the tones and sound and feel of the keyboard quickly

Hope flowkey takes note of your comments.. but it comes with all the songs for the subscription, where yousician tries to push you into a more expensive sub when you want the good songs...
some of these piano apps try to trick you into paying for an entire year. They make it look like you are paying a monthly fee then they charge you for the year after the trial period.
So i wanted to ask probably a dumb question. Does yousician. Have spanish songs. Or does flowkey have them? Cause i do want to learn some spanish songs on like guitar. Or paino
You need a midi to usb cable. I got one on amazon. And you can just play as long as theres a mic to pick up the piano. I would recommend the cable though. Sometime it doesnt pick up the sound for me.
@@CharlesCleyn it has its limitations when it comes to learning to read music. Its mainly for amateurs to learn simple to moderate songs via the animations. But importing a midi file does generate sheet music on screen too, so someone that want to learn to read can use that feature alongside the animations.
@@shygun0613 Yes flowkey has some k pop. It isn't a ton, but there are some BTS songs and a couple others on there. I don't use the other one so I can't comment. You can search by genre in the flowkey app and it will tell you what songs it has if you don't know specific titles. I just put in kpop and it came back with a few things. You might also consider looking into Synthesia though if neither has what you are looking for. It lets you use pretty much any midi file. It is also a bit cheaper (and one time payment) and maybe doesn't have all the same features, but at least you can use whatever songs want. Good luck!
Hey there co army. I subscribed to flowkey trial and they got arounf 7 bts songs as of the moment! But i find the distorted sound in the slow mode annoying too, that's why I tried yousician. But too bad, not even a single kpop song exists in yousician. :'( now I don't know what to purchase. I want to learn piano theories and all but also want to play bts songs hahah. Maybe i can purchase yousician and just look up piano tutorials in yt for kpop songs??
I started on yousician after getting the basics of piano I switched over to wiki articles on musical notation on sheet music, warm ups on RUclips and a very easy sheet music and from there I worked the way up.

I tried yousician for my guitar and it made practicing fun! I think this is important for keeping someone’s interest in any instrument. Flow key seems boring. I might go back to yousician for piano.
So yousician is the way. You should have added, that you can also learn to sing with yousician. Which is maybe important for some people that are learning an instrument, because some want also to perform their favorite songs with singing.

I purchesed Flowkey subscription, it was cool at the beginning but it became very difficult after a while and I can't move on as a beginner, I lost motivation to use the app for a while at least. I'm trying out Yousician and I feel like it's much more beginner friendly, if you aren't used to sheet music and the progress is smoother, doesn't jump to a much higher level suddenly like Flowkey does (I can't even play the beginner songs with two hands and it frustrates me), I'm having more fun plus the audio distortion in Flowkey is really an off thing, thr developers should definitely correct it
Tried Flowkey today, but when using the automatic stop feature, the app couldnt detect whether i was playing the correct notes i.e. i was deliberatly playing the wrong notes and the auto stop feature started again. Can i ask whether your wired into the app?
Red is advanced on flowkey purple is pro - yellow is intermediate. For whatever reason I can’t learn one hand at a time I have to learn both hands at once.
I have Rocksmith for guitar and I love the format. I've tried Yousician for guitar on my phone and it feels similar. I just heard about FlowKey and was curious. Thanks for your comparison. Personally, the Yousician style feels more my speed.
Thanks for comparison. Flowkey was on shortlist because it has courses for playing scales. I have experience playing piano. So if you count in mind you perhaps need no metronom? Is Yousician good for playing scales as training?
Musician definitely has some good technical practice and if you're looking to get better at skills then that could be a good app for you. The metronome aspect really is an important feature that I believe Flowkey will fix in the future because since it's so important
I thought Flowkey was going to be what I was going to sign up for since I am a violist since this is not my first instrument. However without a metronome the program is useless for me. I did like the wait mode in Flowkey but no metronome, no deal. I also want early/late feedback so now I’m leaning towards trying Yousician! Thank you for the review!
Then Flowkey is your only option with the lifetime subscription if a service is what you are after. There are also RUclips videos if you want specific things like scale practices, but it's a real hodge-podge.
I have no experience whit yousician, my opinion is not from based from both sides cause im a flowkey user for a long time. Despite this i do understand how flowkey might be hard for a complete beginner.

try the free version of both first (i believe yousician only limits the time for learning for its free version), and also try youtube tutorials

Yousician has stepped it up since I last tried it and they’ve improved it even more now.
It's been 2 years since the last time I use Youcisian. Does it have more songs in the song library now? I mean more new Pop songs.

3 months free FlowKey with a Yamaha keyboard has decided for me.

For experienced or little more advanced Flowkey is heaven.

I want to learn piano but from what I know it takes ages to learn sheet music which means I'd not be able to play a lot of songs until I learn it all.

You can play the very easy sheet music in a week, or try noobnotes to get to playing songs quickly!

Also, I don't notice any distortion when listening to the slower versions of the above mentioned songs. I'm not sure how obvious the distortion is / used to be so maybe my ears are not sensitive enough but could also be that they just fixed it.
Are there a lot of jazz songs on Yousician? Or on FlowKey? I basically just want to learn jazz piano.

Yousician gave a discount last month when I signed up, but after the 7 day trial they tried charging me full price. I can't believe they did this. I canceled it. I was disappointed in their marketing tactics.
I'm trying the SimplyPiano was looking for a next step up. Something that has more Classical music in it? Which is better? I'm still on the Intermediate level. Find you can't go back just a little when you mess up on Simply, you have to redo the whole song. I never know if I'm on beat either.

The best part to me is being able to quickly/easily find something to play. Often I don't have a lot of time (or energy) during the week to waste looking for something to work on and in the past that just let to me not bothering to play so yousician is great when I have 30 mins and I often end up playing for longer. I started with bass and I'm on level 9 (max) now. I've also done some of the guitar and singing and just started piano this week and I'm on level 3 now and loving it! I wanted to improve my piano skills for composing and I find the yousician lessons are pretty good for technique and theory though some of the theory mini games are kind of annoying lol Getting full gold stars is relatively easy, getting to the top of a leader board and getting a perfect score means you have to have perfect timing on everything which is not easy at all on the more difficult pieces. To me, that's a better tool for perfecting your timing than a metronome ever will be. :-)
Great review. Question. I saw both ur reviews on FK and Yousician. Are the songs you want to learn can they be expert or Pro levels or do only teach you water down version?

Me too. I did the free trial of Simply Piano, and it’s fun, but it seems like it would get frustrating with more advanced songs. Playground Sessions looks like it might have more flexibility.
How do the libraries compare in terms of available songs and in what categories? Does one have more gaming music or classical music or pop music than the other? Also wondering if either has any way to import songs (either from MIDI or something like MuseScore) and get help with playback?

yes. It's still sheet music as long as you don't fully convert it to guitar hero bars. I found it made associations with keys much easier since I wasn't spending as much cognitive energy trying to read music and sense where I was, but had more queues of where I was and started to quickly listen to the tones and sound and feel of the keyboard quickly

some of these piano apps try to trick you into paying for an entire year. They make it look like you are paying a monthly fee then they charge you for the year after the trial period.

You need a midi to usb cable. I got one on amazon. And you can just play as long as theres a mic to pick up the piano. I would recommend the cable though. Sometime it doesnt pick up the sound for me.

@@CharlesCleyn it has its limitations when it comes to learning to read music. Its mainly for amateurs to learn simple to moderate songs via the animations. But importing a midi file does generate sheet music on screen too, so someone that want to learn to read can use that feature alongside the animations.

@@shygun0613 Yes flowkey has some k pop. It isn't a ton, but there are some BTS songs and a couple others on there. I don't use the other one so I can't comment. You can search by genre in the flowkey app and it will tell you what songs it has if you don't know specific titles. I just put in kpop and it came back with a few things. You might also consider looking into Synthesia though if neither has what you are looking for. It lets you use pretty much any midi file. It is also a bit cheaper (and one time payment) and maybe doesn't have all the same features, but at least you can use whatever songs want. Good luck!

Hey there co army. I subscribed to flowkey trial and they got arounf 7 bts songs as of the moment! But i find the distorted sound in the slow mode annoying too, that's why I tried yousician. But too bad, not even a single kpop song exists in yousician. :'( now I don't know what to purchase. I want to learn piano theories and all but also want to play bts songs hahah. Maybe i can purchase yousician and just look up piano tutorials in yt for kpop songs??

I started on yousician after getting the basics of piano I switched over to wiki articles on musical notation on sheet music, warm ups on RUclips and a very easy sheet music and from there I worked the way up.

I tried yousician for my guitar and it made practicing fun! I think this is important for keeping someone’s interest in any instrument. Flow key seems boring. I might go back to yousician for piano.
For case of piano I would choose flowkey as it also show fingers and is also seem to have more variety of songs

So yousician is the way. You should have added, that you can also learn to sing with yousician. Which is maybe important for some people that are learning an instrument, because some want also to perform their favorite songs with singing.

I purchesed Flowkey subscription, it was cool at the beginning but it became very difficult after a while and I can't move on as a beginner, I lost motivation to use the app for a while at least. I'm trying out Yousician and I feel like it's much more beginner friendly, if you aren't used to sheet music and the progress is smoother, doesn't jump to a much higher level suddenly like Flowkey does (I can't even play the beginner songs with two hands and it frustrates me), I'm having more fun plus the audio distortion in Flowkey is really an off thing, thr developers should definitely correct it

Tried Flowkey today, but when using the automatic stop feature, the app couldnt detect whether i was playing the correct notes i.e. i was deliberatly playing the wrong notes and the auto stop feature started again. Can i ask whether your wired into the app?
Red is advanced on flowkey purple is pro - yellow is intermediate. For whatever reason I can’t learn one hand at a time I have to learn both hands at once.

I have Rocksmith for guitar and I love the format. I've tried Yousician for guitar on my phone and it feels similar. I just heard about FlowKey and was curious. Thanks for your comparison. Personally, the Yousician style feels more my speed.

Thanks for comparison. Flowkey was on shortlist because it has courses for playing scales. I have experience playing piano. So if you count in mind you perhaps need no metronom? Is Yousician good for playing scales as training?
Musician definitely has some good technical practice and if you're looking to get better at skills then that could be a good app for you. The metronome aspect really is an important feature that I believe Flowkey will fix in the future because since it's so important
I thought Flowkey was going to be what I was going to sign up for since I am a violist since this is not my first instrument. However without a metronome the program is useless for me. I did like the wait mode in Flowkey but no metronome, no deal. I also want early/late feedback so now I’m leaning towards trying Yousician! Thank you for the review!

The apps are too expensive. If I want to pay $120-$150 per year, I want to own the lessons so I can go back years from now.
Then Flowkey is your only option with the lifetime subscription if a service is what you are after.
There are also RUclips videos if you want specific things like scale practices, but it's a real hodge-podge.

I have no experience whit yousician, my opinion is not from based from both sides cause im a flowkey user for a long time. Despite this i do understand how flowkey might be hard for a complete beginner.
