An important thing to remember: nobody in the audience really cares what instrument or gear you play or how much it costs. What they do care about is that it sounds good, and that it doesn't distract them from what they are there to do, which is to worship God. Play what sounds good and feels right to you. Trust in the gifts that the Lord has blessed you with.

I play in a small church and I'm the only person who knows what gear and pedal effects I'm using. When I bring an electric guitar it's like wow, look at that. Everyone else plays acoustic because it looks and sounds humble/down-to-earth.
Unless your a guitarist and notice those things.
I've been using a Line 6 Variax JTV-59 for years. It's just amazing its versatility; guitar models to choose depending on the song to be played and the powerful tool of programming strings for different keys.
Actually I'm shooting for my dream guitar, a Veritas American Pro, bc I just love that guitar and its sound.

I went to Guitar Center today and couldn't figure out what guitar to buy for worship. I also thought about my economic situation and felt bad about not being able to buy the $1700 Taylor guitar the guy recommended. Thank you so much brother for the encouragement. I totally agree there's a difference between being a musician and a worshipper. It has to be about Yeshua (Jesus)!

I use my Ibanez RG for worship. Humbuckers in my opinion can best tackle the worship tones.
Troy, I agree 100% to what you just shared. I'm in my 70's have been playing worship for many years, first with an acoustic and then later taught myself to play electric. I started with a Strat with lace sensors and now have a couple of inexpensive guitars with humbuckers. I think the electric guitar should contribute to the worship song and not draw attention by over playing. I see that so many times and it is a distraction from worship in my opinion. I really like where the current worship songs have gone and especially like your teaching video's. Thanks for sharing from your heart something that really needed to be said.

I think a fender HSS strat is pretty versatile. Beautiful creamy clean tones on the single neck pickup and the humbucker in the bridge can let you rock.

all types of guitars can work in any style of music. It is how well it projects and sits in the mix.
@@johngsteel This is untrue, because the last sentence refutes it. Not all guitars and all pickup combinations project and sit in the mix in a way that is suitable for certain types of music. I do agree, however, that MANY types of guitars can work great in many different types of music with the right pickups installed and a knowledgeable player who can tweak a rig well. 😃 Not all people have that kind of ear, so a little nudge in the right direction can be very helpful to them.

For the last 5 years steady, I've been using a MIM Fender 72 Reissue Telecaster Thinline. Modded with Fender Reissue Wide Range pickups, 1 Meg pots, Orange Drop cap, CRL selector switch and a Switchcraft input jack. Before using this guitar. I used whatever I had. {I have 25 other guitars.}
I agree with you. I used a Epi LP Standard and sounds amazing, but finally need something more versatile, and that's how I get a PRS Custom 24 SE, with split coil and I love it.
When you have a good set, and sounds the way you want and makes you feel comfortable, you stop thinking about gear and more on worship God.

Noiseless p90s (i use the lollar hum canceling) are the way to go. Harmonics fit your standard mix - quiet as a humbucker. Rhythm, lead - it covers the bases. I have them in a japanese revstar - good value for such a fine instrument.

I am playing Les Paul with low wind PAF pickups and it’s really works good to me, when Gibsons are not very popular guitars in worship

I definitely agree... I don't have any high end guitars myself and I've noticed that I keep getting caught up in the "rat race" as you mentioned and tbh, it's absolutely draining on me as a guitarist. I watch tutorials and covers and I get jealous of these guys that have these awesome guitars and I think to myself "If I could only get my hands on something like that, then I'd be set and I wouldn't have to try as hard" but hearing these words has made me realize that it doesn't matter what I use. As long as I'm using what I have to glorify Him and what He's done, I don't have to get caught up in the chaos of having "high end" gear, because He's doing his work through me no matter what guitar I have. Troy, great choice of topic and conversation. Love that you’re leading with play something that does what you want.
Also, that Music Man Majesty (John Petrucci) is IMO one of the most versatile guitars I’ve ever played. It might not look it but it’s perfectly built for worship. The DiMarzio pickups are incredibly articulate and coupled with a Piezo, coil taps, and ability blend the pickups it makes for a really versatile guitar. That said it retails over $3K...so it should be.
You make some excellent points. My personal opinion is that if someone is really serious about worship Guitar the best place to start would be to have a tele AND a really low output, articulate humbucker Guitar. That would cover pretty much everything you’d ever need short of nailing that Gretsch White Falcon tone.
Absolutely! What is wonderful about what we do playing in a worship setting is that when the focus IS on Christ .... the gear will sound great ;-)

Sounds like good advice. I play whatever guitar is comfortable or in working order ;). But playing with volume, tone, pickup selection, patch/pedal settings, etc. can get you pretty much get whatever tone you need.

Hey Troy! Thanks for being real man! I appreciate your knowledge but even more so your heart. This was really encouraging to me, at where I’m at right now. I’m currently the only electric player at my church, and we’ve seen really good players with really flashy gear come in and leave to go to bigger churches with more established worship programs in our area, and so I’ve been battling the thoughts about what I should have, or what I should be play for a while now, dealing with a lot of inferiority stuff, not just because of my gear, but also my level of talent. Not to say that it’s bad to want to get better, and I am working on that, trying to turn that energy towards practicing, but I’ve found myself getting caught up in my worth as a worship leader, and my worth to the team, and this was a good reminder that it God isn’t looking at the name on my headstock or the peddles on my board, or the amp I’m playing through, or even the complexity or originality of my licks, He’s looking at my heart and Kong’s for my worship. Not that I’m going to forget about the dedication we try and have to excellence on our team, but the focus needs to be on Him and on our ability to help in leading the church to His presence. As much as I want a Portlander, it won’t impact my hearts ability to worship. Thanks man!

P90 is my fav, I love that dark rounded crisp sound, with the perfect amount of treble, to where its articulate but not harsh.
Lollar Special T - for single coil, and McNelly Stagger Swagger are amazing for humbucker size p90.
I have found that my Strat with a Seymour Duncan PRail in the bridge lets me get a HUGE variance of tone and versatility.
I’ve taken more of a liking to single coils because they tend to cut through and sit well in a mix of a worship setting.
Strat style guitars are my weapon of choice and what I’m comfortable with;
use what works best for you.
Being a lefty and not a fan of Fender, Gibson or Semi-hollows. I am blessed and now have two headless beauties that are my go-tos in church. Kiesel Zeus 8 string multiscale and my Strandberg Prog 6 string. Hahahah one day it will be an Aristides once i hit the lotto.

Just buy a Reverend Guitar. For the price, the QAQC, playability, and construction are TOP notch. They all also come with a bass contour knob to get a single-coil pickup range without losing much fullness. I have a Tricky Gomez RT with their take on a filtertron pickup (only hotter) and Warhawk II-HB (vintage PAF style).
You are spot on about Reverend. I meant to mention their guitars but forgot. My friend and a gentleman I give lessons to has one. They are an incredible value for the money! Great point, brother.
For those unfamiliar, they're still operating somewhat under the radar, but have gained a huge following in recent years. All of their instruments are made in Korea, however, every single instrument is finished and shipped from their headquarter facility in Toledo, Ohio. I've played many instruments that are 2, 3, or 4 times the price that couldn't touch the Reverend **Cough...Gibson...Cough**. Bottom line, don't let smaller companies or imported guitars scare you away. 'Made in USA' doesn't carry the same flag as it did 20 years ago.

If you have the money, the old USA Reverends from the 90's are super killer guitars. I have never played a guitar that felt better to this day. Such a great brand
I will only typically use one guitar on a weekend. I'll listen to the songs and figure out if SC or HB are the best fit for the majority of the songs and go with what works best for the majority. I am lucky, SC are quiet at my church as long as moving lights aren't on the floor. I have all solid body guitars.

I have guitar thompson strat brand it's cost only $100 its 3 years i been using even its rusty because my hands sweat when im playing . I have no money for buying a new guitar buying for a pedal i only use 15 amp. But I enjoy playing it for the glory of God.

My favorite guitar is my PRS Custom 24. It is surprisingly chimey, and the coil splitting makes it super versatile. However, I still feel the need to add a Gretsch or Tele because of the “worship stigma,” so you are spot on. Honestly, if another player wants to look down on me for playing a PRS in church, they have their own issues to work through...
I certainly hope no one looks down on anyone for the instrument they play. It’s what they bring to the table that matters. Sound, complimenting the music, servant heart, etc.

As for a guitar... 25.5" scale solid body guitar with a set of Lollar El Rayo's, Lollartrons or Lambertone Cremas will get you there most of the time.

I had this idea a couple of days ago for the person that wants that ultimate guitar but cannot afford it up front:
Start with a MIM or Squier Classic vibe with a good body and decent insides. Then start to upgrade. Find a better neck on Warmoth and swap it out. Then go to the pickups. Then the hardware. Then, at last, swap out the actual body. In the end you end up with a completely custom guitar that costs a lot less because you are able to sell the parts you no longer use!
We call that "horse trading" where I'm from! Haha. 😜

Thank you for making Christ the reason. Our focus should always be Him first and ithrough His power He might perform a miracle and make me sound good. I stink at guitar so I am trying to focus on getting better instead of buying gear with the hope that it makes me sound better (instead I build pedals; which is cheaper and mod my guitars and amps to get the sound that I hear in my head).
If you want an humbucker to act like an single coil; set the pickup really low in the cavity and raise the pole pieces really high. Single coil dynamics and humbucker quietness, add an 4wire single coil option and it's as versatile as you can get.

The guitar you have is the best guitar for worship. There is no need for any special gear.
If the guitar you have is distracting to the congregation, it's not the best guitar for worship. We need to make sure the focus is on Jesus, not us. I'd say you're comment should be framed with that in mind. No?
Agreed, but truthfully, how many guitars are actually distracting? Guys play white falcons all the time, and that's nearly as distracting as a hot pink Flying V.

Guitar for HIS Glory I see what you are saying but I guess that's where I disagree with you. The guitar you are playing matters very little in regards to your tone. ESPECIALLY once you make the move to modeling imho. Pretty much any decent guitar will work just fine.

sakamuras s personally I think it's not necessary most of the time. However, there are a lot of worship musicians who are professionals. I firmly believe that you should have the best tools for the job so I support them. However most churches are staffing their band with a rotating cast of volunteers. For most in that scenario, the best thing to do is invest in a quality multifx board and play into a clean amp or direct in. The line 6 helix, boss gt series, headrush, axe fix ax8, are much more affordable ways to produce quality tones for those who can't afford to outfit their boards with the latest gear from strymon.
Been playing our church's electric guitar for more than 10years now its a local brand strat all stock parts paired with a 10-15watts amp, in a semi hall environment, now im planning to buy my own electric guitar but I cant afford a local brand Les Paul so I think im gonna pick the tele local brand for just $94 only, it has good reviews thou. I believe that its all about the heart when playing for God, a pure heart & genuine worship is enough, as a front liner We need to be worshipping Christ 1st before we can lead the church to worship Him. Before that I played a Squire Tele that the church bought on a budget because we’re a super small church. It sounded great! For me, my trusty ol' SG does the job. I agree wholeheartedly on the humbucker statement (if your church experiences a lot of noise/ wiring issues. Right now I have a Seymour Duncan JB (high output) in the bridge & a jazz (vintage output) in the neck. We play everything from old hymns to the more contemporary stuff. Whenever the worship leader asks for something specific (more drive/ high voiced chords/ ambient swells) I can usually cover exactly what he is looking for!

Best guitar I’ve found is a Tele with an Emerson Custom prewired 4 way kit. You get the benefits of the tele, but with position 4 bridge that sounds like a mean humbucker... and yes l took a Squire tele and replaced with the Emerson kit and then added Bill Lawrence, Keystones. I have like $600 in it and I would put the tone up against some much more expensive guitars. Then add a Kemper and the sky is the limit, with one guitar and “one” amp. Troy you know your stuff man, keep up the good work, blessings!

30 + years in church.. worship leader always played one 🎸 and never seen a problem. It was either acoustic guitar or Fender 🇺🇸 Stratocaster ( different players)
Bottom line it's the player - my friend can make a $50 🎸 like a $6000 🎸
Worship is about the presence of God and it takes both the worship team but also you and where your 💓 is.
I've played several Fender and Gibson guitars in worship, and the one that I get the most requests to play is my stock '98 Les Paul.

Great points, however, a Kempler is $1800 + the $600 music man + the $200 pickups, yea that's going to sound good. Inversely, he could have a $1800 guitar, several pedals equaling $600 and it would sound amazing. The point is both setups are well over 2 grand which is a lot more than some people can afford and even though the first one is "simple" it's expensive.
I've used everything from a schecter parts strat(my main guitar) to an epiphone thunder horse.
to me the simple stuff is the most powerful, look at the beatles, simple but powerful
thank you brother... kinda at a crossroad myself. started on a g-series tak, still have it and love it, but it didn't give me the right platform sound so i bought an epiphone masterbilt. much richer and fuller sound. our worship team is only 6 strong (keys, drums, bass, 2 vocals, and me on guitar) so i don't play much lead. i try to lead over rhythm when i can (both functionally and if i'm able; in no means am i a lead guitarist) so i'm trying to keep my sound to be what i call supportive; that is, i chord differently on the platform that I would if were to just play at home and worship on my own. I support our keys and fill in to keep the rhythm and of course i drive some of the songs as needed. I've been wanting a Gretsch, but i'm leary it's going to be too much like lead and lose the richness of the hollow body. because i don't play much lead, i need to stay in my wheelhouse. Do you think a stock Gretsch would be good for this type of setup? I realize that's hard to really answer, but i value your thoughts. thanks!

I have a bunch of pedals, but have FINALLY settled on a Mesa Mark 5:25, with a couple of delays and verbs, it sound grate, at least for me, been chasing tone for years, I'm now done

I love it. No regrets on the purchase. I have too many great guitars (is that even possible). It is a bit noisy in our church, so I have to employ a little bit of noise gate. If it had a trem/bigsby, it would be my one and only. I'm in "rabbit hole" mode with my tone, so I've pledged to find that "ONE" guitar that I can use exclusively for the next 3-4 months while I get situated (moving from Fractal to Kemper). The ELTM is at the top of that list. Wish me luck!

This subject is so controversial and so funny. I've been playing guitar in church for the last 32 years. I've played strats, Les Paul's and currently playing a Sterling by Music Man. Everyone gets caught up in the gear. Most congregassion have no idea what gear your playing and don't care. The Lord sees into everyone's heart and knows the heart of many guitarists if you are truly worshiping and honoring Him then what does it matter what gear you use as your worship will be a sweet fragrance. You know when you are worshiping right as you can feel his spirit in you to the point of being unable to play.
Definitely a controversial subject. To boil it down: serve the Lord and serve the church by serving the song.

You can take a classic vibe tele. Get it set up properly, roll ur back and hold it done. Lots of time comes from fingers as well.

I couldn't find the guitar I wanted that to me best allowed me to do what I consider to be the best idea of worship guitar (minimal pedals, really subtle adjustments that allow for dynamic changes to guitar tone so not to distract from the mood of the room) and I realized that I could either pay hundreds or thousands for a Les Paul with P90's, or I could build it myself, and I realized that I could learn so much about the guitar by building one myself, so I decided to do that. Maybe nothing will come of it. Maybe I'll build guitars for my church and that'll be that. Maybe I end up with something like Veritas guitars. I dunno. I love guitars. I love electronics. I love being able to worship Jesus with all that He's given me, from middling guitar skills and a willingness to build things. But my next guitar will be a turquoise semi-hollow Les Paul with blacked out everything, P90s, and it'll be played in a church somewhere. And maybe that's serial 001 and you'll never see another. Maybe that's the start of the St. Andrew Guitar Company. I kinda hope it's the latter.

I love it, I could come close to most of the tones I want, especially because the coil splitting, and the humbuckers aren’t too beefy, they chime pretty nicely with Vox AC15, almost sounds like a Gretsh with the right adjustments

I would go with a godin lgxt. A very versatile guitar. Not the cheapest, but good quality and you can produce so many different sounds.
One thing I would add to choosing a guitar though, is playability of the guitar. Something that goes out of tune all the time, poor fret job and poor setup can be detrimental. Having said that, I recently learnt a very important lesson in choosing a guitar. We were looking for a guitar for my boy who's getting into worship and will be on stage soon - so a decent sounding, good quality instrument he can play for years. We ended buying a $40 dust covered, rusty strat rip-off from a pawnshop. This guitar is made of quality wood, stays in tune, sustain for days, great neck and fret job, etc. it just needs better pickups at some stage, but even as is, I can get it sounding pretty close to my MIA start (def from a audience perspective).

Playing an American deluxe Tele and I absolutely love it. It is a little tricky to get some of the richer tones but I get close with the middle selected.
But you’re right, it is about our hearts as worshippers. The gear and even our playing ability is important but always secondary.
I have a 2012 fender strat standard. Sounds better than the 1200-1900 guitars but skill and will to learn and a relationship with God is what matters and makes a difference. I use 10 gauge poly web nano elixir strings. It’s clear and bright yet rounded out
I played almost everything, for me a Gibson ES-335 with MHS pickups is absolutely the most versatile, best sounding, and easiest to express what I want of any guitar I've every played.

If you have been blessed with the funds to have a great rig, awesome - remember why you have it. If you haven't been blessed with funds to have an expensive rig, awesome- you'll learn what quality is and develop character, courage, and talent; don't forget why you're playing and who you're playing for in the first place.
I am addicted to gear. I am also addicted to tone. Above that, I'm addicted to using those two things in a worship setting to the best of my ability.
It concerns me that the number of "worship" channels on RUclips and Instagram are increasingly about the gear and, oh woops, by the way it's for this church or this band. That to me is upside down, man.

Sean, that's been my goal from the start: to be a worshiper first, and make the purpose of the channel CLEARLY about Jesus, not the things we use in his church. It's been tough to keep that focus, if I can be honest. The world continually tugs at our hearts. Drives me nuts. I continue to pray this channel keeps Jesus as CENTRAL. If people don't like it, fine. I'm not trying to please them. I'm trying to serve the Lord and his people in the best way possible.
Guitar for HIS Glory you are doing a good job. I appreciate your heart, which is very clear in how you have constructed this channel. Thank you for being willing to take a risk, and share your talent in the corporate body as well as here. Taking time to share your passion is sharing yourself, which, in my opinion, is pretty deep and takes guts.

I'm in my iron label RG EMG 81 and 60 , the 60 on the neck sounds so full of rounded mids , great on the low end too... But the 81 always bites me in the ass ,like going to punk town.. sigh .

I agree guitar does not matter. A squire won’t sound good if you don’t know how to play. Put a squire in the hands of Brad Paisley or Steve Vai and they will sound like themselves. Tone comes from the fingers and how you attack the strings . I have seen people with almost the exact guitar and pedals as some popular worship guitar player but sound nothing like them. We need to be ourselves and play what God has called you to play. Awesome video man! God bless.
Great vid with some good points. I use a hollowbody guitar and think it sounds amazing for anything the worship leader throws at me. It's an ES339 so it's smaller than a 335 so doesnt have THAT hollowbody sound but I love it.

Thank You I have Stracoasters telecasters 335 PRS solitaire by Boulder Creek 12 string Martin Iuse theses for different songs played I use one of My Stracoasters with HSS pickups and tone caped all different except My PRS Less Paul style it's fine the voicing with pickups out of this world.My Grover Base guitar five different amps but best sounding to Me is My Kustom 300 amp and My Peavey Classic 30 amp .it's picking sounds that don't collide together.that sounds pleasing to GODS ears and how the people react.

Sor anyone who loves the strat tone and doesnt like the noise, there are a few options to choose from to quiet those pesky single coils. This is the cheapest way I have found and it is incredible how quiet your Strat can get. Strat Single coils can give some of the best “bell tones” of any guitar in the world. And those tones are beautiful for this type of setting. Check out this DIY on using aluminum or copper tape to quiet your strat!

I agree and disagree with you. I think you're right when you say the best overall option that can cover a variety of tones is a HH guitar. But I've seen many great worship guitarists play a semi hollow or single coils. My current go to guitar for worhip is my telecaster elite with Noiseless pickups. Eliminates the hum and sounds so beautiful clean and with gain. They cut through the mix a bit better than my HH guitar when I'm playing as our sole guitarist. If I'm playing with another guitarist on Sunday I will play HH as our guitarists use single coil (strats).

The part I struggle with the most is that most guitar parts in modern worship music are really NOT about the musical side, and instead are all about the pedal effects. You get whole songs with just 2 two notes of a basic D and a G major chord plucked over and over with reverb, delay, echo, rotary and octave effects all turned on at the same time. I then show up with my bare strat and amp with just a clean and a dirty channel and it's hard to sound anything at all like the original. I mostly play clean and only use a bit of dirt when I need sustained single notes. If I throw in even a small amount of chord substitutions and inversions in a few verses to break the repetitive monotony, team members have pointed out it might be "distracting" because people expect to hear the same as in the records. I feel more and more pressure to just buy a pedal board and spend hours creating dozens of patches to sound like the recordings played on Christian radio. Just venting a bit. I know it's not about satisfying musical tastes and ALL about lifting up Christ.
Sounds like a perception/preference thing. Soundscapes/delay/reverb are musical to some people, including me. They are less harsh and in your face, and create a nice bed for the vocals. Your preference isn’t right or wrong, but suggesting the parts aren’t musical isn’t accurate, in my opinion.
Make no mistake. The audience knows what they are hearing, but in the form of emotion and feeling.
Great tone and playing will make people feel good, and they just don’t know musical language so they cant say why it makes them feel so good.
Musicians just have the knowledge to describe and pinpoint what they are hearing.
When the audience says “it was too loud” it means the band sucked, and their were likely too many bad frequencies in the mix.

I have a problem... My pedalboard and guitar are quiet but in my church for some reason I get a low ground sound... some people tell me is the sealing lights or something in the electricity.
What about construction for that one-guitar band that I mentioned, I’ve seen some Crema/ Grinder in both alder/maple, and all mahogany guitars. What is going to give the best tone? I’m obviously a total noob in p&w guitar.
I have the Music Man JPX and I love it. The piezo pickup is amazing for that AC pistol sound like the 80s hair ballads. But it just doesn't do clean as well as a strat. Wish it had a single coil in the neck. The crunch tones are a little harsh too so that's why I think my $400 Strat makes a better worship guitar than the $2500 JPX6.
Do have my eye on the majesty though in Arctic Dream! Gorgeous.
That JPX is so nice. My bud replaced the pickups and it is now perfectly suited for this genre. Great guitar!

I’m playing an EBMM Cutlass HSS. It has a silent circuit to keep the singles quite and a tone buffer to keep your tone when you roll off the volume. What a great guitar.

What I really need to do it go practice on either the '60 Gretsch Chet Atkins Country Gentleman, Gretsch hollow body Electromatic 5120, or G&L Tribute Legacy
