Saw Lucinda Williams in Portland in 2011. The guitarist -and I've seen most of the greats at this point-absolutely blew me away with his finesse, chops, musicality, artistry, originality. Pretty sure it was Blake Mills. Absolutely stunning.
Hey figured it out in some podcast he did with the fretboard journal. He bought the guitar from his guitar tech and isnt even sure where the guitar came from. Seems to be a prototype of some kind from danelectro or silvertone. It actually has a second pick up way in the back by the bridge and is a baritone!
Blake makes a 100 dollar guitar sound like 1000 bucks Edit: 3 years later I find out that guitar (6 string bass by Dan electro) routinely go for 1000+… so Blake can make a 1000 dollar guitar sound like a million bucks
OK so first of all " heart of mine" bob wrote for you, i hope you understand that bob dylan wrote songs for people like you that make it special, with that said that song turned me into a blake mills fan WOW i hope that i continue to enjoy your music for a long time to come. thank you.
Blake is such an amazing guitar player. Does anyone know what kind of guitar that is? He seems to be using a baritone tuning but that guitar looks way to short to be a baritone?
www.guitarcenter.com/Danelectro/56-Baritone.gc I have one of these and it is a fantastic guitar. Glad they made it out of the prototype stage. Now, if I could only play it like Blake! Wow, that dude is phenomenal.
Baritone scale, baritone strings/tuning, short neck. Basically the bridge goes all the way to the back of the body so the scale of the strings doesnt change but you need to shorten the neck for this to work. Usually baritones have long necks to compensate for this.
Massimo Beckers just different fingerings with embellishments. The main thing is the independent bass line he's also putting on top of it. So brilliant.
I come back and watch this video every six months or so. And it never gets old. You absolutely murdered it. Thanks Blake.
Same dude, same...
Rookie numbers.. I come back weekly
That baritone sounds like heaven
This video never gets old. Thanks, Blake.
I had the extreme pleasure of sitting in audience to this young man AND Lucinda, at Grand Junction, CO, and I left breathless. I was BLOWN away!!!

Believe that's a Danelectro with that great lipstick pickup
blew me away - it sounds more like an acoustic guitar than any electric I've ever heard
nailed it!
I REALLY WANT TO DO ONE OF THESE SESSIONS
Yeah very cool solo arrangement ..
@critterspun he is amazing. check out his album Break Mirrors.
Its either a Dan-eklectro or a Silvertone guitar from
the mid 1960's.
1:00 you're welcome ;-)
He's playing his own bass part
What is the exact name of that FENDER AMP?? :O

10 years late but it’s a 6 string danelectro bass. Pretty much a baritone with a normal sized neck.

what font did you use for the dates?
Futura Condensed Extra Black by Paul Renner. It's the same font as Nike's JUST DO IT campaign, which is fitting :-)
Does anyone know what the tuning is for this?
i heard an interview with blake that its a baritone so im assuming hes using b standard
What kind of chords does he play? I know it's D and Bm in the verses, but he plays them different than the ordinary ones.. anybody an idea??

It's a Deluxe Reverb.

Is it true that this is a BARITONE guitar?>
yep!
No, this model isn't baritone. It's a normal guitar tuned down (low B string)
+Maxime Raguideau-Obadia Its a baritone with a normal neck. Look how for down the body the bridge is.

It's a DANELECTRO 3612 which I want terribly. That being said. Someone buy one for me and I'll repay you with a sandwich
Not quite. A 3612 is a double cut
amazing guitar player...voice not so much.
Nobody's perfect...But its more important trying to be!!!
That's funny considering he's covering Lucinda. She's not exactly a great singer.
