    I don't know what is the most beatiful song: "Maryland my Maryland" or "My Old Kentucky Home" The only clear fact: I enjoy a lot hearing both songs in each Preakness Stakes and Kentucky Derby.
    Greetings from Venezuela.

    Mention Gettysburg and all is remembered is Picketts charge on day 3. In actually some of the fiercest fighting was actually on day 2 on Culps Hill, that lasted well after dark between Union troops from Maryland and the Confederate Maryland brigade. What the Confederates did not know when they broke off fighting at 10 pm, was that they were actually only about 100 yards from the top of the hill and breaking through the union lines.

      Perhaps the Naval Academy doesn't support armed insurrection against the US government. They sang the third verse.

      @brainiac-mv6wd 6 лет назад +13

      It wasn't an armed insurrection. It was defense against northern (federal) oppression. And, it is happening again.

      brainiac 1900 call it what you want but it was an armed rebellion against the United States, it’s government and it’s military so why would the navy sing the confederate verses of the song?

      Shane Gregory well they’re not changing the lyrics, just singing the parts of it that don’t talk about the armed rebellion. Like I said, this is the military they won’t sing about confederates, who tried to tear the nation apart

      @@thegreypenguin5097 Maryland tried to secede. It took a number of (at least historically) extrajudicial measures to keep Maryland in the Union. Maryland was a slave state and Maryland citizens fought under the Confederacy, including in the famous Stonewall Brigade. The opening line of the song - “the despot’s heel is on thy shore” refers to Abraham Lincoln and the line “avenge the patriotic gore/that flecked the streets of Baltimore” refers to uprisings against Union soldiers in Baltimore. Maryland has its flaws. It’s okay to recognize them and acknowledge them, but it doesn’t need to diminish your love for the state.
