  • Ukraine says the second group of ships with agricultural cargo has left its ports in the Black Sea. The four vessels are carrying nearly 170,000 tons of grain. It's part of the deal between Ukraine and Russia mediated by Turkey and the UN that was signed last month. The four sides set up a joint center in Istanbul to oversee the shipments of food products to the world's vulnerable regions.
Meanwhile, the first ship that left Ukrainian ports last Monday under the grain exports deal has still not arrived in Lebanon. The Ukrainian embassy there says that the Razoni has been delayed. The ship was inspected by the joint center team in Istanbul last week. It was set to arrive in the Lebanese port of Tripoli on Sunday, carrying more than 26,000 tons of grain.

Are you serious? Do you really mean that this grain ship full of "desperately" needed grain is now wandering the ocean searching for a customer who wants to buy grain. This does not quite sound like the urgent need we've been repeatedly told about, and, what have Lebanese "farmers" and the Lebanese market to do with this?

The hypocrisy of the US and their lovely puppet government in Ukraine, is making noise that seems to be intended to make Russia appear to be the cause of all the worlds Inflation issues, when the sanctions the US was promising long before the Russians ever crossed the border, seem to create more inflation than benefits?

It will be pretty low grade grain. Mostly it will be used for animal feed and corn syrup. Both worthy uses as they are parts of the food supply chain. But the grain does have to compete on the open market and it may not be optimum quality.

You need to look at bigger picture. The Africans still visited Putin to request the grains to be released! So why then? When grain reaches any destination, even non-African, then it means more grain will be left over for Africa from other sources who until now sold to the other destinations. It is all connected. The global demand will go down and the poorest anywhere will therefore finally also get their chance. Is that difficult to understand?

Do you want to dictate production and pricing in a command economy like Stalin did, which resulted in the starving to death of millions of Russians and Ukrainians? A "fair price" is whatever their customers are prepared to pay for their produce. That is how trade works. Meanwhile Ukrainian farmers are having their silos bombed, crops burned and are getting killed trying to do their job. It's amazing we can ship anything out of there.

People keep saying "grain" when they mean corn, flaxseed or any number of other products that are soft commodities but are not "grain". This first ship sailed with corn of which there is no shortage, and the sale price on the bushels of corn loaded in the hull will not cover the cost of this trip. The trip may have been planned and loaded a month ago which is as soft prices were falling from the spike. Corn was the first to fall. Wheat, and soy shortly after. A little bounce last week, but corn is only marginally above the prewar price. This all looks like a side show looking to put a good face on a disaster. Thanks to your Beirut chief for the report.
