  • Rethinking the types of environments cancer treatment and support can take place in, Ark Shelter, Archekta and neuroscientist Menno Cramer developed a ‘warm nest’ for the AZ-Zeno Hospital in Knokke-Heist, Belgium - a multipurpose care space we explore in our latest video series FRAME Views: Humanized Healthcare.
Informed by research on how to promote healing by considering the physical, physiological, psychological and social needs of patients, the design of the cancer treatment building provides a variety of spaces focused on calmness, reflection and recovery - intentionally made more akin to an intimate domestic environment than a clinical one. Ark Shelter and Archekta took a modular approach to the interiors, bolstering their strategy with the help of neuroscientist and designer Menno Cramer to take into account the varying journeys a user could have in the centre. The combination of appointment, activity and therapy areas strike a balance of privacy and openness. Cramer shares that understanding the relation between ‘the impact design has on us and how we interact with space’ opens up a whole new layer of architecture.
