    One of the best if not THE best portrayals in a movie of a real life event.
    Lauda was, is almost unique.
    I've read his books. I've heard him interviewed and never once is he anything but gracious to James Hunt who won the title that year when Lauda missed races recovering from this crash. He never brings it up...uses it as an excuse.
    I remember being in disbelief as a 12 year old that he was coming back to race later that season.
    A TRUE sporting Legend.
    The great Niki Lauda.
    A nod to towards James also.

      I believe Emerson Fittipaldi was one of them.
      I know that Ferrari tried to hire Fittipaldi to take the place of Lauda when he went to hospital do visit him. Ferrari considered that Lauda were already dead and Fittipaldi got really mad with them being so disrepectiful. He told Niki about it and Niki got mad as well. It shows how heartless F1 bussiness can be. We saw it when Ratzberger and Senna died.

    I found it very interesting that Ron Howard goes with Niki Lauda's theory that the crash had been caused by a broken suspension rod. Right after the crash - even while Niki was still in he helicopter - the Ferrari team released a note that the car crashed due to a driver error. the wreck was found to be in a condition that made it impossible to judge whether the broken suspension arm had been the cause or the consequence of the crash. I personally tend to think that Ron Howard is right to picture it like this, since a driver error is very unlikely - even in damp conditions, this was a flat-out-kink for the drivers.

    • @PhilAndersonOutside
      @PhilAndersonOutside 7 лет назад +13

      TheColinChapman I believe the abruptness of the spin, and Lauda's inability to correct it lended enough credence to his claim that Howard went with it.

      Remember that Lauda was rightly famous for his ability to 'know' a car and tell the mechanics exactly what the issues were.
      Hard to think he made an error yet blamed it on the car; I've seen nothing of him that suggests he'd make something up like that.
      In the Japanese Grand Prix where he stopped racing due to the weather (while Hunt came 3rd and won the championship by 1/2 a point), Ferrari told him to say the engine was screwed. I've seen him interviewed where he said "No, it was me, not the car, and it would be wrong to say otherwise" (I'm paraphrasing).
      Doesn't sound like someone who makes stuff up to cover himself, does it?

    • @matthiassoelle
      @matthiassoelle 5 лет назад +2

      Steeltrap yes Niki Lauda was famous for knowing the car in and out having had a lot of influence when it was built. I am sure with his experience he knows how the car would react when the suspension breaks and he would also feel it. I would totally trust his judgment.

    Niki Lauda: Of course he didn't listen to me. For James, one world title was enough. He had proved what he needed to prove. To himself and anyone who doubted him. And two years later, he retired. When I saw him next in London, seven years later, me as a champion again, him as broadcaster, he was barefoot on a bicycle with a flat tire, still living each day like his last. When I heard he died age 45 of a heart attack, I wasn't surprised. I was just sad. People always think of us as rivals but he was among the very few I liked and even fewer that I respected. He remains the only person I envied.
    Rip Niki no doubt you and James are enjoying a beer maybe some women too.

    The fact that they raced the Nordschleife is terrifying. A modern f1 car even struggles in places with as much downforce as it has. These old cars without power steering any sort of traction or abs control are nuts to drive and the less downforce during this time because of less aerodynamics means they’re very sketchy round bends and this track has 73. But F1 on Nordschleife this was bound to happen eventually it’s just amazing he survived. The Nordschleife is a track to be respected and I can see all these drivers gave it the respect just the FIA didn’t by racing there in the first place. He’s so lucky he crashed in a relatively well marshalled area. RIP you legend

    As far as I remember Lauda didn't wore a balaclave. That's why his face was burned. After this accident the balaclava was obligated.
